Man, you are a listening machine. Keep it up and I'll keep watching🎉
So 2 + 2 = 5 is from George Orwell's novel, 1984 in which the authoritarian government has such total control. They could even change math or 2 and 2 = 5.
The words on the album artwork are from around LA billboards when they were recording this album.
I want to say they recorded this album in like a week or two much faster than previous albums that take like 6 months. Thus, it's a little more lively but made me not quite as refined

@frstlstn yeah, recorded super fast but they usually practice their songs a lot and try them out on live tours.
Unlike a lot of bands that really only sound good in the studio. They also sounds great live. Even the electronic instruments are played in real time. Or they have to adapt electronic drums for live drums. They brought in a second drummer when they performed the King of limbs album live

2+2= 5 is such a good title. It's about learning the wrong thing. And believe in that.
a lot of that song was inspired by the book Animal Farm by George Orwell

    • @elfboy29
      @elfboy29 17 дней назад

No it was 1984.The government showing you 4 fingers and making you believe there are five. Making you that impessionable - through torture. Breaking you until you cannot trust your own thoughts. Not just to beat you, but you make you believe. To own you. A boot, stamping on a human face for eternity. Cheery stuff. Happy New Year!

For some context on Sail to the Moon, Thom's son is named Noah. The whole song is about him. I always took the "I sucked the moon, I spoke too soon" to mean that he might have been unexpected. And this was a song where Thom was nervous about being a father, so he was saying "maybe I accidentally made the one who will save us." Noah is grown up now and a great artist in his own right. He has some songs you can listen to on RUclips.

Part of the promo for this album (that was recorded in LA/Hollywood) was that all over town before the album came out there were flyers that just said "Are you hungry? Are you fresh? Are you dying for a break?" and it had those slips at the bottom with a phone number. And if you called, you could press from a few choices and it would play you a piece of a random song from the album. That song is about the vultures in Hollywood who consume young people wanting to be famous, "sucking young blood" in exchange for stardom. It's dark, but it's also beautiful. Ironically, it's one of the songs that Thom cut from his later revised track list of the record. In hindsight, it probably should've been a b-side, along with Backdrifts, I Will, and Punch Up at a Wedding.

This was the first Radiohead album I bought right when it was released. 2003 I was a Sophomore in HS, and a confused, lonely, lost, emotional kid. I'd spent the previous year discovering all of their previous albums.
The day this album came out I biked to my local mall, picked up a fresh copy at Sam Goody, put it in my Discman with G-Shock protection, and started biking home listening to it. The first two songs were fun to bike to, and then I got to Sail to the Moon while I was riding through a local park. I literally just rolled off my bike onto my back in the grass and stared up at the clouds while listening to it. It was one of those moments I'll never forget.

I saw Thom Yorke in a grocery store in LA today. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?" I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw Thom trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Also for some more context, Thom was not happy with this record. And a few years later posted a revised track list that cut 4 songs from the record. If you look up the Hail to the Thief Thom's version playlist on spotify you'll see the cuts and the different track order. I think if they had released that album in that form, it would be on the list of one of their greatest.

2+2=5 is a reference to the book 1984. much of this album (including the title) was a reference to the george bush presidential administration in the 2000s, and the aftermath of 9/11 and the iraq war, as well as the birth of thom’s son, noah. there’s a lot of references to nursery rhymes and fairy tales because of that

The claps on We Want Young Blood are a direct reference to Freedom by Charles Mingus, which is well worth a listen if you don’t already know it (this was my introduction into that whole area of Jazz way back when).
The song is about the exploitation of young musicians in the music industry- sung from the point of view of record label execs and agents constantly looking for young blood to replace the burnt out old artists. Goes to the wider commentary on consumerism on the (very heavily political) album.

The corruption behind the governments and the rich people of the world just taking, never solving. False promises. So a lot of these songs are almost from the point of view of these despicable people. Many of the songs they write have many of these themes. ❤❤
