Ludwig vs Pork Pie - Both drums with Die-cast and Triple Flange Hoops

  • I did a little strange experiment, where I not only did a shootout of two drums, but I also switched their hoops! Both drums with die-cast, and then both drums with triple flange hoops. Plus, I did two different tunings.

    That is the first time I've ever seen anybody do a comparison of triple flange and die cast hoops on the same drum. Excellent demonstration thank you for doing this!

    You have hands-down, the best damn recording tutorial videos on YT. I've been watching your channel for many years now, such an inspiration. Your dedication to educating your audience is what inspires me to do better on my own content. Great video as always. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers

    Thanks for another excellent video. A lot of drummers underestimate how much impact your choice of hoops has on the sound. Shows clearly in your video!

    The Pork Pie with the die cast hoops is the sound that I dream about but haven't heard in reality. Thanks for this video. I now know exactly what I need to look for. Never knew the die cast hoops sounded so drastically different than the triple flanged.

    Watched out of interest as I own the Pork Pie, and it's one of my two go-to snares (along with my 70s Premier 2000 14x5.5). The 'ideal' set up you went for (high tuning, die-cast hoops, and an Evans Genera Dry) is exactly how I keep it! Thanks for confirming I have the drum set up to it's very best!

      what brand die cast hoops did you buy ? does it matter ? Ludwig vs DW, etc? I have PP BoB

  • @christiancanalita6487
    @christiancanalita6487 5 лет назад

    Thanks for doing this! I like the Pork Pie too except there was some harmonic on the lower tuning with the flange hoop that I didn't like. The PP sounded better with the die cast hoop on the lower tuning.

    They sound similar enough that playing style and mic choice and position will make all the difference.

  • @md4man

    Some ring to a snare is most often needed in a mix for it to sound lively enough. I'd rather have some excess ring that I can EQ out than not have ring & need some for the mix. So, for the most part I preferred the Ludwig. I did like the high-tuned Pork Pie with triple flanged hoops better than the Ludwig with flanged hoops. Great video.

    An excellent video that demonstrates clearly the subtle differences. The one noticeable difference I can hear is the die-cast hoops almost absorb some high-end overtones which one may want to remove without deadening the sound too much with dampening. Probably very useful in recording applications.

    Question: with the BoB snare did you have any issues with the tension rods being too hard/tight to tune out of the box? I just bought one and most of the snare and batter side tension rods were way too tight when finger tightening and when trying to tune!!

  • @Eurodrummer666

    Impressive comparison! I always believed the superphonic was always superior to most of metal snares... Brass shell seems to be a very nice option.

  • @farpastdark408
    @farpastdark408 2 года назад

    Great video comparison, I cranked up my ADAM Speakers and at the low tuning the two drums regardless of hoops sound completely interchangeable, but I think I liked the BOB Better than the Ludwig with the Die cast rims. At the high tuning with the triple flange the tuning change made it difficult as the BOB was tuned higher and sounds a bit choked out. I would go with the Pearl big brass Snare (BOB), wish I had one. Check out ; if you can find one, the TAMA JT147 or John Tempesta snare...WOW, wish I could afford one.

  • @footnotedrummer

    Both are nearly indistinguishable tuned low with the die-cast. The Ludwig overall, seemed to have more over ring. However... I think I like the over ring when tuned high with the triple flanged hoops.

    I tried a Pork Rub, same brass shell, with some aluminum die cast hoops and it sounded great! The aluminum is much lighter then the normal zinc but the casting made them rigid. Great trade-off!

    I am obviously bias, as I own the Pork Pie BoB and use die cast with a high tuning, but man you really nailed it. I try to use some form of dampener because I still do get a little ring out of it when it's tuned tight, so throwing a moon gel pad on there makes this, to me, one of the best sounding bang for your buck snares

    That same Pork Pie saved me in the studio the last time I recorded drums. I didn't have a very good snare with me as it was a rushed session and the owner of the studio had one. It totally saved the day!!! ...>>>
    I liked the Die Cast in the Low Tunings and the Triple Flanged for the High Tunings! I feel like the Die Cast controlled and focused the tone better in the low tunings, and the Triple Flange almost seemed to open the drum up abit in the higher tunings and gave it abit of a thicker punchy splat (whatever you wanna call it lol, I just know I liked it lol) sound whereas the Die cast seemed abit tighter and snappier.

    • @creativesoundlab
      @creativesoundlab  4 года назад +2

      Yeah I like the die cast a lot. I thought the Pork Pie was terrible until I took it back to my own studio and did this video. Much respect for it now.

    • @underpressureman

      @@creativesoundlab Ya totally! I also never really thought about hoops until seeing this video! I've always just accepted what comes on a drum or what's laying around. I crazy to think how a hoop(along with tuning of course) can basically make or break a good snare sound. Maybe not make or break it , but make it that much better for the particular drum/tuning!!! Pays to do these experiments!!!

  • @DZNTZ

    Pork Pie ftw. I definitely thought it edged out the Supra. At low tuning the BOB sounded cleaner, at high tuning it had a beautiful pop to it that the Supra didn’t. The Pork Pie brass snares are a great value, and after hearing a side by side like this how could you pay over 2x the price for a seamless shell? The sound doesn’t lie, seams don’t matter. I’d even argue that the seam is probably the factor that’s drying it out that little bit more and cutting down on dissonant overtones. Whatever it is, it sounds gorgeous!
    Cool video idea and excellent execution, thank you sir 🙏

    From a songsound perspective: I prefer the Ludwig.... Why? Because there is much more details in the ghostnotes and more articulation.... It,s about the total: against a wall of guitars, or even other instruments, the Ludwig will keep up in its frequency-range...So: a more natural sound... The pork pie will loose details obviously then...
