This is a really special RH album to me, it came out my last year of high school. And it was the first time I saw them live, I won pit tickets on the radio which was insane. It ruined every other concert for me lol. Seeing them that close, costs like a thousand dollars now.

Great reaction! Though Hail To Thief isn't on the very top of my Radiohead-ranking, I agree that it's absolutely breathtaking concerning the range of musical ideas, sounds and styles. It was fun watching someone so enthusiastic about it and experience the album again through your eyes.
Probably you were already told this by now, but after A Moon Shaped Pool, you absolutely have to react to "A Light For Attracting Attention" by The Smile, the new(ish) band project of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner.
The album came out last year and is, once again, a masterpiece imho. Especially with you loving Hail To The Thief so much, I can really see you digging that album as well.

You should react tp their legendary basement session as a bonus there are no copyright issues, to me Radiohead are my gererations Beatles and deserve all the accolades they earned. I would not mind at all if he watched the basement session for TKOL it is light years better than the studio version.

    • @kurrutako89
      @kurrutako89 Год назад +2

@@jameshannagan4256 nah it's not better than TKOL it's just different. TKOL is massively underrated, it took me years to actually like it because it's quite different and way less 'accessible' than their previous stuff, all the 'will they actually release TKOL pt 2 by surprise' stuff hurt it too I think, as people thought of it as unfinished. But the way I see it TKOL is very good, in fact side two is incredibly solid, like... Codex? Give up the Ghost? Separator? Those are all amazing.

This was my favorite RH album until In Rainbows came out. Underrated for sure. I loved watching your surprise and excitement with each unexpected element.. After the rest of the RH albums and Thom’s solo works you should check out The Smile which is Thom, Jonny Greenwood, Tom Skinner (from Sons of Kemet) and producer Nigel Godrich. It’s less experimental but still super interesting.

I really enjoyed your reaction, and I'm glad you were able to re-upload it even if it's an edited down version. I left a comment on the original leaving some suggestions. Here's that part of the comment in case you still need it.
    Slint - Spiderland (1991)
This album has relatively simple instrumentation, but it has really complex and intricate song structures, as well as super unique vocals and lyrics. It's also one of the earliest albums of the post-rock sub-genre.
Black Country, New Road - For the first time (2021)
This album came out 30 years after Spiderland, and it takes a lot of inspiration from that album. It has more varied instrumentation with jazz elements being added to the mix. If you enjoy this album, then I would definitely recommend listening to their next album 'Ants From Up There'. It's even better than their debut in my opinion, and it's currently my favorite album of the 20s.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (1991)
This is basically the 'Nevermind' of the Shoegaze sub-genre. It takes the song structures of grunge songs and adds a lot of heavy ambience and distortion that make it a very trippy and psychedelic experience.
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition (2016)
A very dark experimental hip-hop album with some super psychedelic production and some of the most insane sampling for an album I've ever heard. Danny Brown also has one of the most unique sounding voices in hip-hop right now.
    The Microphones - The Glow Pt.2 (2001)
This is an incredibly emotional lo-fi, indie-folk album with an insane amount of creative instrumentals, and super raw and unfiltered production.
Swans - To Be Kind (2014)
The two hour run time of this album is definitely intimidating, but it goes by very quickly once you get into it. This album has some insanely long songs (the longest being 34 minutes), and these songs probably have the most intense instrumental climaxes I've ever heard. I'd honestly say it's the most impressive album I've ever heard.
Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind (1996)
Compared to 'To Be Kind' this album is much more ambient and psychedelic, and it's even longer. The length of the album and 26 song track list allows it cover a lot of different grounds sonically. The album uses a lot of loops and samples that give it that 'sound collage' feeling you described. It's also much darker than 'To Be Kind' in terms of themes and tone.
Xiu Xiu - Girl With Basket of Fruit (2019)
I'm not going to really say much about the album here. It's one of my favorite albums, and the surprise of it is a big part of that.

Radiohead are one of the few artist's whose music really progresses from album to album. In Rainbows and Moon Shaped Pool are brilliant albums, TKOL is the bridge between them and is more experimental. None of them would exist without the one before. Each one progresses their sound, some more experimental than others in sound. What is even more impressive is you listen to their songs and sometimes you've not got a clue how it can be played live, then you see them live and are blown away. Best band I've ever seen live.

You aren't kidding about the pogression from one album to the next. Kid A blew everyone's socks off when it came out. Pablo was just a solid rock album, The Bends and OK Computer got a little creative but were still pretty easy to digest. Then they went waaaaaay off the beaten path and haven't looked back

Yes! "You probably have to like a lot of other music that is very different than Radiohead, to like Radiohead." Which is why i propose Radiohead is a genre itself (with that connotation) and The Smile is a great band in that genre. But hell yeah, Radiohead demands and creates that open mind.

Yeah Pablo Honey was pretty underwhelming to me on a first listen, although I did like it more on a couple other listens, and The Bends has some stuff that was mind-blowingly cool like Just and My Iron Lung (for similar reasons to why I love Paranoid Android) and some stuff that hasn’t aged as well because it feels very 90s and similar to stuff that Coldplay did afterwards. I do like The Bends quite a bit overall as an album though. But OK Computer and everything after has been masterful and way more out of the box so far!!

Eric thanks for the reaction. This is my very favorite Radiohead album, most days. I avoided Kid A and Amnesiac for a few years because of the electronic sound change, but this one kept all the sounds and genres so compartmentalized, that it was like an introduction to Radiohead electronica to Radiohead modern rock fans. I think this is what I needed pre- Kid A and Amnesiac, because they were such a hard left turn from the band's previous sound. Just the randomness of guitar rock and electronic keyboards completely seperated from track to track, them incorperated on others, and the cover art that suggests the seperation and compartmentalization of guitar rock and electronica. I really enjoy every track on this cd from beginning toend. I'm surprised by the trasin of thought by some fans that this cd is way too long, and some tracks are boring. That shocks me because this cd brought me back to Radiohead after a few years of avoiding them. I love this cd b/c it gave me a deeper understanding of Radiohead's musical message. Thanks.

Radiohead use micro tones to add extra layers and every Radiohead track has its own personality.
Thom Yorke is ranked in the top 100 best vocalist of all time. Each band member is highly skilled, although they've had disagreements about arrangements and musical direction, causing some albums to take a year longer to produce!
