    I met Bill when he was working out of his garage. I brought him my Tama Superstars for refinishing in Candy Apple Red and some bearing edge tweeks. Amazing job.
    I believe his first gig was a painter at Drum Workshop.
    I later bought a Pork Pie kit that smoked my Tama’s.
    Their thrones are the best.
    I once sent him a message how much I loved his work.
    Got a bunch of swag in the mail a few weeks later. Much Respect.

    I love PP drums. I had a cheap Asian Luan kit re-edged by Bill Detamore back in 2013 and it made it sound insanely good. But really, Nick is such a great drummer in these Sweetwater vids. Sweetwater should have him do longer vids of him just performing on these kits.

  • @tvs813

    You can make pretty much any kit sound good with proper tuning, heads and recording gear.. it's the drummer that makes the difference. Yes this is a boring, depressing comment but it's true.

    • @Quartiano

      Definitely agree, but a kit should reflect the player too, different sizes/tunings can help manipulate a kit to have “your” sound. Like over the years I have purchased, traded, and sold items to help me create my perfect kit. Still always wanting to try new things but I do have “a sound”

    Kick drums at 14X22 or 14x22 allow for much better beater bounce or control, in my opinion. Sweet kit. Nick killing it as usual.

  • @slimbeaux
    @slimbeaux 6 лет назад +2

    As always great review. The drums sound great. The only complaint that I had was I thought the drums should have been at a higher level in the mix. Felt I had to listen too hard to hear them. Love the sound of the snare, thought the kick drum sounded a little dead. But definitely would have been great in a small room or church.

    Let's not forget where the shallower depth on your Kik drums the beater comes back quicker so you're able to do double strokes with ease as compared to a deeper kick drum.

  • @paulv8453
    @paulv8453 4 года назад +1

    I have to be honest. I’ve been watching Nick demo a lot of kits lately & I’ve been on the fence between a Tama Starclassic, Mapex Saturn V or a Mapex Armory kit but these drums, I don’t know if it’s the way they’re mic’ed up or the heads he’s using, sound better. I prefer the sound interval from 13” to 16” more than 12” to 16”. This kit has those classic sizes. I just wish that they offered it in more than one color.

      Hey, Rowan. Thanks so much for your interest. Recommending heads is tricky without knowing what style of music you play. My personal favorite is very traditional - Coated Remo Ambassador on top and a Hazy Remo Ambassador on the bottom.

    I used to have a custom made pork pie maple kit I bought at guitar center and was cool but then I bought a tama starclassic bb and my god I could tell a huge difference in tone, volume, build quality, hardware on the kit and the innovations, much better mounting system and mounting systems, floor tom legs and bass drum Spurs but most importanly the sound and feel was just absolutely mind blowing compared to the pork pie. Most important piece of info is that my pork pie kit was a 3 piece whichran me 2,000 bucks. The tama kit is a 5 piece and got the exact same sizes and finish I wanted for 1900 shipped straight from the tama warehouse. It’s just not even a competition. I also bought a 5!piece tama silverstar as a gigging kit for 500 bucks which destroys my old pork pie kit as well. And they the tama superstars which are also a mid range cheap price with amazing sound and quality. But Starclassics are just the best drums in the world for me. I just don’t get why anyone would pay for a custom kit from a smaller company when you can get 10 times better quality from a bigger drum brand like tama or other big brands. But that’s just my opinion. Some people just love the boutique style custom drums from small companies but I’ll take the much better build quality and cheaper price from a tama anyday. Also much easier to get replacement parts for any part of the kit or add ons from bigger brands. That’s my opinion but don’t get me wrong pork pie is a good custom company, better than all those other custom small companies.

      or walmart vs. smaller companies.

    • @andyham6094
      @andyham6094 6 лет назад +3

      Totigerus sadly yes I am but as a consumer I’m not worried about being patriotic and sticking with a small USA or even bigger USA companies. I go with what’s the best deal and best gear in general where I get every pennies worth and what sounds feels and looks the best. Everyone is different and some people just love smaller companies or American companies which is cool, it would suck if the whole world played the same kit and same company. But for me tama just kills everyone with their prices on most of their kits outside the star range.

    • @andyham6094
      @andyham6094 6 лет назад +2

      kodiak wild I guess it would be Walmart vs smaller companies if it was a Walmart with Walmart prices with Whole Foods quality. ( I know Walmart sells more than food but you get my point ) lolll.

    • @MeTuLHeD
      @MeTuLHeD 6 лет назад +2

      That's interesting. I have owned numerous Tama snares and one Tama kit over my lifetime of drumming. And I now own two Pork Pie snare drums. And I wouldn't trade those two snares for all of the Tama snares I've ever heard...much less the ones that I've owned. Different strokes.

      So far so good. I had to go through and tighten up all the lug screws because they were assembled pretty loose and lube the tension rods (which really is minimal and should be done/ checked either way). I got it in blue sparkle with a 13×7 snare, 12, 16 toms and 20x18 kick. Head replacement is a must (comes with the crappy Remo UT's) which was not a big deal thanks to the closeout price. Tunes up easy and holds it well so far. I'm happy with it.
