Amnesiac isn't the b-sides for Kid A it's just the songs that didn't fit on it. Radiohead has more great b-sides/non-album tracks than most bands have on their albums, Thom is very selective when it comes to what tracks are on the album and where, the upshot is how many great tunes they have that aren't on any albums. They easily could've cut at least 3 full albums with all those tracks, but it's more fun finding out about them as you listen to them and the best way to go about that is to start with The Bends b-sides and just go in order.
You should listen to Charles Mingus, jazz genius, which influenced Radiohead heavily. This is evidenced in The National Anthem, which you mentioned that you weren't necessarily a huge fan of. It might give some context as to the sound.
