one fan fact about DMC3 ...Reuben Langdon was hired for the role since in the ps2 era there wasnt much for facial graphical fidelity so they needed an actor who can realistically overact his expressions without making it funny (like DMC1) and he got that training from being a power ranger. In the intro where dante comes out from the bathroom drying his hair with his hands he was supposed to have a towel (which was later scraped because it would take way to long to animate) sits on his chair, answers the phone and hungs up...........that tiny little introduction took a week to make because the directors and animators couldn't decide what to do with him and couldn't agree what would be cooler and Reuben (after 70 or 80 retakes) was after some point violently pissed off the point he was like FUCK THIS and did what he thought without giving a fuck about the angles and actions and props shit, the assistants at the scenes that give him the props (like the chair swinging before he sits or the guy giving him the phone) wouldn't dare to object when he did the hand gestures to have them props ready, the scene ended up being so good that they ignored all their previous ideas and went on with Reuben's way of cool as a default for many cutscenes 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣, oh and they changed the jukebox after the mocap was done and it SHOWS, just to let you know that you aren't crazy to think something is off about the scene, the button was supposed to be down and a blade in his hands preventing him to push it but this made him look like an idiot, so they changed it to simply be a broken forward button and it looks weird since he is punching downwards with his hand being forward. Gaining a lot of trust from this Reuben was asked to find his virgil, so again, power rangers to the rescue calling his friend, Dan Southworth, for this exact same reason he was hired (realistic overacting) so the production also saved money by cutting off their casting because they have found their Vergil. DMC 1 is super slept on by the community (even though it's lowkey the best one) so it's really cathartic seeing you highlight everything great about it!
I don't think it's the best one, but it is my favourite one. Combination of a variety of factors: It was my first DMC game; it was one of the earlier PS2 titles I owned (I distinctly recall driving home with my stepbro after we got it at the store and getting excited from just the manual); I hadn't played Onimusha first so it felt 100% new. It does, however, do some things better than other games in the series. The art direction is absolutely peak. And no DMC game can match it in terms of basic enemy design (a consequence of being limited to mostly 1 enemy type per room). There's a reason most games directly pull enemies straight from 1. They're just so good. And while it's a negative point for some, I actually kinda like how you fight the same bosses multiple times. Something about each fight having new mechanics as if the bosses are trying to match Dante's pace of growth. Like 1 having terribble jump controls, or 3 being full of trashy filler bosses that drag down the quality compared to the good ones, or 4's latter half feeling underdeveloped, or V in... well V. We’ve been waiting nearly two years for a brand new video, and he comes out with a DMC Retrospective… *Hell yeah, let’s rock!* (Please don’t go on hiatus for another year 🙏)
it SHOWS that you put almost 3 years into this, HATS OFF TO YOU! Like hell someone like me could pull together a video over two damn years, so it's just amazing to see someone pull that off, and this video is just.. amazing! Its both funny and inspiring, and I feel like it basically stole the feelings I have for DMC I just couldn't put into words, Thank you so much for making this video!
I think an aspect of Vergil's motivations (hah) that gets slept on a lot in 3, is his drive to protect - both himself and dante. It could be said to be a retrospective trait to his story and character that was added and fleshed out more in 5 and specifically with the Visions of V manga, but still, with the understanding of the story we have today the picture it paints of 3, at least to me, is a lot more complex than just "power hungry idiot who bumbles through just trying to get more powerful and prove to dante he's the strongest twin". From what we know of him, we know he's been on the run from Mundus' forces since he was a child - dante was, too, but he was never as cornered as vergil was, who likely had to brute force it through demon attack after demon attck since he was 8 all the way until we see him again in 3. Dante had to fight too, but likely not until he was a little more battle ready - and while there's no indication so far that vergil had any human caretakers at all from the moment their mother died, dante had been adopted by at least one human family until he was in his late teens (as seen in the TV anime + what remains canon of the first dmc novel). All this to say, Vergil was likely desperate - desperate to not feel Mundus' breath at his heel, and once he learns Dante is alive, to make sure his brother is off of his tracks, too. That leaves him open to Arkham's manipulation - someone with ulterior motives who sells Vergil on the fact that yes, he has the arcane knowledge needed to find him an easy path to getting the power he needs to defeat Mundus, and yes, he needs his help to achieve that, when in reality we know Arkham was never telling Vergil the full instructions for how to unlock the gate because he planned from the getgo to waltz in and take that power for himself. And that very last fight between Vergil and Dante - to me, it's clear what Vergil's trying to do. He wants to rush in to challenge Mundus - both because his pride won't allow him to alter his plans, even after they fell spectacularly through and he never did end up getting the power boost he thought he would get before starting the fight - but also because he knows they're running out of time, that the longer they stall the more likely they will be to have Mundus rally his forces against them... and if Dante has won, if Dante really is stronger than him enough to take Sparda's power, then the least Vergil can do to at least give his brother a fighting chance is to jump in, keep Mundus busy, and hope either for a miracle, or that by the time Mundus is done with him Dante will be strong enough to defeat him on his own. But obviously, him being as proud and unwilling to concede a win to Dante as he is, only leads him to resentment even though this emergency plan works - which is how we get his actions in 5, more last-ditch desperate efforts so he wouldn't die, yes, but also the overwhelming urge to "set the record" and get a rematch with dante to prove, even to himself, that he is the strongest twin after all.
Someone else pointed it out to me, but Vergil sliced Dante’s hand right through the area of the tendons that Close the hand. With Dante’s healing it doesn’t take long to repair but by then it’s too late, he’s lost his chance to grab Vergil. It’s such a subtle move to protect his brother while still keeping his pride. Because if Dante had grabbed him, they might have Both fallen.
Notably I think the fact that he has rejected Dante reveals how damaged he is. He's so traumatized by not being able to protect himself and losing his family that he pushes the only family he has away just so he can't be hurt again. One of the faults of the game IMO is that they don't explain what happened in the prequel manga. Dante was happy to see Vergil at first. He's angry at him now because Vergil was only interested in taking the amulet.
Can we talk about how insanely goated Capcom is? Brought us so many gaming genres and mechanics as we know them today. Survival Horror, Character Action, Fighting Games, 3rd person over the shoulder camera, weapon and stance switching, air juggles, delay based combos just to name a few.
@@ADEtheMayhem Shouldn't it be argued Shenmue did the cinematic game first? Also, story focused was WAY before PS2. Text RPG's existed before we even got to the SNES.
Bro you fucking nailed it. This is the best retrospective I've seen. Hearing your excitement on this franchise made me feel like a kid again. I remember feeling like that for each entry. I agree with you when it comes to 3 and I put it in the same ranking. I was happy that people loved it when it came out and I loved it too but I realized that there were so many bad segments in that game. For me, 1 didn't have many bad segments accept for mundus phase 1. 1 is very underrated in my opinion. When 5 came out I had chills and it was a hard time in my life when it came out. It felt like dmc 1 all over again.
As a longtime fan, I've deeply enjoyed your retrospective. You convey a lot of passion for every aspect of the games (the good AND the bad), plus you really know how to talk about game design. I also agree with your final ranking: to me, DMC1 will be always the best. I first played it when I was 11, in the beginning it scared the shit out of me but then it got me so excited as I discovered every new mechanic, enjoyed the absolutely bonkers cutscenes and marveled because of the soundtrack and the environments. Long live to this amazing series, and let's hope a DMC6 drops soon.
I may have only played through each game once (with the exception of messing around with Virgil for a bit in 3,4&5) but DMC1 will always hold a special place in my heart because of how it makes you feel like a OP badass in what would otherwise be a horror game. I don't think I'll ever forget how cool it was to hear Nelo Angelo's theme kick in right before he hit the ground and you fought him for the first time.
Just wanted to note that Morrison isn’t a new character because there was a dmc anime (not the new one being developed for Netflix, the old one) that takes place after dmc 1. Morrison is Dante’s broker (who was also a white guy in the anime). There’s also that girl, patty (the girl on the phone in that one cutscene where Dante picks up his office phone to answer a call). It was honestly a cool addition imo. 2:01:56 I mean DMC5 is just overall a love letter to the franchise and is more so dedicated to the fans in general but it can at the same time be a gateway to the other ones 2:03:29 “hell and hell” mode is exactly what it says is all I’m gonna say Great video tho! I enjoyed watching this as a long time DMC fan. You really covered a lot of my opinions on the games as well as got a laugh out of me 🐈
Thanks for giving me something to watch while i beat bloody palace! I grew up with this series, its my favorite, and its cool to see a new fan go back and appreciate all the old stuff.
@@SimplyDad If you're looking for a non-megaten turned based rpg, should definitely give Chained Echoes a look. One of the best modern releases and has an amazing combat system and story.
dmc2 has joined p3 in the "except this one" genre of games as someone who has never really played the games this video was fantastic and it did a phenomenal job laying out what each game was about, especially loved the dmc1 part. in my opinion no gaming videos are better than one where the person can just go into so much detail about why they love a game so much, it's a nice reminder of why i love my own favorite games. hope whenever the next video may be has that same energy behind it
I'm super late to this video, but I'm really glad the algorithm suggested it to me. It's fantastic, well-edited and I think you nailed exactly what you described in the outro. It's one of my favorite retrospectives I've watched. And that outro to Legacy... Chills. Absolute chills. Bravo.
Something I noticed about the Legacy track for DMC5: I’m pretty sure it’s talking about Sparda and the legacy he’s left behind. When you approach Dante’s old home in Mission 12, a much more somber version of the track plays, but when Nero unlocks his Devil Trigger in Mission 20, the track is in full swing. Nero represents Sparda’s legacy and what he stood for better than Vergil and Dante could ever hope to. Just a neat observation I made, idk if that’s actually what it means, but that’s what I got.
Amazing video, Simply Dad! Definitely worth all the suffering to put it all together! I was so captivated by how you talked about DMC1. I'm a big fan of the series (and played the hell out of 3, 4 and 5) but I've never been able to sit down and finish the first one. Just by the way you were talking about I'm MOTIVATED to see it through, at least on Hard mode anyways

No lie, this is the best video on your channel man. Funnily enough I got into your channel through your persona 3 takes (even though I hard disagree with them) but I found you so damn entertaining I said fuck it, let me listen to his nonsense. This video single handedly made me want to play the dmc games though, thanks!
Just wanna say I love your vid man, really well researched and made. The DMC series was one of the games me and my brother would GRIND on weekends and after school, splitting weapons and styles throughout the games so we each played differently (He primarily used Sword Master and Trickster while I used Gun Slinger and Royal Guard in DMC 3, for example). Fun Fact: Did you know that during the battle against Arkam with Vergil as well as whenever you use Dopple Ganger, you can plug in another controller and Player 2 has full control of Vergil/Shadow Dante? Although the Camera made it a bit difficult to use, it was a BLAST.
Really great retrospective. Also nice to hear the first game getting more love. It's not my favourite, but it's nice to hear praise for some things I may have overlooked or not paid as much attention to.
Oh uh Morrison was a character from the DMC Anime adaption that had its own story. So I guess they wanted to connect that to the main series and make it canon. In fact, Nico's mother, who creates weapons for Dante, iirc, was from a novel.
If you didn't know, the fight with the blob with Dante and Vergil, if you have a second controller someone else can play as Vergil. That also goes for the shadow you summon from that skill you get later in the game
The DMC reboot is prob my biggest guilty pleasure of all fucking time😭 The gameplay is SOOOOOOOO much fun and some of art design for the environment were really unique .
Soulstice (which released late last year) may be worth taking a look into as well. Got around seven different weapons, good roster of enemies, a Style meter that's mixed with the Special meter and can be used in a few different ways, and it has a take on color coding that doesn't actually limit what weapons you *can* use on enemies. Instead using weapons of a certain color on same-colored enemies, the player character's dead sister as a ghost casts a forcefield that moves along with the player character. As long as an enemy is within the forcefield, you can use any of the seven weapons total on any enemy. There's a lategame upgrade that allows for the forcefield to expand and for the vulnerability effect to last on enemies for a few seconds when not in the forcefield's reach of influence anymore, too. Drags on a bit and there's a few annoying enemies, plus the voice acting has some weaker spots. But for a game that's the first real big production of a... mid-sized studio, it's a very good game. Spread the word on it. And maybe the likes of The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, Hi-Fi Rush, and/or the upcoming Enenra and Genokids may prove to your interest as well.
dmc 1 is so underrated holy shit. so many people pretend it isn’t just as good as the others cause you don’t have a million moves. it’s different, not bad or mediocre
It’s not underrated tf? Game was really successful. It’s just aged fucking horribly and without your rose tinted glasses the game is frankly awful. It’s not any better than dmc2 but nobody defends dmc2 bc they don’t have some nostalgia or bias blinding them. They’re both horrible. I played them in order with absolutely no expectations or knowledge of the game. I pretty much only played bayonetta 1 and had heard dmc was similar so I was “wth it’s on sale for 2 dollars I’ll play them” during the start of Covid. Was still disappointed by how poorly it’s aged. Finished it in maybe 2-ish days. Have not replayed it since. Same with dmc2, except I replayed it once but with Lucia which was a lot more enjoyable bc it was meant to be played as her. Still sucks, but better than dmc1. Which isn’t a high standard. I pretty much only play dmc3, 4 and occasionally 5. The older games have aged awfully.
Bro thank you so much for making this vid. Dmc has been my long time favorite franchise and after quite a few year's breaks from games I love seeing someone new to the franchise have so much praise and excitement for it. It reignites my own passion for these games, now I can't wait to go CUUHRAZY again
Morrison in DMC 5 is actually a character from the DMC anime. He got a race swap but is still supposed to be the same guy. The anime isn’t bad if you want to watch it, plus it’s easy to find for free on RUclips.
Finally someone brings up this music! 7:07 I was absolutely obsessed with how dark and beautiful it was a kid and it's what made me seek out more music like it! I eventually came upon neoclassical darkwave and eventually made my way through other goth music. Wonderful retrospective!
Bro I just watched Josh Strife Devil May Cry Video and was wanting to re-remind myself about the one I played DMC 3. Then I saw your video and no joke. the "c*m-dimension" had me rolling so hard i liked and had to make this comment. Can't wait to finish the rest of this video!
DMC5 will always be my favorite simply due to the memories I have of it. I was screaming like a madman when it released, it was the only game I ever preordered, and on the day it came out (which was scheduled to release at around 4 AM in my timezone) I waited for it and played it in one sitting without going to sleep until I finished it. Then I went to sleep and played through it on a harder difficulty again. Even now whenever I get that "I just wanna play a game that makes me feel cool" I immediately think of this one. The music, the gameplay, the characters and story, CAPCOM nailed everything for me. Except that one fckn boss you fight as Nero which I can't even remember the name of but nothing is perfect so whatever.
So glad to see an upload from you in my recommended, and on one of my favorite game series to boot. Can’t wait to listen to this on a long car trip later today, keep up the good work bro
I remember first playing DMC (first one) on my PS2 back in the days and thought it was a 'not bad' game but after playing it for a while and getting used to the combat i was starting enjoy the game and eventually I leaned into the story itself, from there I was a big DMC fan. A truly a nostalgic game including 3 and 4. The DMC series will always have that special place in my heart for sure! I just wish i could relive that childhood moment.

NGL, the use of Jin Kazama's theme with the PlayStation noise for the intro was absolutely fire!
Man you did your thing with this one. Id show this video to anybody that wants to know why we love DMC so much. Nailed it
Can we talk about how insanely goated Capcom is? Brought us so many gaming genres and mechanics as we know them today. Survival Horror, Character Action, Fighting Games, 3rd person over the shoulder camera, weapon and stance switching, air juggles, delay based combos just to name a few.
Even a story focused game with asura's wrath
@@ADEtheMayhem Shouldn't it be argued Shenmue did the cinematic game first?
Also, story focused was WAY before PS2. Text RPG's existed before we even got to the SNES.
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 i think today cinematic means a lot of focus on the visual part, adveture games are only storie and no graphic
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 shenmue for me is like "slice of life the videogame"
Just gotta ignore the early-mid 2010s Capcom tho lmao
Bro omg this video is so good. As a long time dmc fan you do the series justice. You also funny as hell dawg
you should do more non-megaten videos this was worth the wait
A banger of a 2 hour retrospective! You made me want to play the DMC games again. Thanks and keep it up man!
Long live to this amazing series, and let's hope a DMC6 drops soon.
wow
I may have only played through each game once (with the exception of messing around with Virgil for a bit in 3,4&5) but DMC1 will always hold a special place in my heart because of how it makes you feel like a OP badass in what would otherwise be a horror game. I don't think I'll ever forget how cool it was to hear Nelo Angelo's theme kick in right before he hit the ground and you fought him for the first time.
You're not really fully onboard DMC until you love the DMC1 dialog and cutscenes sincerely
2:01:56 I mean DMC5 is just overall a love letter to the franchise and is more so dedicated to the fans in general but it can at the same time be a gateway to the other ones
2:03:29 “hell and hell” mode is exactly what it says is all I’m gonna say
Great video tho! I enjoyed watching this as a long time DMC fan. You really covered a lot of my opinions on the games as well as got a laugh out of me 🐈
One of my favorite franchises of all time. I'm so glad you made a video about it.
Thanks for giving me something to watch while i beat bloody palace! I grew up with this series, its my favorite, and its cool to see a new fan go back and appreciate all the old stuff.
Yesssss! Finally another video! Still waiting for your Soul Hackers 2 video but might as well wait for your P3 Reload one
not spending my money on either of those games sadly
@@SimplyDad Based, SegAtlus is so lame.
@@SimplyDad If you're looking for a non-megaten turned based rpg, should definitely give Chained Echoes a look. One of the best modern releases and has an amazing combat system and story.
Bro. That footage and editing at 2:12:50 was MASTERFUL.
dmc2 has joined p3 in the "except this one" genre of games
as someone who has never really played the games this video was fantastic and it did a phenomenal job laying out what each game was about, especially loved the dmc1 part. in my opinion no gaming videos are better than one where the person can just go into so much detail about why they love a game so much, it's a nice reminder of why i love my own favorite games. hope whenever the next video may be has that same energy behind it
I'm super late to this video, but I'm really glad the algorithm suggested it to me. It's fantastic, well-edited and I think you nailed exactly what you described in the outro. It's one of my favorite retrospectives I've watched. And that outro to Legacy... Chills. Absolute chills. Bravo.
any dmc game highkey has me screaming crying throwing up even on easy mode bc i suck but they’re so much fun TT great video!!!
I can't wait to get mad at this on reddit! I LOVE BEING A WEABOO!
hi dendy
I've been waiting for this!
Extremely well made video on one of the most iconic video game series. Cudos for a job very well done! 👍
Can't wait for your SNK fighting games or Tekken retrospectives.
Hell yeah
Oh that’d be sick
Something I noticed about the Legacy track for DMC5: I’m pretty sure it’s talking about Sparda and the legacy he’s left behind. When you approach Dante’s old home in Mission 12, a much more somber version of the track plays, but when Nero unlocks his Devil Trigger in Mission 20, the track is in full swing.
Nero represents Sparda’s legacy and what he stood for better than Vergil and Dante could ever hope to.
Just a neat observation I made, idk if that’s actually what it means, but that’s what I got.
Loved it! Just commenting for the algorithm
I love The Simply Dad Channel
Finally finished this video!! Great job!! 🔥🔥🤩🤩👏🏿👏🏿🫡🫡
Watched this at work, made me forget My life fucking sucks 7/10
The plastic chair killed me! 😂
The real experience is the DMD mode, and ngl it's definitely the hardest in the series.
I love the devil may cry series it’s really amazing and badass in my opinion.
This passionate video just earned you a new follower.
DMC is one of my favorite series of all time. What more can I say?
Dad, I just want to thank you for this video, something just sparked inside me and I want to replay the series too now.. Time to download that HD Collection baby!
Yo nah you gotta get DMC3 on Switch because it is the only version to have Style switching.
@@backupschmliff1156 Sorry I'm poor I only got to the choice of HD Collection that's actually playable and that one port that I don't know if any computer can handle at all in more than.. 10 fps?
@@makirolle Well, it goes on sale for like $7 every now and then, so maybe you can pick it up if you truly need it
The DMCV reveal was a freaking amazing moment in gaming history.
No lie, this is the best video on your channel man. Funnily enough I got into your channel through your persona 3 takes (even though I hard disagree with them) but I found you so damn entertaining I said fuck it, let me listen to his nonsense. This video single handedly made me want to play the dmc games though, thanks!
watched the whole video. worth it
This is an amazing retrospective, all your hard work really shows.
It makes me want to play to older games since I already have DMC 5
Nah this man is hilarious you said how I felt about the whole series I gotta hear how he feels about Peak of Combat 😭😭subscribed!
Ayo, those combat edits were clean as fuck, you've got an eye for it. Subbed and eagerly awaiting your next video
This was really good pretty much agree with everything that was said glad to finally see it come out
Just wanna say I love your vid man, really well researched and made.
Although the Camera made it a bit difficult to use, it was a BLAST.
excellent video, covered all the aspects of the game!
Really great retrospective. Also nice to hear the first game getting more love. It's not my favourite, but it's nice to hear praise for some things I may have overlooked or not paid as much attention to.
i love that POC is not even in the review. a true fan
i was playing this game at 5 years old devil may cry 3 was my childhood
This video was so sick and really makes me wanna give 1 and 3 another shot. I loved 5 but I wanna replay it just because you somehow Re-sold me on it.
You f****** said it all brother. 🔥🔥🔥
I'm really happy to see you back SimplyDad! Keep up the amazing work! (^w^)♡
I really love this series, great video
Oh uh Morrison was a character from the DMC Anime adaption that had its own story. So I guess they wanted to connect that to the main series and make it canon. In fact, Nico's mother, who creates weapons for Dante, iirc, was from a novel.
It's Nico's Grandma named Nell Goldstein who made Ebony & Ivory, the pistols that Dante mainly used
If you didn't know, the fight with the blob with Dante and Vergil, if you have a second controller someone else can play as Vergil. That also goes for the shadow you summon from that skill you get later in the game
The best retrospective of this amazing series. Thanks dad, you’re the best.
The DMC reboot is prob my biggest guilty pleasure of all fucking time😭
The gameplay is SOOOOOOOO much fun and some of art design for the environment were really unique .
@@zzodysseuszz dude chill lol. i don’t have nostalgia for it, i played the game first time like 2 years ago. i like it. you don’t have to agree
ain't even been an hour and this already showed up in my "Watch it again" tab and idk maybe i fuckin will
Bro thank you so much for making this vid.
I LOVE this video . DMC is mad underrated
Incredibly well-made video
First video of yours I've watched. The script was solid frfr. Subbed
That was a really good video and I think you should make more!
That way I don't have to keep on re-watching the older ones.
The only Good thing to be Said about DMC 2 is that Dantes DMC 2 outfit is literally the most Badass fucking character design ever.
I grew up watching my brothers play these games and was so insanely hyped when I saw 5 get announced out of the blue.
The amount of times I’ve come back to listen to this video while at work, simply bc it’s so informative/funny is insane.😂
Simply a splendid video. I also watched the Persona videos you made and I enjoyed it a lot. Would like to see more from this channel.
Not only is he back, but talking about my favorite series? Life is good.
Dad came back with milk! 🥲
Love your editing style, you do great work on LS Marks channel
The best Christmas gift, a new video.
Funny how this series has devs from SMT in it somehow. Thanks for existing Simply Dad.
No matter where he goes a smt is somehow in every video on this channel he’s probably got a curse or something.
Bro just finished the video and ty for all your hard work!!!
I had no idea you liked dmc! DMC 3 is my favorite game of all time, so this is peakkkk content
Commenting to say great job bro, and that Goliaths theme reminds me of pirates too
I will probably never be sold on trying a spectacle fighter. But DMC 5's story in how you told it did get me hype.
Quite the interesting retrospective from you simply dad I didn't expect this but we all have our opinions and I'll try to respect your criticisms based on your experience.
interesting topic but fell off bc i don’t like your manner of speech. good luck
