  • The Honda Type R is finally coming to the US, but we've missed out on many great versions including this 9th Gen FK2 monster. The first Turbo VTEC Civic has a new personality and a lot of horsepower. European Correspondent Thomas Hellmanzik thrashes the Civic around back roads and goes in search of its claimed top speed.

    It was a BOLD move for Honda to style the FK2 how they did. This is probably the best example of a love it or hate it car (there really isn't a middle ground). As someone who loves the FN2 generation, I like the FK2! It's so outlandish in all the good ways.

      Big Irish Yeti 👍 I totally agree with your comment. You are buying the car to please yourself, not to please or to yearn acceptance from people. My wife asked the other day if I was being a show off with my 3 inch exhaust on my 300zx. I told her I don't give a shit about what people think I love it!

    Personally I prefer the FK2 over the incoming "global" Civic Type R. Never really took to the 10th generation Civic body shape - it's as if Honda tried to out-Subaru Subaru's glory days with the GC8 and GDB Imprezas and forgot how it used to style its cars cleanly. That Type R and this outgoing FK2 have basically the same drivetrain anyway, and the FK2 at least has visual similarity to and progression from the Europe-only FN2 Civic/Type R.

    Really interesting how divisive the looks are on this car. Honda cars typically are redesigned for the american market to appeal to their taste which I would describe as large, macho and less angular. But this was designed for the Japanese and European market where looking futuristic and high tech isn't a bad thing.

    "Pontiac Aztek of hatchbacks" :D LOL, pretty accurate description. The civics of the 90's that really launched the import scene were popular cause they were so customizable. Simple and clean from the factory, the owner could take the car in any direction they wanted. Not so much with this "spaceship"...

    Had an FK2 for a year now. Don't know much about the Fiesta ST, but can you get lift off oversteer in the FK2? You certainly can, especially when you change from the standard (unfit for purpose) Conti 6's to better tyres.

    I know they say it's coming to the US, and it may actually come to the US, but I've recently given up on Honda for the first time since '95 due to their neverending line of bullshit that they're going to put HP into their cars and just went with a WRX. Of course the Type R Civic should have AWD, it's a no brainer - but that argument can go on without me. What I've yet to see is Honda come through with a single threat of HP. The Civic Si had what, 200hp? How adorable! Honda has to decide if they want to be Toyota or not. By the time this FWD teenager-killer hits our markets, Tesla's gonna be churning out AWD electric subcompacts that'll beat Hellcats. Whoever runs Honda should just stick to putting that nice red paint on boring subcompacts when they feel aggressive, rather than pretend they have something that makes sense. Does the CRZ ring a bell? The Honda Fit is still their best car, because it does more than what it has to. Honda seems shocked that it's selling so well. Someone has to walk into the Dadjeans In Charge's office at Honda and show them what the competition's been up to.

    Red and black is the most ricey and tacky color scheme on anything except a Corvette or an exotic supercar. The wing looks like a Pep Boys afterthought and the "Type R" logo on the seats does too. They actually sell Pep Boys knocmoff racing seats with that emblem on them. Would I own one? If they had just made this car RWD it would be unbelievable. Also, a 2.0 NA motor that went to 10,000 rpm (1,000 past the s2000 engine from 17 years ago) with or without DI would definitely have been well received

      +Kibba I know my friend :( I was hoping maybe manufacturers would have taken a different approach. Example: the 458 Italia to the 488 gtb. Instead of the car remaining the same weight (3,300lbs) and going from 570hp to 660hp. Instead they go from 3,300 lbs to 2,800 lbs, and 570hp to like 480 horsepower. That woulda been nice for a change.

    • @caseycolgan8321
      @caseycolgan8321 7 лет назад

      +Kibba instead of going from 570 N/A to 660 with turbos add more carbon fiber, smaller width and length. Obviously some DI and improved VVT, high compression.. this is just a full grown man day dreaming here lol

    i dont like how it looks. it looks way too much like the accord from the front and the back does not look sporty at all. it looks too japanese if that makes any sense. maybe i like more subtle styling. idk maybe im an old ass 24yo but thats just me.
    performance-wise, i take my hat off too honda for making the type R available in the US. however, i wish they would have styled the rear lights different than the typical civic mostly because, i personally dont like them.
    unfortunately its turbo charged now, N/A civics will be the thing of the past. i like the extra torque but cmon VTEC!!! we want the traditional VTEC JUST KICKED IN YOOOOOO
    interior beautiful. no torque steer, impressive.
    my bro has an NSRT-4 , about 260wtq and 240whp and it has mean torque steer lol i cant imagine how the type R would handle without mitigating torque steer
