  • Describes the easily overlooked but important step of aligning the balance shafts when installing the timing belt.
The cause of strange engine vibrations - shaking the car while driving and idling, rear view mirrors vibrating - may be due to improper alignment of the balance shafts when a timing belt is replaced.

that oil pump pulley you were aligning at the end has 3 rotations one of them fits the whole screwdriver while the others feel block. an easier way would be to line it up then if it don't fit do one whole rotation and check again if not do it one more time and it should fit in. its just 1 of 3 rotstions.

My timing belt broke. I was told this is a zero clearance engine in my '97 Accord 2.2
So first I would have to find out how to know if it was damaged when it broke. I heard the piston can hit the valve or something. And if not how to replace the front main seal because it dumped all my oil at the same time and then how to line this up to put a new belt on. The car's got 380,000 mi on it I'm thinking of taking the $250 scrap offer

@@coolhluke8089 first of all your car is worth way more parted out than that, and disassembly is rather easy so definitely don't accept $250 for your entire car as scrap. Second, the timing belt for this vehicle is around $12 just for the belt by itself. It would be worth it to replace the timing belt yourself and then run a compression tester. If your compression is within range for each cylinder then you're golden. If not, then it's a simple matter of removing the head and sending it to a local machine shop who will charge you a nominal fee for labor and parts. Seems like a bigger hassle than it really is, and you could be back up and running in just a matter of days even via the machine shop route.

Right on. I learned the hard way the first time not knowing the suttle difference between what seemed right and what is actually right. You'll know because you won't see out of your mirrors they will shake so badly from the out of balance engine. And uninstalling, reinstalling and doing that job over again is no fun.

    i have two accords, 91 and 93.
    both are different.
    the 2.2 engine.
the 93 has a DOT on the gear that align up at 12 o'ciock position with the idle gear align up with its notch at 12 o’clock or notch on cover too..
the 91 has the dot align on the right side at about 5 o’clock position.

I just had timing belt replacement completed on my accord. I believe the balance shaft may not be timed properly. I get a vibration around 2500 rpm. It wasn't there before the service. It's not shaking or anything severe, but theres a noticible vibration. At highway speeds everything in the car buzzes from the vibration/hum. Would the lower shaft being not timed cause a vibration, or a severe shake?

    Hello Friend.
I'm in Brazil and I have a Honda Accord 95 when I disassembled my engine I noticed that the balancing shafts and their bushings are very worn, do you know what is possible to do?
    Sorry I'm using google translator.

How do I replace the left balance shaft? Previous repair done by unknown person damage the end of the shaft. The balancer belt along with the corresponding was missing when I removed the cover as it was broken. I just picked up the car. It runs but with a mild valve tick and vibrations

The easiest way is to remove the oil pump, stuck the hole behind it and align the marking, coz there are gear inside that balance shaft/ oil pump not in a correct installation...done.
