Hey Matti!! Hope all is well with you and your family...
Knowing you in person, having the privilege of being your friend and also having had the pleasure of photowalking with you, I can certainly say that you couldn't care less about the camera brand you use for photography. Albeit for video I know you did choose the best tool for your needs and that was Sony, but photography wise I couldn't agree more with you. Its all about light, shadows, contrast, composition and storytelling (by far the most important feature in photography) regardless of the camera you are holding. That is photography, the camera is just a tool you use to tell the story.
All the best my friend, hope to see you in a near future.

But it is up to everyone to handle with it. Every little quirky step let us grow with our experience, knowledge and skills

Great video Matti. I think the problem is if you buy into a system you naturally watch people who use that system, so get sucked in more. I went with Olympus MFT for size & budgetary reasons, but have enjoyed expanding into a Sony a6500 and investing in a set of budget friendly lenses for that including some 3rd party. I’ll retain my Olympus gear for travel.

Thank you! I get your video. The reason you are an excellent photographer is that you shoot every day, for over 30 years. I used to run around the streets of Philadelphia in the 1970's with a rangefinder, Tri-X, develop and print, a hobby for me. Today in my travels on a bicycle or with a backpack I use my iPhone. Editing consists of exposure adjust, and contrast adjust in camera. Then send the files to Smugmug for a few 4x6" prints. You took the risk of working pro and starving artist when you were young, and you stuck with it! Respect to you.

Nice job! I use a G9, a Z7ii, and an X100f, depending on the situation. Each produces excellent results but each has very different menus and controls and that’s a problem for me. My first camera was a hand-me-down Argus C3. I was 12 years old. Now, 64 years later, remembering which function buttons are which and where to find menu items on each different camera is a challenge. Oh, for my cameras of the past, the Nikon F2, Hasselblad 501c or the Leica M7, cameras that just took fine photographs, simply. Ed

On our next trip, I will only bring the Olympus E-PL7. Not decided about the lens(es) yet, but we’re going to Spain, and I don’t want a large kit on the plane. I take most of my pictures with my Ricoh GR3x... then, my Nikon DSLRs... (4 of them)... and then my Lumix MFT cameras... (3 of them). I use these cameras mostly due to the lenses I have. If I shoot video... the Panasonic Lumix FZ300 works quite well. I'm not making movies for Hollywood. I'm making videos to tell a story. The FZ300 has, really, excellent stabilization and the huge depth of field with its little sensor provides satisfactory focus. I can't remember being disappointed with it. Not once. Like life in general, it's what you value. As far as brands... they're all good. Moved from Nikon SLRs to Nikon DSLRs. Bought Panasonic to transition to mirrorless, because Nikon didn't have the mirrorless I wanted at the time (pre Z mount). I like all of my cameras, and would probably like yours too. Sony menus are a real turnoff for me. That's what we have at my workplace. I reluctantly shoot with it. Personally, I find Sony cameras to be a pain in the posterior, but I respect your decision to own and use them.

Thank you so much for your very informative video as usual.
It was 1950. Jun Miki, a photographer for LIFE magazine, borrowed a Nikkor P・C 8.5cm F2 lens belonging to a photographer friend of his who happened to be visiting, and took a snapshot of David Douglas Duncan. At that moment, Duncan did not show much interest, saying, "Ha, a Japanese-made Sonnar," but when Miki showed him the enlarged photo later, Duncan's expression suddenly changed. He took out a loupe and began to check the photo.
"It's sharp. Let's go to this company right away!"
Since then, people have been using Leica 35mm lenses and Nikon 85mm lenses. They are lenses with two different lens mounts. People have been carrying two cameras made by two different manufacturers. (In 1950, Nikon was producing lenses for Leica, yes, but that did not last long.)
There has been nothing wrong about that picture.
(True, you cannot but you do not need to exchange lenses in that set up, two camera bodies, two lenses, period, no other cameras nor lenses in your camara bag.)
So, traditionally, historically, you are right. You do not necessarily have to talk about "switching" systems.
You can have your own "system" by mixing cameras made by some different manufacturers. You can carry one Ricoh GR and a mirrorless camera from somebody else other than Ricoh with a mid-telephoto lens, and nothing else.

@@mattisulanto The coolest setup I have ever seen was ... Ah, there was this young (back then) photographer, who is a US citizen with African ethnic background. He took those street snap shots of those kids playing basketball on the streets, etc. This guy used Leica M6 with a 35mm lens and Nikon F3 with Ai AF Nikkor 85mm F1.8D!!!!! He used the lens as a manual focus lens!!!! Amazing. No, not Ai Nikkor 85mm F2S. The photographs he took were absolutely fantastic. Anyway, this guy followed the tradition... One Leica, one Nikon. Two different lens mounts. That is perfectly okay.
Having said that though, almost all students attending photography schools used to have two Nikon FM2n bodies, one in chrome color, and the other in black color, Ai Nikkor 28mm F2.8S (S version is significantly better than non-S version), Ai Nikkor 50mm F1.8 and Ai Nikkor 105mm F2.5. That was because students had to take pictures of various subjects. That is, as your style becomes more established, the number of lenses you carry may decrease.
One can argue that there are two groups of people.
One group of people feel that 35mm is their "standard" lens. They prefer 85mm as their choice of mid-telephoto. The other group of people experience that 50mm is their eyes. For them, that is the natural angle of view. They tend to choose 105mm as their mid-telephoto. Ah, yes, if they have to use telephoto, they choose 135mm and 200mm, respectively.
Suppose your natural eye is 50mm, then,
You can carry the broader setup: 28mm - 50mm - 105mm (the setup for students).
Or you can carry the tighter setup: 35mm - 50mm - 85mm (the intermediate setup).
But then, when you have 35mm and 85mm on your two camera bodies, and 50mm in your camera bag, hey, you may not need to carry the 50mm.... That is kinda sorta strange, when we talk about it, since in the beginning, 50mm was your eye, your standard, but experienced photographers can understand this.
The expert setup is 35mm and 85mm.
When your "standard" is 35mm, then actually you can carry 28mm and 50mm, two lenses only, since when you have accumulated certain amount of experiences, you can now use a 28mm lens and a 50mm lens as a 35mm lens. You can now use your equipment. Your equipment stopped using you. I mean your lenses do not let you take photographs anymore. You do not need to take pictures of everything you see anymore. There are things whose photo you cannot take, and that is okay. You just appreciate them with your naked eyes.
Another expert setup is 28mm and 50mm.
(It is also okay for us to be excited by new products. You know, new toys.... That is a different topic altogether.)

Matti, completely agree that photography, and especially great photography, is way more than the gear. I have used many brands over the last 10 years. My experience is that over time, they have become much more capable and complex. Personally, I am reducing the number of different brands not due to brand loyalty. I am reducing brand variety to allow me to focus on taking images and use the gear to its fullest extent. A consistent user interface, shared lenses across bodies, and a variety of bodies/capabilities for different use cases is what I have found to be most important to me. Thanks for your efforts to spark conversation and teach your viewers.

The pushback against Sony was because a lot of RUclips vloggers jumped to the brand at the same time, for the same reason - continuous autofocus in video. That's a good reason for vloggers, but for other video makers and stills photographers it seemed like a niche interest dominating brand awareness. As other brands catch up with Sony's AF capabilities, I think RUclipsrs will begin to switch to more "characterful" camera brands.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  Год назад

That was the main reason, of course, like I mentioned in the video. However, for many RUclipsrs, though not for all, the camera is a tool and once you have a reliable tool and a smooth workflow, you don't want to change that without a good reason.

Variety is the spice of photography, for many years I used Pentax cameras exclusively. I was in the position that I did not have to sell prior camera bodies to upgrade the equipment I was using, I have most of the recent Pentax cameras, the KP, K5 MKII, The K3, k3 MKII and the MKIII also the K1 MKII, I have many Sigma and Pentax glass both primes and zoom lenses. At this point I have all the glass I need for the system. I have always liked what Fujifilm was doing with the retro design so I picked up a used XT3, I loved the camera so much that I considered the Xt4 but the screen stopped me when the XT5 and XH2 came out I got both, the XH2 was perfect match for the 100100-400mm lens and other larger lens. Through the years I added cameras from Panasonic and Olympus both full frame and micro 4/3. I photographe so many different subjects and I have been involved in event photography for over 5 years and I used a variety of cameras to do events. I guess I just enjoy photographing with different cameras and glass and can taylor my kit to fit the needs of the subject and place that I will be photographing in. Using different cameras and glass, photographing different subjects has kept photography fresh for me for years, also printing my work has expanded my photography and it opened the door to event photography.

Matt, I found your channel several years ago as I became more serious about shooting my Olympus MFT cameras and have always enjoyed your videos, and I will continue to watch your channel. However, while I don't "hate" any camera brand or format, I am a fiercely loyal to MFT and promote it every chance I can. I am this way in part to counter the vocal MFT haters (especially on RUclips) who spew inaccuracies, and in a larger part because I could never see myself lugging around massive FF lenses and bodies. That would take away so much of the joy of carrying a relatively light weight medium size bag with focal lengths from 14mm to 800mm, and two bodies. Or, the ease of carrying a miniscule 3 liter Peak Design bag with my OM-1 with a 12-100mm (23-200mm FF) lens and one small prime able to cover just about any situation. I have hundreds of photos because small size and weight advantages of MFT encourage me to always have a camera, which would not be the case with a big and heavy FF system I left at home that day. This is clearly a personal choice area, and personal choices often include a lot of passion.
Further, in a post OM-1 world (not to mention the upcoming Lumix GH9 II) about the only thing MFT gives up on paper to FF is a stop or two of dynamic range at very high ISO levels, and perhaps some noise that any number of AI-based post processing tools can eliminate in a snap. These are sensor limitations which don't affect my photograph, but everyone they will soon go away. Other reports on RUclips describe sensors already on the market (most from Sony, I'll admit) that pack far higher pixel densities into a give space than any digital camera sensor. The move of high tech devices to smaller, lighter, faster is universal and will happen inevitably to digital cameras. Already the DSLR is about gone from new products, but FF will never be able to compete with MFT on lens size and weight. With next generation processors making sensor size a distinction without a difference then the "format wars" will become mostly political and not technical, and most people will be shooting MFT and wondering why anyone every wanted such giant old FF monster cameras. Time will tell if I have a crystal ball or not. 🙂

I switched to the Leica SL and M system with a SL 601, M10, and M10 Monochrom but I didn’t sell off my entire MFT kit. I did switch from a Lumix G9 to a used Olympus E-M1 Mark III with low shutter count as it was smaller and less bulky than the G9. But I did sell off my expensive Panasonic-Leica lenses and only kept 3 Olympus lenses and one fully manual lens that only cost $50 😂.
I tried to sell it completely off but I do love using my Olympus on occasion and reliving the wonderful memories I had when I first started photography which was with an Olympus E-M5 Mark II. It’s like my soul was telling me to keep the only 3 AF lenses I use often and sell off the rest as I would regret it in the long term. Luckily I also used to collect premium action figures which have gained value over time so that’s what I’m still currently selling off to fill in the hole in my pocket that the recent Leica M10 Monochrom purchase made 😅

Nothing could touch it for a while. Even their compacts like the rx100 were astonishing when they hit. @@patrickmckeag3215 It's complicated. I agree switching brands is an expensive business, and a camera would have to show real inadequacies on a daily basis to make a brand swap worthwhile. On the other hand some manufacturers have given up competing in the mass market (Pentax), or have changed their focus (Fuji), or offered innovations in their flagship models when the competition (Sony, Panasonic) put their best tech into all cameras. So the game of leapfrog where a favourite manufacturer would catch up or supersede the competition with the next model, doesn't always hold today.
For me, instinctive familiarity with button placement and menus is worth more than notional advances in IQ, and I change brands very reluctantly, even though I'm happy to keep older cameras from different makers because they have their uses. Of course this opinion does not acknowledge the way the market works, which is to hype new models, keep the manufacturers in business, and push better tech for all of us. Finally, I think new cameras are becoming too expensive for the extra capabilities they offer.

He uses Leica M Mount manual lenses using an adapter and he says the images he gets from the 24MP sensor from both cameras (same sensor) are better than he gets from the Hasselblad. What are the differences between the cameras? He says the output is the same, but the Leica menu system is easier to use. What about Sony? He is scathing. He calls them colour photocopiers and the images have no soul. They are too sharp and he does not use auto focus or video anyway. For that he says use a proper video camers thats designed for it, not some hybrid stills camera.

Well said. I do a lot of gigs where I’m not the photographer, and I always ask the shooter what they are using, because I’ve done broadcast television, and I’m always wanting to know why they are using their current setup. I’m not brand loyal. If they have a Sony body using a Canon lens and their work is something fantastic, then I am going to consider their choices into my next purchase. I don’t do a lot of video these days, but when I get back to doing video, the next camera is probably going to be a Sony guy for the reasons you laid out. My Canon is great for stills, but video quality is lacking in low light conditions. Again, thank you for your expertise

After spending time and money on my Olympus cameras and glass, I thought I might look into the $ony. I looked at Fuji as well...both with great reputations. The problem is the cost of the glass...although I love Tamron and Sigma. After calculatng my cost (losses) lol, and the fact that $ony keeps kicking out the newer and better camera at blurring rates, I will remain in M4/3rds world unttil clientele demands something different. Thanks to you, G9 was my frst M4/3 camera after leaving Canon. I can't wait to get your take (once its out there) on the G9ii!

I've not been a brand loyal but when I have lot of lenses for some lens mount it makes changing cameras a pain. Lacking the lenses for some other brand make it expensive to get another brand on the side too. I have a lot of camera gear from my Canon time and MFT was good because I was able to adapt stuff with speed booster.
Mirrorless cameras with shorter flange distance make adapters possible which is a great thing!

To be honest, the only thing that looks bad is a brand ambassador to use openly/advertise other brand besides the brand he represents, or worse, starting to bash the brand/format they supported once their contract is terminated, or not renewed... Otherwise, they can use whatever they want to, no one really cares, or has anything to do with it...

Great video Matti, I find the fanboy behaviour really quite disappointing. Afterall, we all share a love of photography. I do shoot, and I have shot with multiple brands and multiple sensor formats. There is no perfect camera (and there never will be). There are just some cameras that suit certain peoples' requirements better than others, and people need to appreciate this instead of being narrow minded gear heads. I love gear too, but best of all I enjoy experiencing the subtle differences each system has to offer.

I'm just an amateur and I must admit that I'm a bit religious about Fujifilm cameras. There's just something about them and the images you get from them that I love. I'm too lazy to do much editing of images and with my X-T20 the JPEGs I get straight out of the camera look so good that I usually don't feel any need to edit them. With my Panasonic GM5 and G100 I just haven't been able to find an image setting that make me quite as happy about the JPEGs the camera produces. Despite some quirks about the X-T20 that I really don't like (such as having anything in the tripod mount will block the battery compartment, and the autofocus not always being that great) I still feel that I have more fun taking photos with the Fuji and seeing some of the images it produces just makes me happy somehow. There's just something about the color and the mood that suits me.
Still, the Panasonics are definitely not bad cameras. I almost always have my tiny and lightweight GM5 with me just to have a "real" camera in case I see something interesting to take a photo of. With the 12-35mm F2.8 it takes pretty decent images even in low light. The G100 is almost as lightweight and it's the camera I usually bring with me when I travel. I actually prefer the handling of the G100 to the X-T20 and the autofocus also feels slightly better. But there's still something special about the Fuji.
Some of this might be tinted by nostalgia though. After selling off my analog gear I mostly used tiny compact cameras such as the Canon IXUS 90, Panasonic Lumix FX35, and Fuji XF1. I really liked the Canon, the FX35 was more "meh", but there was something about the XF1 that made me love it. The JPEGs straight out of camera looked good for the time and I really enjoyed the handling thanks to having a mechanical zoom on such a tiny camera. A couple of my favorite photos ever were taken with that camera. Too bad that the mechanical quality of the zoom crap, when my first XF1 broke I bought another second hand and it also broke pretty soon after that. That's when I got my my first proper digital camera with interchangeable lenses, a X-T10 with the 18-55mm kit lens. That's the camera that really made me take up and enjoy photography as a hobby again. After that the X-T20 was just an incremental upgrade with basically the same feel, slightly better specifications and some quality of life improvements as a touchscreen.
I probably would be almost as happy with other camera brand so I'm not fanatical. There are other cameras such as the Ricoh GR series and Sony's APS-C cameras that I'm definitely interested in. Bit still, after trying out some other camera brands, if I had to choose just one camera, I still prefer the Fuji X-T20.

Although I also have a Sony A9, it doesn't get used as much anymore because I feel it's not as fun to use as the Sony A7RIIIA even though it has better autofocus, but maybe that's just me?

I never understood people's self-created "superiority" when it comes to brands of camera. I bought a Sony a100 when they first came out, then a a200, a330, and eventually went FF with a a900. I bought the excellent Ziess 16-35, 24-70, and the G series 70-400. This was before anyone really paid Sony cameras any attention - basically the mentality was if it wasn't Canon or Nikon - it wasn't worth using (I had actually been told that several times by other photographers.....lol) I used to do event photography/automotive, and would encounter another "pro" who used Olympus gear at the events. We used to always joke about how "snobbish" the Canon and Nikon shooters (and 99% of the time it was a hobbyist with a kit lens/entrylevel dslr setup) were - and by snobbish we mean downright rude. I guess the majority of people have to have some sort of affirmation of their purchase - and it often manifests into undesirable behavior. After a couple years of using the gear and capturing fantastic images that paid for the gear - I sold it all off due to the toxic community when it comes to being a "semi-pro" photographer. I dabbled with a Nikon D90 for a few months - but that camera just wasn't a "fit" for me and I sold it.
Fast forward several years and I was on a trip, and wished I had a camera other than my phone. I bought a Sony Nex3, then later a Nex5, and then a used Nex7 (which I still have.) This lead me down the path of vintage lenses and adapters. I have been shooting with the Nex7 for the last 7 or 8 years (when I bought it was considered "outdated" I paid ~300USD of Ebay...lol) and have gotten stunning images out of it. I even like the video it produces as the colors are great (to my eye.)
I decided I wanted a "new" camera with modern features and 4k Video - so I once again started looking at the Sonys, mainly the A7 line. However I kind of wanted to try something different - but wanted to keep my vintage lenses. I read a lot, watched a lot - and ended up buying a brand new Lumix G9 about three months ago. The features vs price was attractive to me. It came with the "kit" 12-60 (which I get excellent results with) and I also bought an Olympus 40-150 Pro (that I adore.) So now I have the two cameras I mainly use - the Lumix and my old, well worn Nex7 (and a first gen Pentax Q.) I really do love the G9 and the Oly 40-150 though, it blows me away with the "feel" of the pictures. I tried Canon and Nikons - but for whatever reason they didn't feel like "me." Nothing wrong with them, just didn't like the experience.
I guess the TL;DR is - brand loyalty is stupid. There is no "brand for life" as it evolves. I always laugh when people leave reviews or make comments like "I will never use anything different" or "Customer for life" as it is a silly concept as every manufacturer has hits or misses. Find a system that "feels" right to you and snap away. All the time people spend being "brand haters/loyalist" would be better spent taking pictures/video. I have found it nearly universally true that the people who "hate" the hardest based on camera brand generally have low talent behind their gear because they are in it for the wrong reason. We live in a very divisive time period - so why spoil the fun/art/challenge of photography with gatekeeping, brand snobbery, and conflict.

I subscribed to learn about my Lumix cameras. If you talk about gear that's not Lumix, I'm not interested. I'm done with following people talking about gear.
I am interested in photography, of course, and people talking about photography techniques. Lik Christen Fletcher, Jamie Windsor, Imitative Photography.
Some I follow for their stories. Lia Frost, Kim Grant, Simon Phillips.
I own and use Olympus, Lumix G, Lumix S. In my past are Canon, Fujifilm, Pentax (135 film).
Each time I have bought a camera, it's to increase the range of photographs I can, or sometimes for a feature I think useful.
My 5Ds was replaced with a Lumix S1R plus adaptor, so I can continue to use particular lenses. It has WiFi/Bluetooth, high resolution. The last is the reason for this above any competing FF mirrorless camera at the time.
I wasn't happy with AF on the G9, so OM-D EM-1 II and, eventually, an E-Mx for its live ND and built in GPS. I went M43 because I tired of lugging the 5Ds around the streets of Perth.

Photography wise, I don't think there has really been any groundbreaking advancements in years - really all you get is incremental improvements in each brand's line, and they're all more or less comparable to each other.
Video is a different story, because it's so much newer as a feature, and it's so resource heavy that improvements in efficiency are regularly opening up significant new features, so there's still opportunities for a brand to make a giant leap forward, which then leads to everyone jumping on the band wagon of that camera, until everyone else catches up.
For example - Panasonic really lead out of the gate on genuine hybrid stills cameras, and for a while everyone interested in video used a Lumix MFT camera. Eventually the other brands caught up, then Sony blew everyone else out of the water with low light performance, and became the go to brand. Close behind that Sony got a double whammy because they also leaped ahead of everyone else on video autofocus, and those two leading steps really cemented them as the go-to brand if you also wanted to shoot video.
But every other brand is steadily closing the gap on Sony, and we're almost back to everyone being about equal until the next revolutionary breakthrough comes - if it comes. Eventually we'll reach a point where the video features are like the photography features - pretty much every brand performs the same, and each brand only improves performance in small incremental steps with each new release. We may have a couple more big leaps forward before we reach that stalemate point, but I don't think we're far off.
