As I recall, the choreography for Good Evening was designed to not make much eye contact with the audience. They spend most of the performance looking at the ground, the sky, or at each other.
To understand SHINee's "Good Evening" MV what you need to know is that it had only been about 5 months when this MV came out since Jonghyun died, and this song and MV is all about how SHINee and Shawols have been grieving and are finally ready to begin to heal and come out of the darkness into the light. The album is called The Story of Light and it's all about finding the light out of the darkness, etc. It's about how the members are learning to continue on without Jonghyun and find happiness and light in a situation that will forever be difficult. May 25, 2018, when this MV was released, was SHINee's 10th anniversary, so this was also important because it was a comeback to commemorate their 10 years as a group. The choreography for "Good Evening" is very deliberate. The reason the choreography is like that is because it depicts them going through the grieving process and it tells the story of all the emotions they went through and how, now at the end, they have made the choice to continue on as a group and keep on running, etc. The choreography is really complex and beautiful and really fits the song well. It becomes clearer once you see it in its entirety and start to understand the story behind it all. Fun fact: the choreographer for this song was Koharu Sugawara, who was featured in Taemin's "Move" MV, as well as choreographed several of Taemin's other songs, and also collaborated with several other choreographers on Taemin's "Criminal" MV. As you may remember, she is a famous Japanese choreographer who has known Taemin for years, so it was really special she was able to work on this project because she got to be a part of SHINee's healing process. In the MV, not only is the extra shadow that appears when they look into the tunnel/well at the end speculated to be Jonghyun's shadow, but the fox is thought to also represent him. Onew intensely stares into the eyes of the fox, almost as if he is communicating with the fox through his thoughts, and, to me, it's as if he is sharing a moment with Jonghyun. There is a fox in the story "The Little Prince" and "The Little Prince" was one of Jonghyun's favorite stories. Plus, a fox often represents the afterlife and the spirit of someone who has passed on reincarnated in many cultures. Also in the beginning there is an empty chair. An empty chair is often used to represent the spirit of someone who has passed on as well. But that's just a small portion of the hidden messages within this MV. If you really delve in deep you will discover that the whole MV can be connected to SHINee forever being 5 members and them including Jonghyun in all that they do. There are 5 trees at the end, which could represent the fact that, as Onew has said, even though you may only see 4 members on stage, SHINee will forever be a group of 5. They are in a room full of cameras and their images are being projected on the TV screens, which I see as representing the fact that because SHINee is living in the public eye they can never escape from always being watched by the public. Which doesn't allow them the private space to really grieve and to express themselves and they are always being judged (both the members in their grieving process and what Jonghyun had to go through and what ultimately led him to feeling the way he did, etc.) This MV used a lot of green and aqua blue light to depict the cool and somber feel of the story, but it also was used because pearl aqua blue/green is SHINee's fan color and it was used to represent Jonghyun's presence all around them and the support and solidarity they felt with Shawols. The story in the MV is showing the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) the members went through and how they have now at the end of the MV started to find their way out of it and have made the choice to continue to keep on running and continue on as a group, etc. But I could go on and on ... every part of this MV has a deeper message and meaning, you just have to open yourself up to the fact that everything in this MV has multiple meanings and purposes. We see Minho with those oranges, which is really just a giant pile of orange peels, because this part is supposed to depict how he is blindly just going through life, not even able to process what is happening around him. He is not even looking at the peels. It is like his body and mind is on autopilot. If you notice, none of the members ever make eye contact with the camera the entire MV and even in their live performances of the song, you will never see them look at the camera. This was done deliberately as well because they wanted to show how in their grief they were blind to everything that was going on around them and they were closed off to the world and didn't care what was happening outside of themselves even though the world was watching their every move. The part where Key smashes the piano is only one example of of how SHINee shows how they felt for a while after Jonghyun died -- they were angry at everything, including music, and in a way they were blaming "music" and their careers for what happened, and in the MV they were taking their anger out on the piano, etc. The plastic sheet and them flailing under water is supposed to represent how they felt suffocated in their grief and how grieving while in the public eye made them feel trapped at times, etc. Every scene, every image, every movement in their dance, every look, every moment they stand still or look blankly, etc. is very deliberate and is there for a reason. This comeback is part of a three part release celebrating SHINee's 10th anniversary. So they released 3 mini albums with 5 songs each in their The Story of Light trilogy and they had 3 comebacks each 2 weeks apart to showcase their lead track on each of their albums. "Good Evening" and "All Day All Night" were their comeback tracks from Episode 1, " I Want You" and "Who Waits for Love" were their comebacks from Episode 2 and Episode 3 was "Our Page" and "Tonight". Their comeback lasted 6 weeks to represent the fact that it was SHINee's 6th "full length" album. At the end of the six weeks they released a special final MV to celebrate their anniversary and all they have been through over the past 10 years with their song "Countless." "Countless" was an epilogue track that was added to their repackaged Story of Light album. FYI: If you haven't already, make sure when you watch "Our Page" that you also pair the MV with the official lyric video. Every word of "Our Page" was wrote by the members and it's all about Jonghyun. If you know what the lyrics are about it will help you to understand the story being told in the MV. (It would be helpful to understand the lyrics first BEFORE watching the MV.) The official lyric video is posted on SM's !t Live channel, ruclips.net/video/Ij0fwQtU3Kc/видео.html. Before this comeback SHINee had just come off their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) world tour and the members were doing solo activities as they worked on what was going to be an epic 10th anniversary comeback. With Jonghyun's passing, that set them back a few months because they were grieving. It also took time to figure out how they were supposed to function without Jonghyun. But SHINee never really stopped working. Two months after Jonghyun died, SHINee held their SHINee World -- The Best from Now On Concert in Japan and they pretty much were working nonstop until Onew, Key and Minho's enlistment. That concert had originally been planned as part of their 10th anniversary celebration and it had already been sold out. So SHINee felt obligated to honor their fans and continue the concert despite everything, which meant some extra work, because they already had been planning everything with Jonghyun. So they had to quickly go back to the drawing board and figure out how to do it with only 4 members and still honor Jonghyun's memory. In SHINee's fan meeting/concert for their 10th anniversary the members all vowed that SHINee will always be 5 and that Jonghyun will always be involved in everything they do. I think we are always going to have reminders of him in all that SHINee does from now on, and that is the way it should be. He was loved and will never be forgotten, and when possible, should always be involved in things that have to do with SHINee. OT5 forever and ever. I think we can feel Jonghyun's presence and influence in this album and songs because a lot of what made SHINee's sound uniquely SHINee (and this album is no exception) was because of Jonghyun. He not only shaped SHINee's sound because he was the main vocal of the group, but he also wrote and composed around 40% of SHINee's songs, so he can be felt in everything they do. It wouldn't be SHINee if we didn't hear his influence shine through in their music, that is what makes SHINee's sound so unlike any other. And, because of that, I think from now on we will always be searching for the hidden messages and moments that represent Jonghyun in everything SHINee does. For example, SHINee almost always leaves a space open in the middle of their choreographies where Jonghyun would be, and even in their new performances they leave room for him in their dances.
After reading some of the comments from viewers, I want to say that Onew is in a great place after taking a hiatus for his health. His old smile was back in the recent SHINee anniversary concert.
After Jonghyun, the media and agenda were focused on SHINee, while the other members didn't know what to do. At that time, Jonghyun's family supported them to stay together and move on. And if we take the fox as Jonghyun, they also get help from him to show the way. Because the fox, who met the little prince in the rose garden, taught him some life lessons and created a bridge for the prince to understand people. So to summarize, it's a message that they greeted us again with the support they received from Jonghyun and that the five of them are moving on together.
I highly recommend listening to the whole album, it’s so beautiful and the whole album is basically a dedication to Jonghyun. They released another track with an MV called Our Page and there’s a beautiful tribute to Jonghyun in it ❤
This comeback was in June, so yeah, about six months later. The real painful thing was that they had a series of upcoming concerts scheduled for February at Tokyo Dome, barely *two* months later. With a sold-out audience of 50,000-plus spectators, and the prestigious venue itself needing to be booked many months in advance, it wasn't something that would be easy to cancel. The company gave them the choice about whether to go ahead with the concerts. I can't say which way each member was leaning, but in the end, it was Jonghyun's mother who highly encouraged them to perform and keep going as SHINee. So they did the concerts, though it was obviously a very, very difficult time for them. In happier news, Jonghyun's mother and sister (his dad's been out of the picture for a long time) are still super close with SHINee and their families! Jonghyun's mother and sister still go to SHINee concerts and try to attend their solo events, too. SHINee bought five matching rings recently, which they've all been wearing since (I don't think Onew's taken his off at all) - they gave Jonghyun's ring to his sister. :)
It was probably one of the hardest part of their life but for me it's my favorite Kibum era. He is just savage and don't care anymore. His style is insanely good here ❤
Thanks for your reaction! As an old Shawol, I remember struggling to even start to watch the video. I cried I think at least the first 10 times I've watched it. It hurt a lot to know why Jonghyun wasn't there and the fact he would never be in another music video, or anywhere, because he lost his battle with his mental illness. Now it's a bittersweet memory. ❤
On the plus side, I've stopped crying when I watch the video, so that's progress. I love this song so much. While many shawols couldn't/can't bear to listen to The Story of Light, SHINee's 10th Anniversary album after Jjongie's passing, I could listen to nothing else. TSOL is a work of genius, one long love letter to Jonghyun. I like to think that every time I listen to it, Jonghyun knows I love him, too. Sugawara Koharu's choreography is simply fantastic. She did the choreography for Move by Taemin and well, we all know how that ended up. I hope she works with Onew in particular in the future. re: The Shirts - Jjong was on the radio with NCT as well as Sketchbook with Taeyeon, and he wore a black and white striped shirt and had the haircut all the dancers have. There's also a 5th shadow at the well with Jjong's silhouette. Key's hair was for his role in Hit-n-Run Squad (recommended, btw). He also smiles when he starts running in the forest - as do they all. He said "Acknowledge what happened and move on" which is advice for life, I think.
Thank you for this, not many go and review this time frame SHINee bc it was sensible times and many are still careful with it. But I really love SHINee made this album, it made me feel safe and hopeful in between such chaotic and negative everything
This song takes on a totally different meaning for me (I've never watched the mv, I'm fairly new fan). I thought it was a happy song (I never read the lyrics either). It's very lighthearted in the melody but heavy now that I watch the mv and the mv explained
15:30 In Korwan culture a "Fox Rain" is what we call a Sun Shower, when it rains but the skies are clear, no clouds. It' related to a traditional folklore story... That would be a very good allegory of how they are feeling, when everything seems ok externally and they are crying, ff3d up inside
It's interesting mentioning the rebirth theme. Also, fox symbolizes transformation. And to be honest, first time i watched this MV, the glass box surrounded by plants reminded me of the tv show " The OA" and (spoiler....) people who have near-death experiences and are kept in those glass cells and being subject of experimentations etc, being watched 24/7, then scaping... It's the same exact visuals
Watch the next one, I want you with 3d glasses. I believe the same, everything is up to our individual interpretation. It is why I never watch those videos that they post, this song according to a Korean, or video theories. Art is up to thr eye of the beholder. It is a personal feeling. Jonghyun said it on an interview for Guilty Pleasures, that it was his guilty pleasure to make an mv or a song and see how many meanings people and fans come up to.
I don't think we can reconcile Jonghyun with Key's shaving of his head. Someone who prefers to look in a different style and try new things in every music video. If we look at MV, they are rebelling against the sultry celebrity life they live. In South Korea, it is a very old tradition to protest by shaving your head. This action, which is based on the teaching of Confucius, also shows 'commitment to the cause' historical. And Key did something like this, depending on the concept and fashion. SHINee started talking about Jonghyun later, but before that they asked us to still support him.
The fox here is a citation from The Little Prince, Jonghyun's favourite book. But also in some Asian cultures, foxes are considered guides to the afterlife, if I remember correctly.
Thank you, enjoying your reactions. When you get to Our Page. Prepare yourself. 😢 That MV is one I recommend you look up the lyrics. It’s very important, for that song.
Some possible symbolism I’ve read that may feature in this MV. The forest in mythology/literature is often seen as a place of communication between worlds. It could also represent freedom, in contrast to when the members are under the spotlight represented with cameras on them, being watched in the public eye, while dealing with grief and pain. Some American tribes believe foxes serve as a guide from the spirit world, and the well could also represent a spiritual means of communicating with the other world?. Thank you for the great reactions 💎
Also, the choreo is not completely coordinated and more free style, there was a short time to learn it and start shooting. And also there's a fifth shadow when they look inside the well.
17:38 it's interesting that the color of the stage is then the same as the color of the next scene where they all drown. Does it mean that it's like a double shaped knife? they may be artists and living from the stages, the music, entertainment... but that is also where they drown and what causes the pain and despair etc
Excuses me Roscoe: Please React new Stray Kids MV JJAM. Stays keep voting for the Boys in the MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS/ BEST KPOP. You Can do it 20 times at once each 24 hours! LALALALA is nominated.
With regards that specific incident. In the last couple of weeks before Jonghyun passed he spent that time firstly with his mom and sister. Then with each member in turn. Key being the last one to see him. They had been due to meet only to wake up to the news of his passing the following day. It's why when you see the vid of Jonghyuns funeral how key was hit the hardest and couldn't contain his emotions.
As I recall, the choreography for Good Evening was designed to not make much eye contact with the audience. They spend most of the performance looking at the ground, the sky, or at each other.
The dance practice for this is my favorite dance practice of all times

Just wanna say as a dancer, this whole choreography is literally the different stages of grief! It’s so beautiful and sad!

This choreo is one of my favourite since Jonghyn has passed away and the guys started to be as four. i think the choreo is truly masterpiese.
I can definitely see them portraying trying to go through the stages of grief while still in the spotlight.
I haven't seen this video in a long time cuz I just couldn't bring myself to watch it.

The fox is a good friend to the Little Prince. I read the book every year around Jonghyun’s birthday. It really gets to me.
Shinee kalitedir.
Thank you for reacting to this MV ♥
Don't forget react to Shinee - Atlantis MV thank you ✨
Thank you, enjoying your reactions.
Please react to “Our Page” and “From Now On” they do have English Sub (both have live performance)
Hi Roscoe ❤, bella reacción 😊 y tienes mucha razón en lo que pudiste notar del video 🫶
❤❤❤

With regards that specific incident. In the last couple of weeks before Jonghyun passed he spent that time firstly with his mom and sister. Then with each member in turn. Key being the last one to see him. They had been due to meet only to wake up to the news of his passing the following day. It's why when you see the vid of Jonghyuns funeral how key was hit the hardest and couldn't contain his emotions.
They weren’t due to meet up. 🧐 Kibum was out of the country for a photoshoot when it happened and had to fly home on the spot.
