Here in 2023 I opted for A520 Vs B550 ITX Motherboard for my Small form factor build. Building into the Mini ITX case is very expensive and the A520 motherboards were way more cheaper than the B550 counterparts. It has everything I need.
Great video Tech. One of your best videos. Short, to the point & very informative. Great work. There is really not much else 99% of people need to know about this board.
Can't say I'm in the market for a mobo at the moment, but I still appreciate the informative video Tech. Never know when a friend or family member will decide that they need a new computer, so I like having this kind of knowledge just in case ;)
Hmm, I feel like a520 could’ve been a viable replacement for lower end b450 motherboards, but the lack of overclocking support is a deal breaker to me. I mean, a lot of people buying a lower end motherboard might be building an apu system, and overclocking the graphics can have a big impact in games.
Adiffkindofswag I would agree with you that overclocking the cpu is moot, but overclocking the igpu isn’t. You can often get 10-20% extra performance in games overclocking the igpu on the stock cooler. For high-end or even mid-range gpus, a 6 fps increase doesn’t mean a whole lot, but when it’s the difference between 26 fps and 32, that’s when the difference matters. When the a520 ds3h costs $75, and the b450 ds3h costs $72, why would you get the a520?
Just picked up one of this A520 ITX mobo with Ryzen 4650G Pro for an APU build. Great budget chipset if you don't plan to overclock the CPU and don't require the PCIe 4.0 storage support. You can still overclock the ram though.
B550 seems to be worth the money due to USB connections and gen 4 PCI for GPU. I am not sure how useful that will be, but it might be due to high bandwidth that might be needed for rtx 3080/90 and for RDNA2 cards.
I think those should be reviewed, B450 and A320 are still out there, but availability could start decreasing when A520 launches, also, I think the average consumer / gamer will say "This are new a520 motherboards, should I buy one? Or should I get a 2 year old B450, or heck, even a used X470? Or save up more and get a B550, are the extra features worth it? IMHO that would make for a really interesting and informative video, the way you explain things makes it super easy to understand and make educated buying decisions
Finally off work! What an amazing change of pace :) so relaxing and informative. Can we all just agree he has a soothing voice? BTW that thumbnail is 🔥🔥
They aren't bad with a 3600X or 3300X either (unless you need PCIe 4.0, of course), because those CPUs are very efficient and don't have a huge amount of overclocking headroom anyway.
I've seen quite a few videos with people pairing an A320 with a R5 3600 with zero adverse effects on CPU performance. So is it fair to assume that its safe to pair a A520 with a 4600 if we aren't OCing?
It depends on the VRMs and the cooling solution for them. The chipset itself won't make the CPU run faster or slower, it's just that higher end chipsets typically come with better VRM solutions. So just do a tad bit of research before puling the trigger to make sure the chip you want to run won't be held back because the VRM is thermal throttling. Ex. in this video the b550 board looks to have the same VRMs, but it has a heatsink, so it will be able to deliver more power longer.
I only got it, because I needed a micro ATX board in a hurry after my previous MSI B450 board gave up on me and for the life of me I couldn't find a good deal for a micro atx 550! I have it combo-d with an Ryzen 3 3600 and 16GB Corsair + GTX 1660ti that I migrated from the B450. I cant really complain! Seriously, I don't overclock and I got 2 SSD drives connected (1 120GB +1TB SSD) and I have to say, it's the most stable AMD boards I have ever used. I'm a Gigabyte fan when it comes to motherboards, so it was a nice change from MSI, but that is beside the point. Here is the deal: If you don't overclock ; if you have a budget or mid graphics card ; if you aren't a hard core gamer who needs all fps accounted for; This is it. I was just playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and easily hitting 45-50 fps on custom (mix of mid+ultra+high) settings on 1440p.
A520 on a lowend have a lot sense, you still have RyzenMaster overclocking and you still can buy separate heatsink. Also you can run older gens on B550, it's unofficial but you can use it, probably with A520 it also will be a case. Sooo 1600AF on A520 or 1700 on B550, 3400G on A520 is a great deal for a lot of gamers.
No OC support means almost nothing with post 2xxx Ryzen, so unless one needs PCIe 4.0 (and most of us do not), an A520 board will be a good choice if every dollar counts right now. OTOH, a $20 difference between A520 and a B550 is two or three fast food lunches. It is a shame the 3xxx IGPUs won't run on A520; that would have been a really solid budget pairing.
I've been overclocking my parts since 2012. I cannot imagine going back and giving up that freedom. I'm running 3800mhz ram on b450 for crying out loud.
For R3 yeah the a520's if you can get em cheap enough are fine, for a R5 or R7 no need to bother with a B550 when you can get a B450 Tomahawk Max for $90, go check out Hardware unboxed testing an OC r9 3950x the Tom Max is better than ALL b550 boards under $140 except for the MSI b550 Mortar M, which is just under $140 @ $137 there are a few better b550 Boards but all cost over $170 US and at that price point there are several Budget X570 boards that are better Oh and even sweeter is the fact that the B450 Tomahawk Max WILL support Ryzen 4000 and Pcie 4.0
wow they look SOOOO much better then the A320 boards lol idk if the looks are worth the extra cost though. Apart of the reason why someone considered the A320s was that the price of those boards were normally around 50$ compared to my Asrock 450 board at the time was more like 85$. The A520s would be a much better sell for me if the price even of the more capable boards was no more then 60$

Hey Tech, i'm really looking into building my first PC. I need it to be good for 1440p gaming in 60+ fps on High or some Ultra detail and upgradable for 5+ years. Any chance build videos are coming any time soon?
If you are planning an APU build with a Ryzen 4350G, 4650G or 4750G, it makes sense to go with A520, since you won't be needing the PCIe 4.0 GPU slot and you cut a bit of cost. Only thing you lose will the PCIe 4.0 storage support and CPU over-clocking.
@@josejuanandrade4439 It really depends, the capability to OC doesn't always means it OC's well, the 3300X for instance simply doesn't scale with voltage. As these boards still allow for memory overclocking, they're a decent candidate for a 3300X build, especially if you can't afford to cut any other corners.
I am at a loss as to what the hell to do now. I have two 2700's. Two MSI boards 450,470. Do I keep the 450 and pair it with the 2700x and dump the 470 with the stock 2700 or hold onto them. The 470 can't be updated less it be a permanent update to run 3000 series. While the B450 max can be updated and still retain it older bios for older Ryzen Generations. Or Buy a new 570 and get a lower cost 3900x or pop for the much more expensive 3000 series CPU when it drops.... choices choices choicees.... bain overload.
I consider myself frugal when it comes to buying PC parts, hence I am still running a FX-8320 and a GTX680 GPU. I for one would rather spend the $20 and get a B550 board as long as it had 2 x nvme slots.
haha i guess i dont understand your sense of frugality, my frugal is only having windows on the m.2, my most demanding games on sata6gb 500gb ssd, and everything else on a good old Seagate 4tb spinny disc. i bought the cheapest z490 (asrock phantom 4, 130 dollars on sale) i could get for my 10600K (actually an unlocked Engineering Sample, i paid 140, nothing is disabled), and shoved it in the same case ive been using since my Core2Duo. it has a homemade plexiglas side and i fitted an extra 120mm fan where the dvd drives used to go by using a old psu casing half as a grille and self tapping screws to attach it to the drive mounts. it even still has the original Pentium Dual Core decal that was on it when i bought it, used, lol. and i still have an RX480 8gb, that will have to wait for another tax return for an upgrade. im hoping that amd replaces the 5600 with something with at least 8gb vram. the 5500 is a sidegrade, 5700 is too expensive and i dont need it, and no way in hell am i buying a card with only 6gb vram in 2020.

For your kind info b550 has PCI-E Gen 4 support out of the box..
Got an Gigabyte A520M S2H for testing. Can OC an 3600 to 4.4Ghz stable with it and that for 60 euro's. Not bad.
@@eclipsegst9419 The point was even I would not buy a B520 motherboard when you could get a better board for $20 more.
@@Anlushac11 haha ya that i agree with, i just meant i coulnt ever imagine affording to put all my stuff on m.2
