maybe you shouldn't bike commute...

  • There's a hard-core group of bike commuters who look down on anyone not riding their bike for whatever reason. Don't feel under pressure to ride. Some circumstances in life may prevent you from cycling to work.

Really enjoyed this thank-you. I'm 71 and am semi-retired and work from home in any case but I used to commute to work for decades and this really rang bells for me. I'll just note some reactions below:
--My commuting now is on an ebike as my knees can't handle hills but I will do on average 20-40 kms a day shopping at various stores and places I need to get to. I have a large dutch-style cruiser bike with cargo racks front and rear.
--That said, I am in what has been rated as one of the best bike-friendly cities "According to the Copenhagenize Index, a ranking that calls itself “the most comprehensive and holistic ranking of bicycle-friendly cities on planet earth,” Montreal is the 18th best biking city in the world." And with that I am spoiled. After decades feeling like second or third-rate traffic on the road things have changed. A poor route for me, now, means a route in which I am actually mixing it up with cars on the same road, at all. I avoid this now like the plague... but because I am able to.
--We are in the midst of a major shift in mentality--motorized vehicles versus pedal or ebikes--and along with this shift comes a shift in municipality focuses upon safe bikeways and even financial bonuses for ditching your car in favour of a green mode of transport. Better for everyone. Also, with ebikes, older people can now get out as well and feel safe.
So in summation, I can relate entirely to your points in your video but to me this comes from the past, and the future should more and more present riders with safe choices to commute or shop, or recreational ride... without having to mix it up with dangerous car traffic.
    Cheers from Montreal!
    DR

I've been stressing myself out lately because I've been motivated to commute by bike. It would be 1 1/2 hours, hilly and a 45 to 50 mph windy roads with no shoulder. Also I have to pick up my kids from daycare. With a lot of considerations and compromises i think I'll drive my car to a safe spot so I can avoid the dangerous areas and bike 30 min one way. I'd love to not drive at all but it's just not an option where I live. I'll still save on gas and some wear and tear. It will be better for the environment than not doing it and I would be able to do that daily more likely than the full ride. Also I have to pick my kids up at daycare anyways so I'll pass the day care on the way back. Watching this video was helpful..... thank you.

It sounds like you’re in a less than ideal situation for riding to work all the way on a regular basis, but your ideas can work. Test what works for you, and try different variations. Don’t stress yourself. It should be something for your benefit and not your detriment.

the problem is because of the usage of the term. a bike commuter is vague. it just means someone who use bikes to commute. its not specific in determining if that person is a pure bike commuter or an occasional bike commuter. its kinda like saying, i'm a basketball player. most people will think, "oh he's a basketball player? does he play for a team? is he in the NBA?". people will always assume this. context matters. someone who plays basketball on the weekend at the park is also a "basketball player". thats why people add "professional" in the beginning to specify that that person is a professional basketball player. what matters the most is getting out there and pedaling. it doesn't matter how much you do it, it's just about getting out there and enjoying it. if you find that commuting by bike or riding bikes recreationally is not for you then thats that.

Bike commuting is probably fine for people whose job should be remote work anyway. It is significantly harder to carry your tools, musical equipment, multiple outfits (for acting for example), ladders etc to your work every day. It would probably ruin most peoples day to cycle in Vancouver in the rainy cold dark winter anyway, which is why I escape to a walkable city in Mexico every winter.

I have be dressed to be presentable at work. Its somewhat difficult to cycle without ruining my pants, chinos or dress shoes, loafers etc. Especially so when its rainy or snowy with rude drivers splashing muds all over. I have managed to cycle 2-3 times of the week with dressy sneakers, and waiting for sunny days. I think better and safer cycling infrastructure could solve most of the issues.

eBike helps with the sweat in most cases. But dust and spray is a different issue. Sometimes it is fine to commute by car or even better, take public transit.

That’s not really feasible for most people. Here in the states it’s hard to move your kids out of schools, hard to find good jobs with retirement options, and most of the time it’s too expensive to live near the city center. So your flippant remark isn’t helpful at all
