Rehtse 7 you’re right. And it’s a damn shame. The winner that year was Reese Witherspoon for Walk The Line. But Ziyi wasn’t even nominated. I wish Hollywood would sort it’s shit out.
Because don't represent the real culture of japan, is a chinese actress and have blue eyes contact. Its an occidentalis movie. Japan have another concept of beauty.
Plus, Ziyi Zhang took a lot of time to study the role and was even given a kimono by a real geisha as a gift because of her performance and she was so humbled by it. She truly felt honored. Whatever role Ziyi Zhang takes on, she respects every aspect of it and executes it beautifully.
1:27 "The heart dies, a slow death, shedding each hope like leaves... until one day there are none. No hopes. Nothing remains. She paints her face to hide her face. Her eyes like deep water. It is not for Geisha to want. It is not for Geisha to feel. Geisha is an artist of the floating world. She dances. She sings. She entertains you, whatever you want. The rest is shadows. The rest is secret." - Excellent script !
Yes, I like this. But, the one thing that bothered me about the story was WHY did she love him, why did he love her? There was nothing between them, no connection, no chemistry. I didn’t feel bad for her when she lost him, because the story didn’t really show anything between them.
Preposterous no. I have the book, I started it, but never really got far. Do you think it’s better than the film? To be honest, I didn’t care for the main character in the movie. Her voice annoyed me. And I found the whole geisha philosophy to be very similar to that of a typical sexual performer, or prostitute. It was good that the story didn’t really glamorize it, it showed the sad, lonely side, and that made sense to me.
this movie had the most beautiful soundtrack of any movie I have watched. I usually don't even take note of the background score but wow- john williams at his best here. The music corresponds perfectly to every scene so much so that this movie would've been entirely different for me if this score wasn't a part of the film.
I'm a grown ass adult but this scene made me bawl like a baby Also, it's worthwhile to note that she did not throw the handkerchief just anywhere, from anyplace She gave it a proper goodbye, a worthy symbol, of her love, that brought her life purpose. She climbs that treacherous mountain and throws it into the most pristine blue ever, that's the least she could do for it. She doesn't even have the heart to look at it as she flungs it away as she is afraid she might hood herself back if she steals a glance. Beautiful scene, beautiful score, beautiful cinematography
That moment when you accept your destiny ... I find this scene very very beautiful, there is something extremely beautiful about accepting and letting go. Beauty and pain goes hand in hand
I think the author was touching on how female professional jealousy leads to sabotage whether you’re a “good person” or not. Hatsumomo was a raving bitch (but in all fairness she was probably a “made” monster rather than a born one) and didn’t hesitate to exploit or hurt others because she was basically miserable in her career. She truly wanted to be some farmer’s wife and that option and even the small comfort of a lover were denied her. Sayuri was a better person with better motives and she didn’t intentionally set out to alienate Pumpkin, but her success and favor with “Mother” led to Pumpkin’s envy and resentment and ultimately betrayal. Sayuri (and the audience) expect better outcomes because they treat others better. It doesn’t happen. When you better yourself, not everyone wishes you well. Even if they should.
In the book she almost throw it away , but eventually didnt. She kept it to remind of someone who left her forever. ( her parents, satsu, chairman, even though chairman is very much alive) So she might as well throw it away
P.S. Zhang was incredible in this. She deserves recognition that was sadly overlooked . Her performance and that of her counterparts were so outstanding!
I think the moment she lets go of the handkerchief, which simbolizes her childhood (dreams), she is prepared to meet Chairman. She becomes capable of meeting him in a new manner - not as a child, but as an independent woman.
This book made me feel more alive than any other book I've ever read. It made me feel a million emotions and sent me on a rollercoaster of pain and happiness. I love this movie as well but you have to read the book.
This scene is amazing and so sad to see her heart completely break when she gives up thinking she lost the only thing in the world she ever truly wanted forever!
I think we have all been there holding onto something and realizing we just need to let go. She held on to that love for years. I'm happy she got her magical ending.
I teared up a little with this scene. Yesterday this movie was on Tv and this time CRIED a LOT. Now, on my age, i understand her. SO MUCH. Is true...the heart dies...slow painful way...alone... pfffff.
She sings, she dances, she entertains you. Whatever you want. Geisha is an artist of the floating world. Words spoken so plainly yet with unintended coldness.
Just a wonderful movie, expertly directed by Rob Marshall. Zhang Zhi was (and still is) a fine actress and one of the most beautiful women on the face of the planet (she looks great in the new Godzilla flick). After Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon the world fell in love with her and it was well deserved.
im surpise ziyi zhang wasn't nominated for an oscar for her role in this movie, desepite being nominated for a bafta, sag, and a golden globe for best actress
This scene has moved me for years, makes me cry all the time.... yet I watch it now and think of what I'd do to live in the mountains near the beautiful ocean! Who needs a husband when you live next to that
Beautiful clip from an amazing movie. That face, that light, that sound, that music, the wind, the sea, those colors, drawing you in, into this great sense of loss and sorrow, and that knowing voice walks you across the bridge...in it's beautiful words.."the rest..is shadow..the rest..is secret." Absolutely, f**king gorgeous ! Jeez, this would make DaVinci piss his pants in amazement. Cinematic masterpiece in 2 and a half minutes. Thanks for posting.
I hope I don't annoy anyone by saying this. But I wanted the film to end here. Just so it would show that Sayuri/Chiyo is moving with the current, and that although it's hard to give up- she does it- having given up her dream in order to move on with her life. I like the ending but I always felt that even after she threw away the napkin- she was still holding out for the Chairman. Still it's a wonderful film. Ziyi Zhang put a lot of effort into this, she was allergic to her contracts she wore.
It's so deep this performance how Sayuri resignation for the rejecting to her dreamt love can become to be a closed jail...where there are no hope...how her destiny against her to get his more loved aim since was a child but she cannot have illusions because geishas has the love forbidden....It is one my favourite scenes from a film...Sayuri and her cruel destiny.
The overall impression of the movie is good, although i have to admit it made me yawn few times while watching. This scene, however, is astonishing! The way the weather portrayed her inner state, the following images of water surrounded by cold, wet rocks and wind is a breathtaking symbolism. There's another scene of such type at the beginning of the movie, the one that starts with "A story like mine should never be told". Simply spectacular.
Ziyi Zhang is one of greatest actresses of all time, in my view. Read she got married and might quit making movies. I wish her well in marriage, but hope she continues acting. I love her epic movies, in both Mandarin and when she speaks English.
I was living in Japan at the time the book came out. I was enthralled and it continues to be one of my five favorites, i have reread it many times and it never loses its richness. I have gifted this book (not my copy, of course) many times and everyone who received LOVED it ...even men.. The movie was as I pictured the characters in my mind and the music is always on any playlist I have.
The movies is a masterpiece, i wish it was longer. Im afraid to read the book, it would make me not like the movie as much. The movie has amazing everything, set, cinematography, music, it feels special, after i read the book i might thought differently
And it's so hypocritical, few people made a fuss about Mel Gibson playing a Scotsman in Braveheart or Liam Neeson playing a German businessman in Schindler's List, but for some reason it's a problem when a Chinese woman portrays a Japanese women... indeed such a huge difference.
japanese people are very "patriotic" and for them it was outhrageous that all the female actress were chinese. Yes for us can be a silly attitude but for them is iportant.
This was in the book too right? Beautiful quote. Sometimes I feel like that. And when the heart breaks, it breaks slowly, bit by bit, never shatters only once. How true this verse is.
Ziyi Zhang is a Chinese woman playing a Japanese Geisha. There was like 3 Chinese women playing the parts of being Japanese. People can't tell them a part anyways.
I'm quoting the first part on different websites since I saw the movie for the first time. great scene, one of my favs. thanks for posting ! (: Das Herz stirbt einen langsamen Tod. At the beginning I used to think, pumpkin was right I would make my revenge and make her feel like she did. But then, after growing up... I undestood that Sayuri was not at fault, pumpkin was not the best of the best but that' beside the point. Haven't read the book though, just watched the movie.

She actually got a lot of compliments and letters from real geishas praising her performance
@@angelabby2379 +1. Such a gorgeous woman and great performance from zhiyi zhang but i'd like to hear source too
to be frank there really no more real geisha not the ones that are being potrayed anyway.
I still cannot believe she wasn't nominated for an Oscar. She played the role of Sayuri so beautifully. Best actress winner in my opinion.
she is asian... that's why... oscars always so white.
whitewashing is so popular at that time.
This movie was her best performance ever actually, she had never passed this anymore. I also believed she should be nominated at Oscar at least.
Rehtse 7 you’re right. And it’s a damn shame. The winner that year was Reese Witherspoon for Walk The Line. But Ziyi wasn’t even nominated. I wish Hollywood would sort it’s shit out.

Yess i even notice that her japanese is pretty on point
That moment when you think everything you worked for is lost.......
IKR such a depressing moment.
Or that moment when you lost your first true love u.u
J.R. M Not entirely true right?! She ended alright.
It hurts. 😢
that's why you don't work for anything at all.

This scene brings tears to my eyes, every single time. I've felt this way before.

That moment when you accept your destiny ...
I find this scene very very beautiful, there is something extremely beautiful about accepting and letting go.
Beauty and pain goes hand in hand
So true.
This part reminded me of when Hatsumomo lost everything and Chiyo is feeling that herself.
Just Peachy yeah. They are similar in a way.
But Hatsumomo was a real bitch and didn't deserve her happiness. Although I did feel sorry for her anyway
In a way yes this scene mirrors that
in the book, she never threw away the chairman's handkerchief -_-
maivntsum Vang Then there is always someone who read the book and upset! It doesnt have to be!
During film making, director might come with more creative ways to tell the story using all available cinematic resources.
Actually she did
In the book she almost throw it away , but eventually didnt. She kept it to remind of someone who left her forever. ( her parents, satsu, chairman, even though chairman is very much alive)
So she might as well throw it away
Exactly
P.S.

The pain of having to let go..... to move on...... I've been there..... it's real.....knowing........thinking....you have no chance now..... :(

Moving to a new chapter and leaving loved ones is very hard. Not all can handle it.
True
I think the moment she lets go of the handkerchief, which simbolizes her childhood (dreams), she is prepared to meet Chairman. She becomes capable of meeting him in a new manner - not as a child, but as an independent woman.
This is so deep and so true..we have to truly transform to finally manifest the reality we want to live in 🦋
This book made me feel more alive than any other book I've ever read. It made me feel a million emotions and sent me on a rollercoaster of pain and happiness. I love this movie as well but you have to read the book.
This scene sums up my love life. Always unrequited.
You'll find the one don't give up
I felt sorry for Pumpkin too, She suffered a lot to and she was abandoned 😩
I do too. The whole situation was sad. But I understand Pumpkin's bitterness.
This scene is amazing and so sad to see her heart completely break when she gives up thinking she lost the only thing in the world she ever truly wanted forever!
This movie is flawless! I don't care who plays who! I just know that I feel in loveeee!
