      Jolie Gabor lived to be, I think, 100! She famously hired opera diva Maria Callas' estranged mother to work in her Madison Avenue costume jewelry boutique, and got TONS of publicity. She also had an outlet on Palm Canyon in Palm Springs. As a child I remember seeing Jolie, Zsa Zsa, Eva and non-pro sis Magda, at different times, usually at Melvyn's restaurant. They were colorful, memorable and larger than life. They don't make em like that, any more!

      Apparently, he hated the sound of his own voice and wasn’t at all confident or willing to pursue a singing career further, as when he first heard his voice on a record singing soft jazz, he said that his voice sounded terrible (to him at least) and later in life he viewed it as a second rate art. I don’t think he viewed himself as a crooner, at all.
      Kinda breaks my heart that he didn’t like the sound of his own voice and thought of himself as a terrible singer and was reluctant to share his talents with the world.
      I read that Ella Fitzgerald also was not that confident in her abilities.

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 6 лет назад +8

      However, it should be said that even though Mama owned a jewelry store, the Gabor sisters got their jewels from their husbands. As Zsa Zsa said, "I never hated a man enough to give him diamonds back."
      She was of two minds on the identity of a girl's best friend. On the one hand, she said "Diamonds are a girl's best friend and dogs are a man's best friend. Now you know which sex has more sense." On the other hand, she said "I have learned that not diamonds but divorce lawyers are a girl's best friend."
      To be fair to Zsa Zsa, she had other interests besides jewels. For example she was quite interested in housekeeping. She once claimed, "I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house."

    Interesting that Anthony Perkins is a left hander yet played the right handed Jimmy Piersall in "Fear Strikes Out". He threw the baseball right handed (although not that well) in this movie. It's an oddity, but some people do write left handed yet throw right handed. Brooks Robinson is one of the most notable examples. However, Perkins was a total left hander and worked hard to learn to throw a baseball with his right hand for this movie.

      I myself is lefty, do all the strong works left handed, throw ball with left hand but I write with right hand. So I think it's quite natural practice among others too, even actors.
      However actors have to change theirs appareances, hair colours and styles and even their habits for the sake of the characters they are playing. So I think that's quite natural too.

    Tony was discreetly involved with actor Tab Hunter just before this period of time. Paramount insisted that Perkins break it off. The relationship was also quite strained due to a movie rights betrayal. Tab received critical applause for his portrayal of baseball great Jim Piersall in the 1955 TV version of "Fear Strikes Out" and wanted his studio, Warner Bros., to buy the film rights for him. Tony knew this but secretly had Paramount buy the rights for him instead. The 1957 film version starring Perkins was also critically acclaimed.

      On some of the other panel shots in 50s and 60s they smoked all the time. And handed out cigarettes as prizes. wml was very clean in comparison.

    As good as Robert Preston was in the previous weeks episode, Lloyd Nolan is totally the opposite in this one.

    Sorry, but my impression of Jolie is that she's even "blonder" than her famous daughters. She keeps nodding her head instead of saying "yes" as if the blindfolded panelists could see her, and seems surprised when there's no reaction.

    In the end no answer as to which panelist particularly knew Jolie Gabor well enough to visit her at home and vice versa.... any info/insights? I assumed it was one of the women, and I was guessing Dorothy just because it seemed maybe a little harder to believe not knowing neighbors Arlene and Bennett more equally well, but in the end there was really no indication who it was, so now I'm curious!

    Jolie Gabor's elaborate dress made a swishing sound as she came onstage. That prompted the question 'Are you in costume?' which got a 'no'. In fact the shiny fabric and the long scarf or stole or maybe even a cape amount to a costume because nobody in daily life would wear such a thing. Normally we can't judge the fashion because the episodes are in black and white but in this case the word 'overdone' feels right.

    • @neilmidkiff
      @neilmidkiff 4 года назад +5

      You say "nobody in daily life" as if you never heard of evening wear. Yes, Mrs. Gabor was elaborately dressed, as if for an occasion when her escort would be wearing white tie and a tailcoat, and at the time there would have been any number of New York restaurants and night clubs where that level of formality was expected. Compared to our modern informality, it may seem like a costume, but to her, at the time, I can see why she didn't think of what she was wearing as a costume. She hadn't dressed that way with the idea of going to a "costume party" after all.

    It's odd to think that the U.S. prison system would actually have a salaried position for Entertainment Director, even back in the 1950s! Nowadays, I would imagine any entertainment is overseen by the warden's staff or appropriate prison board.
