  • This is the first video on how to make a bonsaipot in stoneware clay. I make an oval-shaped Bonsai pot, free hand built.
The video shows only the first process of making a pot, not the bisque fire or the glazing, thats in the next video.
    Hi, I'm Mika.
I live in Finland and just love to work in clay.
The Finnish winters can be really cold so I have been experimenting with native trees for Bonsai and made my own pots now for some years.
I always keep my Bonsais outside.
In the winter I dig the pot and all levelled with the ground. This way the tree and pot will survive.
I hope you enjoy my video and that you return for more videos!
    Cheers!
    Mika

Awesome video, Thanks for sharing! What kind of clay do you use? How thick are your walls?

      Hey, Thank you!
The clay for this pot is a stoneware clay with a fair amount of grog. It’s called 11Py-g. The walls are righ about 1 cm thick, could be even thinner.. Cheers! Mika

….. how thick are your slabs?

Hi! My slabs are about 1.2cm thick. They shrink a little bit in the fire, so I end up with about 1 cm.
The climate her in Finland is tricky for outdoor Bonsai. I could make the walls thinner, but the changes in temperature, freezing cold winters etc, are a problem. I think you could easily make a pot like this with slabs from 7 mm all the way up to about 3 cm thick.
Right now -13 here and my pots are out in the garden covered with ice and ❄️. Cheers!

      Hello there!
I order my clay from a shop here in Finland that specializes on ceramics.
The clay is originally from England. I hope I could be helpful.
      Cheers! Mika in Finland
