To understand SHINee's "Good Evening" MV what you need to know is that it had only been about 5 months when this MV came out since Jonghyun died, and this song and MV is all about how SHINee and Shawols have been grieving and are finally ready to begin to heal and come out of the darkness into the light. The album is called The Story of Light and it's all about finding the light out of the darkness, etc. It's about how the members are learning to continue on without Jonghyun and find happiness and light in a situation that will forever be difficult. May 25, 2018, when this MV was released, was SHINee's 10th anniversary, so this was also important because it was a comeback to commemorate their 10 years as a group.
The choreography for "Good Evening" is very deliberate. The reason the choreography is like that is because it depicts them going through the grieving process and it tells the story of all the emotions they went through and how, now at the end, they have made the choice to continue on as a group and keep on running, etc. The choreography is really complex and beautiful and really fits the song well. It becomes clearer once you see it in its entirety and start to understand the story behind it all. You really should check out SHINee's dance practice video for "Good Evening" to see the full choreography. (If you haven't already, you should also check out SHINee's rollercoaster version of the choreography that they performed on Weekly Idol.)
Fun fact: the choreographer for this song was Koharu Sugawara, who was featured in Taemin's "Move" MV, as well as choreographed several of Taemin's other songs, and also collaborated with several other choreographers on Taemin's "Criminal" MV. As you may remember, she is a famous Japanese choreographer who has known Taemin for years, so it was really special she was able to work on this project because she got to be a part of SHINee's healing process.
In the MV, not only is the extra shadow that appears when they look into the tunnel/well at the end speculated to be Jonghyun's shadow, but the fox is thought to also represent him. Onew intensely stares into the eyes of the fox, almost as if he is communicating with the fox through his thoughts, and, to me, it's as if he is sharing a moment with Jonghyun. There is a fox in the story "The Little Prince" and "The Little Prince" was one of Jonghyun's favorite stories. Plus, a fox often represents the afterlife and the spirit of someone who has passed on reincarnated in many cultures.
Also in the beginning there is an empty chair. An empty chair is often used to represent the spirit of someone who has passed on as well.
But that's just a small portion of the hidden messages within this MV. If you really delve in deep you will discover that the whole MV can be connected to SHINee forever being 5 members and them including Jonghyun in all that they do. There are 5 trees at the end which could represent the fact that, as Onew has said, even though you may only see 4 members on stage, SHINee will forever be a group of 5.
They are in a room full of cameras and their images are being projected on the TV screens, which I see as representing the fact that because SHINee is living in the public eye they can never escape from always being watched by the public. Which doesn't allow them the private space to really grieve and to express themselves and they are always being judged (both the members in their grieving process and what Jonghyun had to go through and what ultimately led him to feeling the way he did, etc.)
This MV used a lot of green and aqua blue light to depict the cool and somber feel of the story, but it also was used because, as you know, pearl aqua blue/green is SHINee's fan color and it was used to represent Jonghyun's presence all around them and the support and solidarity they felt with Shawols.
The story in the MV is showing the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) the members went through and how they have now at the end of the MV started to find their way out of it and have made the choice to continue to keep on running and continue on as a group, etc. But I could go on and on ... every part of this MV has a deeper message and meaning, you just have to open yourself up to the fact that everything in this MV has multiple meanings and purposes.
You see Minho with those oranges, which is really just a giant pile of orange peels, because this part is supposed to depict how he is blindly just going through life, not even able to process what is happening around him. He is not even looking at the peels. It is like his body and mind is on autopilot.
If you notice, none of the members ever make eye contact with the camera the entire MV and even in their live performances of the song, you will never see them look at the camera. This was done deliberately as well because they wanted to show how in their grief they were blind to everything that was going on around them and they were closed off to the world and didn't care what was happening outside of themselves even though the world was watching their every move.
The part where Key smashes the piano is only one example of of how SHINee shows how they felt for a while after Jonghyun died -- they were angry at everything, including music, and in a way they were blaming "music" and their careers for what happened, and in the MV they were taking their anger out on the piano, etc.
The plastic sheet and them flailing under water is supposed to represent how they felt suffocated in their grief and how grieving while in the public eye made them feel trapped at times, etc.
Every scene, every image, every movement in their dance, every look, every moment they stand still or look blankly, etc. is very deliberate and is there for a reason.
This comeback is part of a three part release celebrating SHINee's 10th anniversary. So they released 3 mini albums with 5 songs each in their The Story of Light trilogy and they had 3 comebacks each 2 weeks apart to showcase their lead track on each of their albums. "Good Evening" and "All Day All Night" were their comeback tracks from Episode 1, " I Want You" and "Who Waits for Love" were their comebacks from Episode 2 and Episode 3 was "Our Page" and "Tonight". Their comeback lasted 6 weeks to represent the fact that it was SHINee's 6th "full length" album. At the end of the six weeks they released a special final MV to celebrate their anniversary and all they have been through over the past 10 years with their song "Countless." "Countless" was an epilogue track that was added to their repackaged Story of Light album.
FYI: Make sure when you watch "Our Page" that you also pair the MV with the official lyric video. Every word of "Our Page" was wrote by the members and it's all about Jonghyun. If you know what the lyrics are about it will help you to understand the story being told in the MV. (It would be helpful to understand the lyrics first BEFORE watching the MV.)
Before this comeback SHINee had just come off their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) world tour and the members were doing solo activities as they worked on what was going to be an epic 10th anniversary comeback. With Jonghyun's passing, that set them back a few months because they were grieving. It also took time to figure out how they were supposed to function without Jonghyun. But SHINee never really stopped working. Two months after Jonghyun died, SHINee held their SHINee World -- The Best from Now On Concert in Japan and they pretty much were working nonstop until Onew, Key and Minho's enlistment. That concert had originally been planned as part of their 10th anniversary celebration and it had already been sold out. So SHINee felt obligated to honor their fans and continue the concert despite everything, which meant some extra work, because they already had been planning everything with Jonghyun. So they had to quickly go back to the drawing board and figure out how to do it with only 4 members and still honor Jonghyun's memory.
In SHINee's fan meeting/concert for their 10th anniversary the members all vowed that SHINee will always be 5 and that Jonghyun will always be involved in everything they do. I think we are always going to have reminders of him in all that SHINee does from now on, and that is the way it should be. He was loved and will never be forgotten, and when possible, should always be involved in things that have to do with SHINee. OT5 forever and ever.
I think we can feel Jonghyun's presence and influence in this album and songs because a lot of what made SHINee's sound uniquely SHINee (and this album is no exception) was because of Jonghyun. He not only shaped SHINee's sound because he was the main vocal of the group, but, as you know, he also wrote and composed around 40% of SHINee's songs, so he can be felt in everything they do. It wouldn't be SHINee if we didn't hear his influence shine through in their music, that is what makes SHINee's sound so unlike any other.
And, because of that, I think from now on we will always be searching for the hidden messages and moments that represent Jonghyun in everything SHINee does.

@@rjkpop I've been a Shawol since their debut and a Kpop fan since 2006. Over the years I have sort of taken a hyper interest in SM artists, so I am full of a lot of useful useless information. LOL I watch a lot of interviews and concert documentaries, etc. so I pay attention to the backstories and things that others may not know a lot about. And I like to spread my love of Kpop to others by giving them information that not everyone may know about an artist or group in the hopes of causing them to fall even more in love with that person or group as well. I have known most SM artists for so long that they have just started to feel like family.

The lyrics could be interpreted in whatever way you like, but for me the lyrics have always felt like they were talking about Jonghyun (since this is their first release as four).

This song always feels like a “what if” song for me. Like “what if we had known something was wrong and had come to see you” or “what if we had been there that day”. It feels like a song of survivor’s guilt. Like they are saying if they could do it over and get to the person in time, they wouldn’t be lonely, maybe that person was thinking of them, I’ll rush to get to you before the darkness comes. Like what if they could’ve made a difference. But obviously had to be lightened up a bit for general audiences and posterity. The video backs this up with the fox imagery (representing Jonghyun), the empty chair, and to me the paint spilling over their faces is like endless tears.

You've come so far in your SHINee journey already!! SHINee did not take much time away after Jonghyun passed away... they continued on with their scheduled concert in Japan merely 2 months after!! It was definitely not easy for them but Jonghyun's mom was the one who requested they continue on. This MV was released not even 6 months after his passing. The music was sampled from 112's song "Cupid". The part at the well when the members look down into it also has a shadow which I think represents Jonghyun. It is also theorized that the fox represents Jonghyun and the fox is featured in the album covers of The Story of Light series. Even with how soon this was released after Jonghyun's passing, SHINee still does not disappoint with how amazing the whole album series is. These men worked so hard through a really difficult time with the support of each other and their families and Shawols. With the live, this was performed in their comeback show this year and they wanted to go with a different image concept than the other live stages that they did 3 years ago by wearing the suits. Thanks for your reaction!

As far as I remember, their concert in Japan was already planned, and they wanted to cancel it, but then Jonghyun's mother intervened and asked them not to cancel the concert, but to hold it in his honor. I think it even helped them let go of the situation a little bit by sharing their grief with the fans, and the Shawols had the opportunity to say goodbye that way.

The live version you watched was from their first comeback special after Onew, Key and Minho was released from the military. And the fact that they were able to deliver that kind of performance after almost close to 2 years of not performing this song and choreo after all that time is everything that makes SHINee shine.

This is one of my favourite choreographies from them, it's by Koharu who also choreographed Taemin's Move, Criminal, Sayonara Hitori and Flame of Love. This entire album felt so healing, I think they really wanted to show that they were going to stick together and stay with us no matter what. It must have been so hard for them especially to do the concert just 2 months later but I'm so grateful that they shared those moments with us.
Key's spray painted hair is one of the best things ever, the buzz cut really suits him. Yes Fabulous is Minho's first leading role in a really long time, I'm excited! The Ringtone suits performance had such a different atmosphere. TSOL is really dear to my heart, it felt like a rock in a sea of chaos at the time, I'm so glad you've made it to this point! Fun fact, you may recognise the synth at 3:24 as the sound at the end of every SM mv now!

All of the Story of Light title songs, both the lyrics and imagery hold so much meaning, but they personally still feel like an old wound. No matter how much I adore these albums, to me, the TSOL comeback felt too soon, it was clear to me that they wanted to forget the pain through music and I am glad they had each other (and us) - this was visible in the interviews, the performances and everything, some shows were asking highly inappropiate questions about Jonghyun. I myself couldn't stomach it so soon, I bought the albums but couldn't listen to the songs so soon after everything. It still seems to me that the true healing came while they were in the army, away from the public eye and I'm really hoping Taemin is healing now as well. Thank you for this reaction ♡

  • @rtqpcrxn

I think this song, the MV, and the choreography can have many meanings and are all full of symbolism and metaphors. There's definitely a surface level where it is a sweet love song, but the way it is delivered doesn't have quite that feeling. There's a sense of longing in the lyrics of rushing to a loved one before the end of the day, which I think can be taken to mean many things.
The video always seems so complex to me and like I see new things in it every time I watch it. It definitely seems to evoke the complicated emotions of the SHINee members always being seen/being watched, and a certain separation between them and the viewers of the video while also being thrown into turmoil until finally running through the forest to the well where we can see a fifth person represented by the shadow inside.
Finally, the choreography seems to go through stages as well. It starts extremely reserved with an empty chair/space in the choreo and seems to get more and more frenetic throughout. Additionally, there isn't much interaction with the audience, instead the members are looking at and interacting with each other, leaning on each other and getting energy from each other.
The whole thing is so artful and so full of meaning at each step and I really cherish it. It was really the perfect way to come back at the time.

I really love the choreo for this song. Similar to the MV, it depicts the process of grief and of finding themselves again while enduring that process.
It starts with them sitting down with a pose almost of defeat, like their lives have just ground to a halt. When they get out of the chairs, their movements are uncoordinated and very free, almost like they are fighting alone through their own separate experiences and feelings. They don’t even look at each other during this part and are usually looking in completely opposite directions. Partway through the choreo they finally all come together and support each other, even physically leaning on each other at times. When they sit down again it is as a unit, connected together as they finally have managed to come rely on each other again to help them through their grief. When they stand up after this, they begin to dance more intensely, but they are looking at each other, reminding each other of what they are dancing for, even though their formation is clearly missing someone in the front of their half circle. There will always be a spot for Jonghyun though, in that open space, and they continue to dance for each other and for him. Then, finally, during their last most intense section, they face the audience, as though they have made it through the crucible of their worst grief. Finally they are able to face the world as SHINee again and perform their music for us once more.
This is my interpretation, though. I just love how understated it is as a choreo but how powerful it is at the same time.
    Thanks for the reaction!

The TSOL era is so bittersweet and I find that it still brings me back to that pain. I do, however, push myself through all those beautiful songs because that's what Jonghyun wanted for SHINee. Still can't get through Our Page by itself, though I do watch it when I watch their wonderful concert from the following February. Fun fact, if my memory serves - this was the song that opened up their Ringtone VLive this past February. They all looked phenomenal and sounded as perfect as usual. Since Minho had been discharged in mid-Nov 2020, they only had a few short weeks to put all this together for us.

This song always give me a rollercoaster of emotions .
Although the music is upbeat but the way they sang and the choreo at the beginning were so heartfelt and melancholic? , at least for me that's how I get. But the optimistic feel towards the end (symbolize with more energetic choreo) really made me happy and hopeful.
This was a Trilogy album, The Story of Light. On the 3rd album, there's a song with all of 5 of them , called Lock You Down. So I believe they already prepared for an album release before Jonghyun's passing.

jonghyun was my bias so I felt like this song was sort of the other four saying "we'll look after you let's do this together" sort of thing but maybe I'm just projecting haha? of course on a surface level the lyrics are about two lovers like you said but in context I personally always took the lyrics to mean sort of like "we'll bring all of us shinee + shawols together again" or like "we're coming for you/picking you up so we can be together again" after everyone sort of took a hiatus/was in deep grief. I remember listening to this song for the first time while audio streaming their 10th anniversary party and you could hear/feel shawols in the audience hold their breath while they were performing it, it was so emotionally charged and we were all so focused, so there will always be something sad about this song to me just because it is so linked to that time... sad but hopeful? like a "let's pick up the pieces together" sort of a thing?
or also it might be about shinee picking themselves up and finding each other to get together and perform together again as a group - you might notice in the live they purosefully don't make eye contact with the camera that's an intentional thing which sort of alludes to this performance being something personal and internal to them, for other people to watch and observe but not participate in almost? - also the standing up bit together after they sit on the chairs together with their arms around each other's shoulders
( I don't peronsally believe that the fox is meant to represent him I think it's a reference to the little prince and represents what the fox means in the little prince - it's about building relationships - but that's just my view)

Prior to Jjong's passing, SHINee schedules are fully booked for the next year including their concert overseas. It was Jonghyun's mom who told the members to not cancel whatever schedules they had and if Jjong was still alive he wouldn't want it to be cancelled, too. It was too early for this come back may be, but it really helped us (SHINee and Shawols) to move forward even though our heart still hurt. Thank God that these come back helped us heal.. until now I still can't bear to listen to Jonghyun's album without crying. It used to be my night lullaby, but now I listen no more coz I also want to move on without getting hurt and miss him. I don't know it's really hard to cope up until now maybe because I was used of seeing and hearing them as 5. Good thing Taemin entertained us well with the absence of the rest during military enlistment so I also thought that all 4 except for Taemin just took a break. Well, anyway... It really is about time to move on...

Wow I personally never interpreted the song as some kind of love song/young love but you are right that it fits.
When I listened to it back in 2018 (it was only 6 months after Jjong's passing) I always got a sad feeling about it. Even tho the song is upbeat it feels sad to me especially the way they sing it. And when I read the lyrics I immediately thought of Jjong too. "i'm coming to get you before it's too late, you will be surprised, before the darkness comes" etc. idk it always had such deep meaning to me personally. I never interpreted it as actual darkness = night but more as the darkness a person can feel, bad thoughts, depression and such. Maybe that's a bit too deep but that's just how I felt at the time. The way they performed the song too back then also always gave me a sad feeling, they seemed almost lost on stage, avoiding eye contact with the camera and so on.
Anyway let me stop rambling. I'm sure others will also tell you a bit about the choreography and the meaning so I won't even start there. Great reaction as always and I'm looking forward to the other 3 songs from this era. (Good Evening like I said was released 6 months after Jjong's passing, 'I Really Want You' 2 weeks later and 'Our Page' another 2 weeks later. 'Countless' was for the repackage album)

TSOL is one long love story to our Jonghyun. I know many can't listen to it and that's ok - I still haven't listened to over half of Poet|Artist, most of 1 And 1, and nearly all of OP 1 & 2. I'm just not ready.
But Good Evening...I love it. I adore TSOL. I love that SHINee refused to give the vultures their tragedy p*rn. Is it a happy song? No. It's filled with longing and melancholy and and most of all, love.
I don't know if you'll react to SW6 The Best From Now On, their Japanese concerts...after. If you do, I'm not sure I can watch it. I streamed the first and last and have watched half of it and I don't know if I. Am do so again. It was what we needed, but it's hard...very hard.
As always, fhank you for your reaction. Oh, and I highly recommend watching SHINee's back as your companion for TSOL. It's a balm for the soul. Especially ep 4.

Personally I do think that From Now On is okay to watch but I don't think anyone should react to it. Because during that time they were still grieving. From Now On is personal. I mainly feel like I'm watching something I shouldn't. It just was to soon for that specific song.
At the same time it also feels like a goodbye from him, kinda

Yay!! Thank you, you made my Friday evening. I love this song so much. I love the interaction and closeness of them in the choreo..and how comfortable and loving they are with each other. Key looks fabulous with short hair....and Minho in that suit..😍😍. The fox has a special symbolism. It's seen as a messenger from the spirit world. Shawols think of it as a symbol of Jonghyun (as is the moon), Four but always 5.
I hope you'll do some of Key's solos. There is
Our Page ..the song they wrote for Jonghyun..it's sad but beautiful and shows their way forward while keeping Jonghyun in their hearts always...you definitely need the lyrics for Our Page to do it justice and respect. Also there's From Now On...(I still cry when I watch the live version they did as a tribute to their brother playing his parts recorded.) I'm a bit cautious about reacts to this as it is so emotional and important to Shawols as well as SHINee. I think you would be able to do it with the right approach and respect though. The Story of Light was in 3 parts combined into The Story of Light, Epilogue. From Now On was the last song which Jonghyun recorded with Shinee. I got emotional just writing this..

TSOL is one of my favourite album. And as many people commented that you can interpret the lyrics in however you like. Most of KPOP songs are like that. For I Want You, i suggest you react the dance practice instead of live performance since most of their live performance is for music show & usually they will block the video

That fox in the MV represent Jonghyun. His favorite story was The little prince and it also symbolizes lovely soul or something like that

You said that making this MV was soon, since the tragedy happened one year ago... Well, I tell you that Jonghyun passed away in December 2017, and in February 2018 SHINee was already making a concert in Japan... call that "soon"! Poor guys!
