- The Barcarolle from Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann spins an enchanting melody for two, here soprano Fatma Said and mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa. The program presents, in Fatma's words, "a montage of many different songs and arias, each with its own kind of story to tell through a particular style of music - and rhythm." The thread that weaves them together is the theme of dance: "I’ve always felt inspired by the physical and internal movement in dancing - whether with a partner or alone - and for me it represents another way of expressing myself."

Very nice indeed but...when 2 vocalists or 2 instrumentalists perform in unison, they should agree on who should be slightly dominant. In this case the voices contest each other (not intentionally) but by equal individuality of musical character. Possibly, it is the fault of the engineers. It would be obvious to any musician/engineer that they should have used a double ribbon microphone on Ms. Crebassa or a condenser with a softer vacuum tube.
@@dennisdougherty7538 I don't hear it (the voices contesting each other) and am unsure what you mean by this. Also I don't support your contention that an agreement should be reached who should be slightly dominant. Why? Of course the part/singer who starts grabs the ear first and serves as the vocal point of reference for the duet, but not due to dominance rather to place of origin. I think this performance works beautifully, no need for either to dominate, not even slightly. I find no tension or contest here as you claim, rather a smooth and balanced complimentarity.

the engineering that went into the placing of the microphones to keep the voices balanced alone in this performance is incredible... im sure both women went through crazy extents to not overpower eacthoer.. but the microphone setup clearly indicates they spent A LOT of time perfecting this and it shows in the performance.
i have never in my life hear such a perfect harmony of voices... truly incredible.
it truly sounds as if these two women are trying to convince the other that they have the most beautiful voice in the world and they dont believe it so they must compare.. even though each of them is complimenting the other in the best way they possibly could imagine.. only making each of them sound even more angelic..

Sometimes you see a performer who's doing fine but you sense that they're there because that's the job....when you watch these two you sense their love of the music.
Their beautiful singing voices are out of this world, and unrivaled, and indescribable, and off the charts.
Both singers are wonderful in this performance! I must confess that I look for, and always enjoy, Marianne Crebassa when she sings in a recording session like this. She just always seems to be enjoying herself so much, in a less formal setting where she is free to show her enjoyment and emotions! Brava!😍

The actual context from the opera is that the song is being song by gondoliers in Venice. If you've seen them, they propel the craft with a stern mounted oar slowly swinging left to right, right to left, like a large sinuous fish.

So many of the romantic classics, written in a gentler time, seem trite and dated these days, and Offenbach's Barbarella fits into that category. But this performance is beautiful. I have loved Marianne Crebassa's voice for years, and time hasn't done it any harm. Thank you for this. It made a good day even better.

The singing by the two ladies is very nice. But, I want to especially compliment the conductor and orchestra on the playing of this beautiful duet. It caught just right the swaying rhythm of the piece, sensuous and subtle. Like the rocking movement of a attractive woman's hips as she parades slowly by you. Excellently done.
