JFTR: The problem with PCIe isn't in the diagnostic card, but the mainboard and the technology itself. The basic principle is that the BIOS writes these codes to the I/O port 0x80. In the days of yore, with ISA or PCI, the card could just sniff the bus and display the code it captured by doing so. PCIe is way more complex, and not really a bus anymore but a switched connection. Some boards don't even bother writing the post code to 0x80 anymore. Most still do, but it's tricky to get to it.
However, even the most modern boards sometimes still have an LPC header available (which is a kinda-sorta variant of the old ISA bus). They use it to connect TPMs, and stuff like that. But you might be able to get the post codes from there as well. Might have to build an adapter, though. Even if there's no TPM header, in theory, you could still hook on directly to the legs of the SuperIO chip (where the LPC bus is).

Regarding the boot problem of the first PC, you should try to tweak the SATA configuration in the BIOS (ie AHCI vs RAID vs IDE emulation if present).

    • @granpawa

@@LarixusSnydes I've done this a hundred (if not a thousand) times. Never made things worse, and it often made the OS load fine. SATA controller Raid mode does no always involve a second drive. Furthermore, a RAID drive has to have special markers identifying it as such.

I recently had to fix a PC with an intermittent fault, I hate those, you test them and find nothing, take it back to the customer and a couple of days later it's gone again.
Anyway, first thing I did (and always do) was to make a disk image. It failed because the disk had errors so I corrected those and made an image. Expecting I had now fixed the problem I booted up and it seemed fine. Got interrupted by the phone, came back to shut the PC down and it had frozen. Rebooted and the same happened again. Third time, wouldn't boot properly. Customer complaint confirmed!
Memory test time, it hung up during memtest8. Took 3 of 4 memory sticks out, same result. Seemed strange though, the memory sticks were labelled 4x4GB, so that's 16GB per stick and 64GB total but the bios is only reporting 4GB on 1 stick. Is it a memory controller (CPU) or motherbaord fault? Ok, I'll worry about that later. Replaced the memory with a known good, bios is reporting correctly, but same fault with memtest86. However I noticed that each time if failed the display was corrupted. Replaced the graphics card with a known good. Memtest86 passes, and also passes with the original memory. Fortunately the graphics card was one which used the same drivers as the original so I tried Windows. Seemed good. Left it running for 16 hours, still good. While it's running I checked the part number on the memory sticks. Yes, as the label says it is 4x4GB. As a set! So 16GB total on 4 sticks not 16GB per stick as the label would have you believe. Bad labelling like this sends you on a wild good chase.
Tried to run event viewer to try to confirm the original faults - not found! Ok, time to check windows integrity. Lots of things missing! The customer had said he wouldn't mind if I had to upgrade windows (from 7 to 10). So in place upgrade it was, everything went through ok except graphics card drivers. Ok, need to find Win10 drivers for these cards, and guess what: Nvidia decided that a professional grade graphics card with drivers which worked up to Win8.1 was not worthy of updated drivers even though the *same family of graphics cards* made just 1 year later has Win10 drivers! That reminded me why I stopped installing Nvidia cards!
I'd been looking on eBay for a replacement card and had found one for about £20 inc shipping, but while looking I had also found a later card of the same family with higher performance and more memory for £15 with free shipping. Did this one have Win10 drivers? Yes! Bought it, installed it, everything good, customer happy.
I suspect the actual fault may have been bad contacts on the graphics card, but the OS needed to be upgraded to fix the errors so would have needed to be replaced anyway. The alternative of trying to fix the errors on the Win7 OS would have taken much longer and cost far more than the cost of the upgraded card.

Love your videos Richard but can i ask why you left the power in the HDD but removed the SATA as this could (not would) cause issues with it powering up and being interrupted so frequently. Perhaps remove the power not the sata as this has the same effect just as a precaution.

Really should remove both connections. With IDE drives having the data cable but not the power plugged in can cause freezes in BIOS.

I don't mind the mistake Richard made, after all, Dutch, German, English and the Scandinavian languages all belong to the German languages group. Dutch is spoken by relatively few people, even if you include Flemish and South African. Cheers from Hilversum (incidentally also on Linux).

another note the grapics card that was in the pc originally was not even close to be the same as your replacement..... that is a real big downgrade.... you should of asked the customer with what card he / she wants it to replace with !!! then order and charge for that new card...
to be honest if you did that to a pc i brought in to you for repair you would have a angry customer...

Not really, if they are just looking to get it running again. I'm sure they are not gaming on such an old machine, so as long as the replacement card has the monitor output type they require I'm sure they will be happy enough for a cheap fix. And I'm sure Richard would have communicated with them, could always pay extra for a different GPU if they wanted to, but I doubt it in this case.
