Totally incredible song by a totally incredible singer/songwriter. . Everyone talks about Joni Mitchell being one of the greatest female songwriters or for that matter, of all songwriters, but I think Jackie is in that same class of songwriters as Joni Mitchell. Yet, you don't always hear Jackie being in that league - and I think she deserves more credit for her incredible ability to write, sing and compose so many great songs.
Back in the 60s I lived in Liverpool I bought this record amongst others that included "Do you love me by the Contours" from a sailor who was sailing on the Liverpool New York run. The song has had many meanings for me over the years, butt most of all my first real love. I still have that single 45 and play it now and again to drift back some fifty years to Liverpool at the time a city of music.
Hard to believe that Jackie’s version only hit #99 in the top 100. The wonderful Searchers version, only hit #35. This was in the states, as the song fared much better overseas. This is one of my favorites from the 60’s, and has only gotten better with age.
Very pleasant. Live versions, many years later, of old 1960's studio recordings are often the better versions like this one. One of my favorite songs to play and sing on my guitar.
Such a great song, such a talented lady. I liked The Searchers version of this back in 64 and then never heard it again after it was off the charts until 1986 or so. Detroit radio station KISS FM was one of the first FM 'oldies' stations and they started playing it, and I got to appreciate it all over again. Back then I didn't know it was written by Jackie and had never heard her version. It wasn't until RUclips came along that I found out she had written it and performed it originally. I love watching the old Hollywood-A-Go-Go clip where she's miming it.
Sixty years before Taylor Swift, several years before Joni, there was Sharon Lee Myers, (Jackie DeShannon). This song inspired The Beatles. John Lennon "borrowed" the guitar licks and style in several songs. Jimmy Page was her boyfriend for a time. The Led Zeppelin song Tangerine is about her. She also wrote many other fine tunes.
So proud of this Kentucky girl! A 1960s video shows her tearing it up, maybe a Phil Spector production? She's working a tight skirt, great knee action, much personality in the performance not seen in a white girl until Nancy Sinatra. Tina Turner was kickin'it with "A Fool in Love." Jackie also cowrote Bette Davis Eyes.
Yes, the simplicity makes it better. I wonder why it was not done by an act like the Everly Brothers with a basic rhythm guitar arrangement. Alas, another song almost ruined by Phil Spector.
@@languageoffootball Seen the searchers many times, the most recent in Torquay in April and had a chat with Frank Allen who stayed in the same hotel as me, my favorite song of all time especially the Searchers version and they always finish with this song and i always leave the show with a great feeling. Sorry Jackie there is a much better version of you singing this here on YT, and yeah I know its mimed but still much better than this.
And in my opinion, he still is the best. If Jackie can accompany him for this song, my life would be complete. Even if she covers Jackie Rawes, I'll die happy.
Oh My God, Jackie. Thank you for this song.
Music doesn't get better. What a song.
One of the best 60,s songs ever written!
If not the BEST
She wrote it, the searchers made it, great song!!

She's a lot better than Mitchell. Different genre's. So glad to be in her generation. The music was fabulous just like Jackie.
What a woman!..she wrote some GREAT songs...and sang other Great songs
She still kills it!!
One of the best, most beautiful love songs ever. Congrats, and Viva Jackie!

A perfect pop song and her version is the best. I saw Karla Bonoff do it in 1979.
What a beauty what a performer what a writer i can see why so many became infatuatied with her.. 😊

This song sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.
What a wonderful and talented Lady! God given talent. We are very fortunate to have her our lives. Thank you Jackie!
Jackie's still got it !
Thank You Jackie for the pure joy you bring
Jackie still sounds great here today
She is still mesmerizing,
She wrote another classic for the Searchers called Each Time.
Fabulous song, every word means something, many memories are in this song
She still rocks, great voice & a beautiful lady
Always loved this song back in the day!!
Amazing Jackie was born in 1942 so she is 70 here. Jackie was on the first Beatles tour in 64.
She opened for the Beatles in Chicago August of 1964. I was 15. She was wow.
Beautiful rendition Jackie
A great, underappreciated artist and a lovely girl. I guess Jimmy was on to something.
I'd say Jimmy was a very very fortunate man.
I appreciate her!
Love this lady , She really is a LEGEND
Always wondered about her loved her songs and will sing in the sunshine and laugh every day
Still has it after all these years
As beautiful as ever.
Fantastic voice, legend🏆
Wooh! That voice!

Top notch. Go girl.
Sehr schön gesungen, ich bin begeistert. 💕🎼

Kentucky? I had no idea.
Standing O for Jackie.
I love this version of her classic.

@@ARIZJOE Have you ever listened to Karla Bonoff's cover of the tune? I give a big thumbs up.
@@ARIZJOE Come on.......Phil Spector never ruined any songs,he enhanced and made them.
@@rogerhartley1786 Paul McCartney and George Martin would disagree with you.
@@ARIZJOEme too
Long live Hazel, Kentucky .. they make 'em durable .. Hazel, that's where ..
Great recording!
Awesome !
Interessante versione ballad che rende il brano malinconico e fa scendere i lucciconi perché ti porta indietro alla gioventù andata
one of her greatest .....
Just class♡♡♡☆☆☆
She wrote this song and also Bette Davis Eyes covered by Kim Carnes.
Love that Takamine 12!
Just half a step below the original recording, nice.
TEMAZO!!!...
queen
It's no 1 with me.😂
Brava!
Pam Tillis version of this song was dope as well
❤❤❤
What a beautiful and desirable lady🥰!!!
One of my schoolboy crushes when I was 14.
The real deal.
i heard by the first time with the status quo band--but love her interpretation too --ho teahhh
Her interpretation -- is the original , she wrote it , many have done good copies but none quite like Jackie D .
Del shannon did a great cover of this song too. Love both though.
But the Searchers version is commercially and artistically great!
@@user-mx1ot9dv9n meh!
She wrote it🙄
Is Jackie little? or is her guitar massive? What a great song writer?
Wheres my wink jackie 😊 if you know you know ❤
Paul Carrack also does a great and triumphant version of this song.
Of the covers, The Searchers version is by far the best.

Where have you been all of these years ?
Listen to The Searchers version.
Is that Jackie? Different face!
Just a pity they didn't bring in Mike Pender to do a duet with her.
The searchers version is ny favourite
where is jackie deshannon these days
She regularly appears as a correspondent on the syndicated radio program, “Breakfast with the Beatles”.
Then she co-wrote Bette Davis Eyes. Did ok.
In D major
Jools should get her back...a neglected writer
Trouble is, she blows every other act away.
Sorry, this is a tepid version compared with the magical original version. The original is MUCH better
50 years later.
She may have written it, but I've heard so many better cover versions sung over the years
