    very useful video and encouraging ! I live in the NW of Scotland next to the sea.After the building and ground work was finished we planted a scottish coastal meadow mix and started sything. This worked well for the first three years, but this year we were overrun with knapweed Centaurea nigra. This prevented the other smaller plants growing. I will get the blade hoe out this winter and try to bring balance back to the meadow.

    • @slattergubben6702
      @slattergubben6702 11 дней назад

      @@AlexAllin1 great initiative! Those spieces can sometimes be problematic if you have added layer sandy nonfertile soil above a more firtile. As they have deeper roots than many other meadow plants. Else I regard it as a native and pretty good plant for insects, but I am not fully aware how it is in your district. Also keep in mind a sown natural meadow has it's succession over many years until it reaches some kind of balance. With a blade hoe you can of course keep them down as you easy spot them , probably best to do it one time in autumn and one time in beginning of June when the stems start to raise.

    I've just practiced these movements for the first time, and then tried it on our field of grass that's maybe a meter tall. We've let that grow because we think it's good for all kinds of insects and other animals to do so, but our ridable mower has a hard time getting through it, one of the reasons that I want to start using a scythe, but, man! it's tough. I've really got to gain some muscles (I'm a woman) and get the hang of it. I might even have to start practicing on shorter grass, cause it can barely get through the stuff! I've also clumsily rammed the pointed end into the soil two times, apperantly I haven't quite got the movement down, and the field is also on a slope... I also don't know if the scythe I got is right for my body, I feel like I have to bend my knees a lot to get close to the ground with it. I have one where I can move the lower handle (I don't know the technical term) up or down but I don't know how to know where I should put it so for now I've left it where it is. Anyway, I've barely done 1 meter with it, and it doesn't look good, can't get close to the ground, my scythe kept getting stuck even though I did a very thin strip at a time, it just glides over the grass and cuts just a few pieces. My arm hurts now, so I stopped.
