2001年9月16日、アルジャジーラ上でビンラディンによるビデオ声明が放送された。声明の中でビンラディンは、「私は攻撃を実行していないと強調する。攻撃は別の個人によって、彼自身の動機に基づいて実行されたように見える」と述べた。2001年11月、アメリカ軍はアフガニスタン東部のジャラーラーバードで1本のビデオテープを回収した。このテープにはビンラディンと他のアルカイダ構成員との会話が記録されており、その中でビンラディンは同時多発テロを事前に知っていたことを認めていた
