All the old farmers here in the Italian alps use scythes to gather hay for their animals. Gets a longer cut of grass for the flocks and herds and you can cut these steep hillsides. Yes, you can hit things like rocks, roots and saplings but that’s why everyone around here has their own little scythe anvil (I am sure there is some special name for it) that they use to straighten out the large dents or nicks in the blade before sharpening with the stone. It is actually the best tool for these steep hillsides as you can harvest places on your own two feet that you could never safely cut with machines. One guy in our village is still using his great-grandfather’s scythe every day to cut hay or fresh grass for his horses. He says that the blade is just a lot thinner than when he first started cutting with it 40 years ago. How many gas powered lawnmowers are still working for a fourth generation?

This is wonderful to know. In the future, I will need to aerate and overseed my Fescue lawn, which is a tough gass. I can use a wedge to change the lay of the blade to get a close cut beforehand. The lay of my blade gives me a consistent 7.5 cm, or so which seems to suit the Fescue well. Not sure of the exact Fescue species it is, but grows in bunches and each bunch grows in diameter slowly. I do not think it produces rhizomes, so seeding will eventually be needed if any area die off.
Sorry for the ramble, but I went from not really caring about my lawn to being an enthusiast because of moving to a home with a front lawn that is publically visible and mostly from from switching to mowing exclusively with a scythe.
Your channel has been instrumental in helping me understand the proper mechanics. The lawn looks consistently even, I am markedly faster than when I started and I am not nearly as tired at the end. Thank you.

Or technically in my area ppl a bit more affluent than myself have ppl come do their yards tbh but I’m trying to not think about how we aren’t as lucky lol.
