Muscle Cramping and Fatigue on Carnivore? Try This!

  • In month 15 of the carnivore diet, I started to experience charlie horses in the middle of the night. I would wake up from sleep, and have to stand up out of bed to get this cramp out of my left leg. In addition to the muscle cramping, I was experiencing extreme fatigue. And this was more than just me being tired from working full-time and also being a twin mom to my wonderful 2 1/2-year-old toddlers. This was a deep level of exhaustion. Sleep did not help, taking a multivitamin did not help, and I could not figure out what was going on. In today's video, I talk about how I figured it out and what ended up helping.

I started carnivore in early January and was doing really well for about 3 months then started feeling very tired and getting excruciating leg and/or thigh cramps at night. I had been taking LMNT electrolytes every day and occasional magnesium. Unfortunately I still got occasional bad cramps at night. I fell off the carnivore wagon a few weeks ago when I had friends to stay for the weekend and have struggled to get back on it. I must admit the leg cramp issue was also a factor. Your video is so timely as I decided if I’m to restart carnivore I need to make sure both my magnesium and potassium levels are good and ordered some new supplements a few days ago. I hadn’t realised that Vit D3 can also affect/deplete - I have been taking 4000iu (plus a K2 MK7 supplement) most days - so thanks for flagging this. I felt so much better on carnivore initially so, armed with my new supplements, I’m going to restart asap.

Eat a healthy well formulated diet low in red meat and animal products high in natural foods like healthy vegetables, small portions of nuts, seeds and some portions of fruits. Small portions of food is the real answer to achieving your goals. Walk every day with a goal of 8,000 to 10,000 steps. I allow myself some plain yogurt with a mixture of fruit for dessert before I stop eating for the day usually around 6-7:00 PM. The key takeaway is to eat small portions. It is working great for me and I don't feel deprived. No leg or muscle cramps eating this way. Good luck!

Smoothed down to 20g keto but never fully converted to fat burning, or couldn't eat enough fat. In 4 weeks I thought I had MS, heart failure, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer and statin myopathy all in one. Ate 2 potatoes and some popcorn -150g - and was reborn overnight. 70 years old, and probably slow to adapt, but won't go below 200g again. This pear tastes so good right now.

Nice! Yea, I think the D supplementation is the key, within the context of a carnivore diet. You're not getting as much magnesium from your diet when you are strict carnivore, which is fine if youre not supplementing with really high levels of D. I dont think you would have the same effect if you got the D from the sun.

@JennyMitich As to why Inuit don't take D supplements. Inuit eat a lot of cold water fish which is high in D. Another commenter mentioned sardines... a good choice for D. Also our food sourcing often does not contain all the nutrients available in paleo times and we do not eat nose to tail(especially liver). A varied animal diet is a good idea. MANY factors can affect cramping and I would advise starting with more water and then perhaps try one additional supplement gradually at a time. Too much of one supplement can throw off balance in multiple others. Stress is a non dietary factor in many imbalances that is quite pervasive for us, so mind/body needs balance too. Supplements can be advantageous in the case of diseases/conditions developed over the years that need targeting. Like thyroid, where iodine can help accelerate healing and is lacking in food sources due to soil depletion which affects both plant and animal agriculture. Thyroid issues are often an issue with fatigue and iodine(often deleted in our food sources) can help the thyroid... but as is often the case with supplementing only one vitamin, it will need increases in selenium and salt as well. One commenter mentioned almonds which provide a LOT of selenium(which can easily become too much), helpful if supplementing with iodine. Low selenium can also have cramps and fatigue as symptoms. BUT be aware almonds also contain very high levels of oxalate... not a good idea. If you are not low in a particular vitamin/nutrient then supplementing one, just as insurance, can lead to a cascade of imbalances. Small, cautious steps. on balance, in my opinion, carnivore is a far simpler and more health advantageous way of eating than any other.

Over 60k shuts down kidneys? I know people who take 100k iu/day to battle a type of candida (fungal infection transmitted by the bloodstream) and they're fine. I think you can waste VitD by taking too much, as it just gets peed out and not used, but I don't believe you can truly OD on it.

I'm pretty strict about what constitutes a Carniovore.
I wasn't a Carniovore until I finally stopped drinking coffee.
Coffee is a plant and caffeine is a neurotoxin.
I have been drinking 8-10 cups of coffee a day for about 30 years.
It took a year to get rid of coffee, only then
the uric acid crystals were gone from my body.
Since then, I haven't needed an electrolyte supplement.
Coffee is also a problem in Carniovore due to strong physical and social dependence.
Coffee consumes our body and forms uric acid crystals, it has no positive health effects.

I follow Stephanieketo and she talks alot about the carnivore diet she's mainly keto but she says carnivore can be dangerous, People always use the Redmond salt on their meat a lot or salt in general and use too much sodium and that creates an imbalance of potassium and then on that same side of the coin when you create an imbalance of potassium you also create an imbalance of magnesium, From what I understand potassium is a more important especially on the carnivore diet, it's more important than sodium, The key is to basically get the electrolytes in balance potassium #1 then magnesium then sodium

Almost 10 months carnivore here, at about the 6 month point for me i was getting foot and leg cramps when
i went to bed, spent couple weeks trying to figure it out. Learned that i was using to much salt for
both my meals, so i cut out the salt for one meal, and increased my water and the cramps
went away, haven't had them since!
Only thing im dealing with now and this actually just started 2 weeks ago when it started
getting warm/hot outside, btw i also live in Chicago but southwest suburbs ;) i been lethargic,
my hydration has been the same.
I work a night shift (8pm-4am) so i eat when i get home in the morning, and then eat a little before
i go to work, this lethargy i know was low and no salt for my 2nd meal, and im discovering im not eating
enough, nor getting enough fat. Never did carnivore in the summer so its a new thing for me,
whats interesting is im only lethargic when im at work, and i still have my physical strength but
when im moving around as its manual labor (work in a warehouse) i just have no energy regardless
of my electrolytes and water intake.
So something im trying to sort out, i also think my vit D is low as well, i do take vitD with K2, lastly
i think what i need to start doing is go back outside and start running again in the forest
preserve trail to get some sun.

I take the magnesium Glycinates every night and we also have a roll on that i can roll on my lower back and my calves for extra help. I find that magnesium also helps decrease any anxiety feelings. If I do feel a charlie horse starting, i quickly get up and just stand on that leg, with the other one raised, so that all of my weight goes to that troubled leg, and it clears up quite quickly. It took my a while to learn that trick too.

I find it strange that this diet is sooooo good for you, yet you have to supplement with all these vitamins and minerals. Obviously something is lacking in the diet. I honestly think the diet may be for some that have health issues but I do not think it is overall healthy. The "carnivore experts" can tell you to get rid of fruits and veggies but the amount of water in plants is ridiculous and is probably why people that eat veggies in a balanced diet don't experience the kind of side effects I have been finding on the carnivore diet. I have experienced fatigue, loss of sleep and major dehydration from being on the carnivore diet. I will start introducing fruits back into my diet for hydration. It amazes me how people don't really know anything, even doctors, when it comes to diet. Everything finds balance. From my experience on carnivore and from research, dehydration is a major side effect of the carnivore diet. I have never had to be aware of my electrolytes before carnivore and I work outside in the hot sun! I would just drink plenty of water and I was fine. Now on carnivore, I dehydrate in hours and then it takes half a day to rehydrate. Terrible.

I failed on Keto and Carnivore and Plant Based. Now I eat everything but I make sure to control my portions. For instance I wake up and have 2 cups of coffee and a little cream during the morning. I go out and walk around 7,000 steps. Before noon I have oatmeal with cinnamon, ground flax, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and some blueberries and a little almond milk. That holds me over till 3:00 pm. I then have a small saled of arugula with Olive oil and a portion of cottage cheese. Dinner is Broiled Salmon, small sweet potato and asparagus. I drink plenty of water. Kiwi for snack. I feel great. Am losing 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per week. And I really enjoy eating everything with strict portion control. Its working for me. I just couldn't live eating all meat, chicken, and lots of fat and missing out on all the wonderful varieties of bread, fruits and vegetables. The secret to my success is portion control. No Charley horses, weakness, dizziness upon standing, or any of the other crazy symptoms I experienced on keto/carnivore. Congratulations, you've just discovered that the only thing that's driving fat loss is energy balance. Energy absorbed vs energy used by your body. There's no magic to any diet, you can eat whatever you want , and if you are able to use more energy than you absorb from your foods, you are going to lose fat. Always. Until you die.

I wish I could eat carbs in moderation, but I have found that I am definitely addicted to the sugars… once I have any - I end up getting of control and in no time sick from it. For me zero carbs is the only way I feel consistently healthy. I have to treat it like alcohol addiction. You are very blessed to be able to dabble 💕

Your electrolyte brand has stevia. Stevia is a diuretic and so you lose your electrolytes along with the fluid. There are many issues with ALL forms of stevia and in any amounts. A word to the wise.

    • @ToddDouglasFox
      @ToddDouglasFox 4 месяца назад +1

@@kathleensaeva2649 my comment was to the channel. The product she held up is flavored. Most people will NOT drink unflavored. But my point is that since she has pinned high Vit D intake for not absorbing magnesium, there are other issues in what she is doing that could account for her low magnesium. If she was or is taking this brand of electrolytes, her effort to get sufficient magnesium could be thwarted or reversed by stevia. Additionally there is no balance in the unflavored (same as flavored) option: 1k mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, 60 mg magnesium. 1. How does this help the sodium/potassium pump which is a 1 to 2 ratio? 2. How is a strict carnivore going to correct the RDA from too little magnesium? The recommended two packets equals close to RDA sodium and still only 120 mg of magnesium, 2/3 deficient. Suggesting LMNT to resolve or even augment the magnesium issue is a dead end. It’s basically an expensive salt product. The company advertises paleo and keto by the way but Redmond’s and dietary potassium and magnesium is a workable option for all diets while LMNT is not. Potassium, I predict, will be the next in line for nutrient concerns. If the cell pump isn’t optimal, it doesn’t matter the diet, waste sits in an acidic state, and nothing can get repaired and regenerated. This is all readily available information. Too many seek answers from influencers which all too often is insufficient and thus wrong.
Get potassium and magnesium in your diet folks. Be sure it balances with sodium intake and water, too much water is not going to be beneficial. Determine the proper ratio. And as a caveat, tap water is dead water. Water in plastic leaches plastic particles. Drinking water must be sourced from a healthy aquifer and in glass. Once upon a time, water had plenty of potassium, magnesium, sodium by the way. The levels are much lower, so get your electrolytes additionally.
      You’re welcome. 😉

I also have been taking 10,000 IUs of D3 + K2 for most of that time, except in warm weather when I’m outside a lot. I’m 65, and live at the same latitude as Chicago. So, winter, and not much sunlight a lot of the year. I also have been supplementing with Mg + K. My symptoms got milder when I decided to drink less water. I believe I was washing out my electrolytes. QUESTION: I believe I/we get waaay more than 10K IUs of D3 when we’re outside with skin exposed to sunlight this time of year (I have a good tan going on my hands already!), so does this increase-the-Mg/K-minerals idea apply to the sunlight exposure way of manufacturing my own D3, too? 🤔 I’ve been doing a lot of yardwork the last couple weeks. For me, I dont really use supplemental vitamin D in the summer because I dont need it, I am out in the sun everyday :)

@@JennyMitich As to why Inuit don't take D supplements.

Your body depletes electrolytes when you aren’t eating carbs. Carbs make you retain water which is where the minerals are. You can get a lot from meat only but most need a little more because there’s only so much you can eat. We don’t need to eat vitamins. We get it all in our diet. Minerals are different.

If you’re having muscle cramping try eating more beans, greens, and grains. Loads of potassium and magnesium and manganese and B vitamins in them. The problem with super restrictive diets like Carnivore is that you’re getting an over abundance of certain nutrients (which can become a problem over time- I’m looking at you heme-iron 👀), and a deficiency in other nutrients (Vitamin C, potassium, Vitamin K, magnesium, manganese, folate, etc). By all means, meat can certainly play a role in a healthy, balanced diet. But only meat? You’re asking for some long term trouble and pain. All the best to you. 💕

The truth is pretty much everybody in western civilization is already going to be low on potassium and most on magnesium. Even those who eat the vegetables. Vegetable forms aren’t very bioavailable so you can eat a ton of vegetables and still come up short because your body can’t absorb them. Supplementing, whether it be in the form of electrolytes or mineral supplement is almost necessary, because our foods are grown in barren soil with chemical fertilizers and don’t have these minerals in them and even on a carnivore diet we were traditionally be getting minerals from water sources. If you’re drinking from a natural spring or a river that water probably has minerals in it also feedlot beef is fed garbage grain and is going to have a lot less of nutrients and vitamins in general than grass, fed beef and magnesium and potassium and DN K2, these all sort of work together with other vitamins, and when one is down, others aren’t functioning or being used as well, another thing would be excessive drinking of fluids flushes it out of our system especially if you’re drinking diet soda or something that taste good and makes you drink more or just pushing the water as we drink minerals are flushed out of our system so when we drink too much water that isn’t mineralized then we’re depleting those minerals already.
10k on the vitamin D on a regular basis is a bit much 5000 is way more than anybody needs 10,000 would be to fix a problem or to get back where you need if you have a severe deficiency and make sure you’re taking it with K2 and the magnesium and potassium, and of course the sodium and chloride And of course that you’re getting fat in your system which with carnivore usually isn’t a problem, but a lot of people seem to be on low-fat diets and try to eliminate fat to reduce cholesterol or whatever and the fat or cholesterol is what our bodies use for our hormones, and carrying and absorption of vitamins, and transporting them to the cells to use them. there’s this big huge combination of all of our nutrients and minerals that work together and a lot of them kind of pivot and work off of others so one deficiency can lead to multiple problems.
I’m glad you’ve got it figured out, I had the same thing when I started very strict keto diet, I started getting twitching and muscle cramps from magnesium deficiency even though I was pounding down green vegetables and leafy grains, but the reality is, we can’t really eat enough of that stuff to get Enough of these minerals and vitamins out of it they’re just not bioavailable it’s all locked up in the fiber and just passes through us. Strangely every problem I had on a strict clean keto diet was resolved by eating more meat and making sure I was getting sufficient minerals. Magnesium like you said citrate or glycinate Along with potassium and of course plenty of salt and if we’re eating enough red meat, especially a grass fed beef with the fat and we should be good in just a regular multivitamin will give us most of everything else we need. But sunlight is critical and a supplement in the winter or for inside all day is a good thing, but unless you have problems from a severe deficiency 10k is a bit over the top. It’s a good video to put out there because lots and lots of people have these problems and not just on a carnivore or keto type diet, western civilization in the way we grow our food, even if you’re a vegan, even if you’re eating tons of vegetable sources they’re not there anymore. The soil been depleted they grow two or three crops per year they never take years off. They never replenish the soil. They use chemical fertilizers, and or fruits and vegetables even Void of nutrients and are basically starch and sugar and fiber, and are in many cases, completely useless in all cases are fairly deficient in general, and the idea that we can get a healthy diet without eating meat is from a scientific and clinical standpoint ridiculous yet that’s what people keep telling us to do so a lot of people have these problems. Plenty of red meat and healthy wildcat fish and drinking from streams and springs and working outside. We wouldn’t have these problems but it’s a different world so we need to adapt. The potassium is also critical, we need a ton of potassium and we just don’t get it anymore. It’s just not in our food at the levels. It should be at almost everyone on the planet is going to be deficient in potassium and your doctors will tell you to eat bananas but you gotta eat like 65 bananas a day to get enough potassium, and that amount of sugar will destroy your body and of course potatoes from magnesium, there’s not much magnesium in the potatoes anymore because they’re grown in baron, used up soil and a ton of sugar and unless you’re eating them raw, they’re useless, water was part of our natural diet and water used to be unprocessed and full of minerals But we don’t get that anymore. All of our water is processed and everything stripped out of it while they’re removing the pollutants under course we have this bottled water fad where people are drinking heavily filtered water, which is great to get rid of pollutants, but it also strips out of the minerals makes it very soft and the more we drink the more it strips our bodies of those minerals so mineralizing our water and plenty of salt and healthy salt with other minerals. Other than just sodium and chloride is essential. The processing of our food is destroying our food and making people sick. Even people go carnivore because I have problems with vegetables, myself included. It depends on the vegetables so I can find actual vegetables grown in the proper soil without the chemicals at it I can usually tolerate them, and they have exponentially more nutrients, but most of what we buy at the store even the health food stores is void of these nutrients and our food suppliers being destroyed by the food industry. people should shop local find someone who’s got cows and chickens out there eating grass like they should be chickens eating bugs, running around in the woods and in the fields and pastures and Cal is eating grass and being moved so they’re not parasite problems don’t need an antibiotic and steroids and wild caught seafood and because of mercury you want small variety that sardines the chunk light tuna the young salmon, but we should try to source everything locally find out how it’s grown because the government regulations mean nothing they can put whatever they want in the bottles and pretend it something else, it’s almost impossible to get decent olive oil anymore vegetables are garbage fruit is garbage a lot of the cheap meat is garbage and this is why disease affects 30 to 50% of the population instead of just under one percent like it normally did throughout history and mineral supplementation is critical and not just because people are on carnivore or keto diet, I was eating six or 7 cups a day of leafy greens with Christophers vegetables, and I was getting muscle twitches and cramps because I could not get enough magnesium and potassium and I took a supplement and it went away literally literally and an hour. Heart problems with arrhythmia, and your pulse rate are highly affected by potassium, but doctors just keep giving you meds. I had a pretty accelerated heart rate it was always in the mid 80s and above and even after I started eating correctly and got my blood pressure down to perfect in eliminating my heart disease, I still had a very high pulse all the time even at rest, and, finally one day in my research came up with potassium has already taken magnesium and everything else and I went to Walmart and got some cheap potassium and bingo. My heart rate dropped 10 points that night and no doctor ever told me this. Anyway, I’m glad you made your video Cuz. I study and follow thousands of people who do this and it’s a very common problem and the magnesium and potassium specifically are very common problem amongst almost everybody, I bet if you tested everybody in western civilization about 99.9% of them would be severely deficient in potassium and most of them fairly deficient in magnesium.

Hello! I talked about that in this video, extremely high levels of vitamin D supplementation can create a drain on your magnesium stores. In the case of a carnivore diet, you are not consuming as much magnesium as someone eating a normal diet, which is fine in most cases. But throw in extremely high levels of vitamin D supplementation and you can find yourself unable to replenish your magnesium stores with just diet alone, hence the need for magnesium supplementation. Lesson: dont supplement with high levels of D unless you also supplement with magnesium, esp. within the context of a carnivore diet. D is best derived from the sun :)
