  • I finally listened to Radiohead's album "In Rainbows" for the first time! I spent quite a few hours editing the songs down so that this couldn't be considered a replacement for listening to the full original songs (which I've linked below)! Also I edited them so that the songs would continue to flow on beat, which made it take way longer haha. My goal of sharing this video is to show my reactions to songs and discuss music theory, composition, mixing, and overall creativity and art. Throughout most of this video I'm talking about the music and giving my commentary on it, rather than the focus being solely on the music.

Radiohead has become one of my favorite bands over the past year! After listening to their albums in order starting with Pablo Honey, The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac over the past year, I was waiting for nearly a year for the right moment to take the next step forward in their discography and also record my first reaction to a Radiohead album, starting with Hail to the Thief and was so glad to have been able to record my reaction to it! You can watch that video here:
A bit about me- I've been making a living as a caricature artist for the past 16 years. I also love doing voice impressions, doing song covers, and making original music, including a full album about the life of caricature artists (find it in my playlists!). Music has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, and my taste has expanded to nearly all genres over the years, including classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, punk, metal, and alternative rock, electronic music, rap, hip hop, jazz, classical, 80s music, Disney songs (where it all began for me), and more.

So, it seems like most people would be happy to see “In Rainbows: From the Basement” next as a reaction! Awesome, thank you for the recommendations 🌞
Does anyone know if there is the same copyright to deal with for that, or might it be possible to just show the full songs without splicing them up? I’d of course still be adding commentary after each track. And is there one long video to watch or a playlist of vids? A link or links would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I love TKOL. After Radiohead finished In Rainbows, they said it almost broke up the band and they would never record an album in that manner again. I think that’s good context to TKOL, and also why I think TKOL songs are almost all better live. The record was never intended to be a record. They were messing around in Nigel’s (Godrich) studio trying to find inspiration. And pow, a full length record. So when they went on tour, they refined the songs and turned them on their heads. The basement session is a good example of this. There are probably other example videos. When I saw them live on TKOL tour, little by little went so hard. It was same energy level as Jigsaw

This album, and more specifically randomly seeing "In Rainbows: From the Basement" w/o even knowing the album existed - that show is so special, words don't do it justice. To me, out of so many 'great' moments in the band history, the 'In Rainbows: From the Basement' is the most legendary moment in the story of the band. It brought me back to my favorite band who I'd abandoned after "Ok Computer" catapaulted them as the best there is on the planet. "Kid A" threw me off, I went into a Blues music multi-year dive - but then I saw that show, I was so mesmerized, taken aback at how great the songs were, first listen, and the show brings you a level of connection with the band better than any other way. I'd suggest watching that as the next step into where to go with this journey. Funny you should say beach record - after the show blew my mind, bought the CD for a road trip and week in Key West and just kept playing it and playing it. To me, it is the album where they returned to 5 piece, parts (with some individual exceptions - the 5 guys went back to being a 3 guitar band, with drum and bass and various players for the synth and keys and a million instruments Jonny Greenwood (nominated for 2 Best Movie Orchestral Score Academy Awards - no a bad trait to have for your lead guitarist) uses - seeing them pull off the soundscapes you just heard live, no tricks, - too great. But this album is them just hitting their form and writing some of their best tunes, in this post electronic period for them, and by far I consider the best album to give to someone to check out the band. "OK Computer" remain my favorite album, and "Kid A" their 'Dark Side of the Moon' a true piece of art as music, and "In Rainbows" is this absolutely luscious but wicked and layered and simple yet as deep as the ocean as far as the music and crafting. This is where they come together and create something as near to flawless as should ever be used in this type of context. For whatever my recommendation is worth, check out Disc 2 after From the Basement, then remember the Basement show as it is crucial to the next album, King of Limbs, which I'd go to and then be prepared to do the Basement session for that. After that there are some cool ways to go to explore a but before doing the 9th album. I'm going to see Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood make incredible music with there side band "The Smile" on July 5 - Gen Admission - getting early and getting right up front - so I fully believe there will be a 10th album, LP10, though it may be a couple of years and it may be the last, they all keep making and will continue to produce wonderful music. But this right here, what you just listened to is a gift, it's like saying, we can do basically anything, and this time we presented you this glorious music album to enjoy forever. So however that ranks it, that fact remains true. It is really as good as it gets. Props for maintaining an engaging commentary off the cuff for 1.5 hours - well done very cool //

@@ericgoodwinart Yeah man, thanks for the time and effort to create that video. Radiohead's B-Sides (though In Rainbows Disc 2 stands apart a bit as more 'official' than the other B-Sides released) are an entire new ocean of music - to me, after the culmination of hearing the last album, it'd be great to have so much more yet to look forward. The B-Sides for "The Bends" are really phenomenal - for 'Ok Computer' they are so good (and this is just an indication of what level these guys operate at) called "Airbag/How Am I Driving" was nominated for the Grammy for best Alt/Rock album - a B-Side compilation even got a Grammy nod. The Kid A/Amnesiac era has both the live album, that might be cool to check out in between "King of Limbs" and "Moon Shaped Pool" and the B-Sides are all from 'Amnesic' as those 2 albums are the same sessions, and yet again, awesome. HTTT more gems - King of Limbs, not exactly B-Sides, but 2 songs on a single 'The Daily Mail' which are unofficially part of the album - but a few singles sprinkled around it without a major B-Side album, though a full DJ Electronica remix album, so plenty of content. In any case, all of that is to say, IMO that would be a heck of a thing to look forward to once you've heard all of the current albums. But I stress one last time - "From the Basement" is a master key, for both this past album and the next, will change the way you hear and view the band in all positive ways. I remember I wore out the cassette of that Airbag single and extra tracks in my 96' Dodge Avenger, driving around the mountains of SW Virginia in college, indulging in mother earth, so to speak, dying for the next album to come. Then as well, there is new material on updated albums (like 3 songs on the 20th Anniversary edition of OK Computer and some more on Kid Amnesiac released in 2021) along with never released treasures, well known to over the top fans like me, from concerts - a couple that are as beautiful as anything they ever released. So the world is expansive. Great video once again, thanks for the work it must take. Peace//

what you mentioned on "off-beat" on videotape is due to the song having hidden syncopation all over it. they usually have to start several times at live concert because people clap on the wrong beat and each instrument starts in a different time, so it messes everything if they don't catch from the beggining.

I found this theory on Genius which I thought was actually genius: It’s worth mentioning that as soon as Yorke sings the first "on videotape", the drums immediately start going "out of control". The sound produced is similar to that of a tape reel doing likewise. The words repeat in rhythm with the drums because the tape is stuck on a loop.
