This should have been a UK hit I like the orchestration on it. Its almost Motown but not quite.

Jackie DeShannon was born in Hazel, Kentucky on August 21, 1941. She is an American singer-songwriter with a string of hit song credits from the 1960s onwards, as both singer and composer. She was one of the first female singer-songwriters of the rock 'n' roll period. She is best known as the singer of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" and "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" and, as the composer of "When You Walk in the Room" and "Bette Davis Eyes," which were hits for The Searchers and Kim Carnes, respectively. I can still remember performing this song on many occasions with of my rock groups in the mid 60s - with a female lead singer who's dresses were even shorter than Jackie's. It always brought the house down!

Released a week after my 6th birthday. I have witnessed the greatest expansion of music styles, genres, talent and technology our planet has seen--so far. Grateful, blessed, privileged to have music in my life. My job as a little girl was to turn off my 3 teenage sister's radios after they left for school in the morning. Eldest sister was born in 1944, so I witnessed rock and roll in its infancy. I finally had to ask what a dukaverl was. Duke of Earl. I was 4. Couldn't give a fig for 99.9% of pop music. Rock n roll baby to rock n roll antique. Old rockers never die. They just roll away.

Yeah and I never gave much thought to what "Going to the "Jackal" of Love" meant either, it just sounded great. Took quite a few years until it kind of sorted itself out though I still secretly sing it my way..bad boy I am. Another was "Mr. "Spaceman" you're on all the songs with that Ba ba ba ba....". When I was about twelve, she was appearing on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, multiple shows a day. I went to see her about 6 times over 3 days, and I paid the extra 25 cents to sit in the front rows. The audiences were maybe 50 people at each show.

I had forgotten how beautiful her voice was and recently rediscovered it. Oh, this brings back so many memories! I love her Kentucky accent, being from Kentucky myself. I have played this one and and "When You Walk In The Room" over and over, and played "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" a few times, as well. I just don't get tired of hearing her sing those three songs!

She actually started writing this song as a young girl when she still lived in Hazel, KY, less than a half mile from where my mom grew up. She was also a love of Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin. Small world, eh?
Yes i love her southern accent as well. It adds so much to the song, as well as others eg what the world needs now. Tbh though i thought this was written by nitsche and bono. Jackie's version of this song was released April 1963 but this performance must have been in 1964 or later. Long hair didn't appear until after The Beatles came to America in 1964. It would have taken some time for Americans to have grown their hair, lol.

This is SUCH a great version of this song -- much better than the wimpy one by the Searchers!
Jackie claims full participation in the writing of the song along with Sunny Bono and Jack (wiki). One of my all time favorite songs. But I personally like the music by the searchers better.
