    To summarize:
No, Starlink did not outright save Star Fox and is not even a Star Fox game, but it did utilize the characters well, copying the type of narrative banter first used in Star Fox Assault. It also suggested some good ideas (open world, character-specific boss phases/missions), and the cutscenes were by far the best part. The core Starlink gameplay, however, is little more than strafing around on the ground firing elemental weapons at repetitive monster-type enemies, and an exhausting amount of mindless fetch quests.
To defend that as good gameplay is sad, in my opinion. It is my hope that the good ideas and presentation are used for the future, but the core heart of Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault are used as the foundation of the next actual Star Fox. I personally will never call Starlink a Star Fox game, but I applaud them for the presentation and suggestions for the franchise.

This is what's so painful about being a Star Fox fan, and you hit the nail on the head. There's is an absolutely amazing game waiting to be released, it just takes someone to grab the bull by the horns, and flesh out all of these scattered ideas and form it into one cohesive experience. Starlink in a lot of ways was that Star Fox experience the fans have been waiting for, it just got bogged down by a boring story, repetition, toys to life, and the typical Ubisoft grind. I truly believe the future of Star Fox is a combination of Starlinks ability to freely explore the solar system, interspersed with on rails and all range combat of traditional Star Fox. I just hope we one day see this realized, and that the franchise hasn't been put on ice like F-Zero or Earthbound.

Yeah, let's hope they are reading into the positive reception correctly. My fear is that they think people like this game for all the wrong reasons, because the idiots who say stuff like, "best Star Fox ever," or "the only good Star Fox game," have no idea what they're talking about. The character presentation was good, and some breadcrumb ideas seem good if implemented differently, but the rest is forgettable. 64 and Assault I'd say are still the core heart of the franchise that need building off of, mixed with Starlink and the anime short's level of presentation.

With what Starlink did for Star Fox, I now just wait for the return to the timeline of the gamecube games so they can be give better treatment. I'm ready to return to that time line and fed up with the Lylat Wars timeline. That and a return to Assault's on-foot mission gameplay it's the right step for the series at the time before devolving in Command and Zero.

No joke this seriously had a lot of what I wanted in the next starfox game from free roaming (in the ships of course) around space and going to and from planest, ship customization, leveling up, multiple characters to play as with their own attributes and specials and skill tree's, and bounty hunting and racing on the side. What i'd like to see them try next is go mass effect with conversation tree's, and of course; bring back krystal, Miyu and Fay. Maybe even Fara Phoenix if thats asking too much.

This game is something like a perfect storm in my eyes. With the exceptional care and reverence Ubisoft has shown for Nintendo’s IPs between this and Mario + Rabbids, I think Nintendo would be batty not to seek out a licensing deal with them to develop a main series title.
On the other end, Ubisoft’s attempt to build their new space action IP has effectively gone up in flames, and the creatives, infrastructure and assets are now just laying around.

honestly I've treated Starlink being an unofficial sequel to Starfox Zero... as Wolf did escape leaving the Starfox crew to focus on Andross and ending the war he started, so them later hunting Wolf down was kind of a loose end that worked surprisingly well for this game

The problem with Wolf in Starlink is that he’s more of a generic villain, he was never like that in the other games.
He’s more of a hire for muscle guy, he could care less for domination.

I completely agree on the cutscenes part. I’d give ANYTHING for a StarFox show with the animation and voice acting quality of Starlink.
Also, I … don’t mind the crossover with the humans? Idk maybe it’s because I grew up with Sonic and guardians of the galaxy and smash but seeing Fox call them by their names and engaging in their conversations, it showed that SOME effort was put into that. Even if their dialogues were corny and generic, I don’t think it’s bad.

The plotline developed across SF64, SFAd and SFAs has so much potential, and it still can be given a well-deserving end in the next installment. Also, I think Assault has all the best ideas for core gameplay, just needs to be ironed out and even incorporate some of Starlink's (such as playing with every character and their unique abilities). I mean, it shouldn't be that hard to pull this off - both the animation and the DLC proved the franchise still have potential for becoming a best-seller. I hope Nintendo is actually working on it

I hate to be that guy, but I think a good next step for the franchise would be to allow the next game to be developed with out Shigeru Miyamoto's involvement. No offense to him but I think the franchise's history shows that even he can make mistakes.

  • @TheGamePixelz

Imo this is the natural evolution of Star Fox. There's just no market for the kind of gameplay that Star Fox 64 tried to do in the modern world. Most people would beat it in a couple hours, not do any replays, and complain that it's short and shallow. If you've played games like No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous, Starlink is easily the best game in the space exploration genre and I don't find that the repetition bogged down such an amazing game as it usually does with ubi sandboxes.

    • @kurokamina8429
      @kurokamina8429 Год назад

While I like 64s gameplay unfortunately yeah it might not work for modern era as the bases of 64s gameplay is short and have you play the same levels over and over which might not be fun for modern gamers who are used to longer experience with more variety of what you can do in the game.
Star fox assaults vehicle swapping idea, with 3rd person like ratchet and clank with more mission variation co op and being able to play other characters. Returning characters with their own unique abilities and ships. With a run time of maybe 6hr, then we could have something great from a single player experience.
Outside the main game could include arcade mode with the classic 64 mode and maybe a sort of remaster remake of the gameplay in sf 2.
Multiplayer again haveva co op mode as well as an online multiplayer similar to assaults. Again a great game is out there, they are sitting on a gold mine

What I learned from all Star Fox games, and how to make a good one that will resonate with fans:
    1. Open Galaxy with Free Roam for exploring and taking on missions. (Make it optional, ensuring fast pace of the main game at the risk of missing out on side content)
    2. Planets / Airspaces should act as stages for missions, either all-range or on-rails (not exclusively).
    3. The story should allow for character development, growth and expression of personality. It should also be a key focus, regardless of what Miyamoto thinks.
    4. On-the-fly character swapping. Make 4 different on-rail paths if you have to, but let us play as any of the pilots at will, to allow for each of them to shine.
    5. Land battles should maintain the fast pace. Character Action / Spectacle Fighters are an excellent way to make them more exciting. Smash Bros has set the template for fast hand to hand combat for Fox and Falco already, but if you want to stay inside a machine - I recommend a bipedal mech instead of the chicken walker (ala Armored Core or Gundam)
    6. No Andross. No retelling of the Lylat Wars.
    7. Customizable ships and pilot gear. Apart from the campaign, this would allow for a user created character to be used in multiplayer, akin to the Inklings in Splatoon.
    8. Branching mission structure. If a player completes the normal objective of a mission, they go on a regular path. If they complete a secondary mission as well, they open a different mission path that converges with the regular path later. Players can play the regular path mission after completing the alternate one (and finding the regular path themselves in free roam). But the alternate remains locked, unless the player replays the previous mission.)
    9. Just my own thought: bring back the female pilots (Miyu, Fay and Krystal), and integrate them in properly as playable characters. Make sure to properly characterize them and make them compelling characters, rather than squandered potential.
Wait a minute.... I'm just describing the fan game Star Fox Event Horizon, aren't I?

It needs a lot more than what it is. All that you described is the simple concept of open world. The rest of the gameplay of the game is fetch quests and attaching random elemental guns on top of the ship's wings to ground strafe around repetitive monster things. All of that needs to change to be considered good Star Fox gameplay. Open world is a neat idea, but how they did it here is not good enough.

Also I just love how the starfox crew just bring out a TMNT vibe with how they are in the cutscenes and banters. Fox is like Leo, Falco is Raph, Peppy can be Donnie and Slippy could be MIkey but you could switch that around since Slippy/Donnie's the mechanic and Peppy/Mikey like to spew one liners.

There was nothing wrong with the one liners in Star Fox 64 and they did a good job with establishing the characters' personalities. Slippy as the rookie pilot, but also the tech guy. Peppy as the wise mentor. And Falco as the ace pilot with attitude. The dialogues in Assault and Starlink help flesh out their personalities more and I love their banters, but sometimes even a few lines of dialogue is just as good if not better. But with that being said, I'd love to see a new Star Fox game in this style

    • @GoodOldDaysGaming

Oh I agree. Star Fox 64 is why we know anything about the characters in the first place. But what they did in both Assault and here in Starlink was neat to see, now that the 64 groundwork has been established. To be clear, I'm heavily in the camp that does not view Starlink as a Star Fox game and gets sort of mad at the notion, but I can see the positives that were done with the cameo.

StarFox Assault and StarFox 2 are my favorite games and the model of what I think the series should have been. I guess that's a departure from what most people want. Naturally Zero was a subversion to what I was hoping for in every possible way with change. However, I don't dislike 64, so seeing a hollower imitation of it be dropped on the WiiU a year after it stopped being relevant soured an already bitter experience for me.
StarLink was a step in the right direction for me, and overall far better executed. I was shocked that Ubisoft of all studios could do better than a game developed and led by Miyamoto and Platinum Games. Though it didn't expand the cast or progress the universe, the gameplay and open exploration lends a loving hand to people that might prefer the GameCube games while still trying to appeal to traditional StarFox fans as well. That goes well with the characters being more involved and the tone being more serious, focused and lively unlike Zero. I agree with this evaluation, and I hope Nintendo learns from this example.

Since it did better on the switch than other platforms, hopefully, both Nintendo and Ubisoft do consider making it a console exclusive if they ever choose to revisit the game. Given the basic nature of the story, it leaves plenty of room to build off of, besides Star fox they could include other iconic space-themed characters like Samus and Captain Falcon. What held the game back was the "toys to life" era fatigue which the game doesn't need to fully rely on.

Lets be real with Starlink and Mario+ Rabbits. Ubisoft clearly shows a fair understanding of what both Starfox and Mario fans have wanted for years. While yes Starlink has a core issue . That can't be limited to starfox since, thats a nintendo issue. An looking at how MArio+ rabbits allowed mario to use guns in a turn based rpg game. While, feeling like a massive upgrade from the poor rpgs nintendo has offered.
The care in the Ubisoft take on Nintendo ips is clearly done with passion unlike most Ubisoft in house games. Meanwhile, there take on Nintendo ips show there are fans from Ubisoft who clearly grew up with the ips and wanted to make passion project games even, if Nintendo was being restrictive. If the Wiiu didnt force gimics Starfox 0 would be a perfect onrails game. Which Cemu emulation proves. IT's just a shame Miyamoto has to be stuck up with the lets reboot the series to justify a port mindset.

I actually have this game, I just haven’t gotten around to playing it. From what everyone has said it’s really fun, just have some big flaws (one of them being the toys to life gimmick that thankfully went extinct).
It’s said that Nintendo doesn’t know how to use their own franchise, and never build on what works.
Luckily there’s this big fan game called Star Fox Event Horizon made by this guy called UndyingNephalim. It’s basically a reimagining of the 64 continuity that borrows ideas from the different timelines (I’m aware that Nintendo never officially came and said that there’s different timelines, but each reboot has it’s own continuity so that might as well be the case), and is making the conflict feel like an actual war because a bunch of other ai are helping you in large battles. Unfortunately the guy said that he’s not being to make any on rails sections because he doesn’t really like them (entirely free range). It’s a mod for Freespace using the Freespace open engine (open source engine so it’s 100% free). You can use different ships in the levels. Hopefully he adds the ability to swap characters.
There’s this other guy called Esphirian who’s making a reimagining of Adventures. In terms of gameplay it looks like a mix between Assault and Adventures, but with an open world taking some inspiration from BOTW. I’ve talked with the guy in the comments, and he has some cool ideas for the story. Let’s hope that Nintendo doesn’t stomp either of these.

It really depends if Nintendo ever recognizes Krystal again. I assume because she is an assist trophy in Smash Bros that they haven't completely written her out of history. It also depends on if they have faith in Star Fox still. Miyamoto seemed really disappointed in an interview about Star Fox Zero, saying something like, "I wanted to do something different with them, but I guess not everything works out." I think if Nintendo handles it themselves or the right studio gets the green light, then it's possible. That's why I said in this video the bit about the "internet majority". I feel like to be a Star Fox fan of anything but Starlink is to be a minority opinion. So many people don't even know about Assault and dismiss it before looking into what it did, claiming everything after Star Fox 64 was a mistake. Some even say that about 64, believing only the SNES original to be good. So for the majority crowd of haters to gush over Starlink is both hopeful and terrifying.

It missed lots of enemies. That's a key to the starfox feel. The game feels empty plus the lack of enemy diversity. Enemy diversity is around 15% of where it should be. I get that with more merch sales it would have expanded as it got popular so sadly the timing was off (and pandemic afterwards did not help).
Where it worked for breath of the wild does not necessarily work for starfox. Or atleast would be balanced out with more things to do or different things/puzzles to do per planet. The environment design is pretty good.
I actually didn't mind the dlc/toys as they were fun to collect and relatively cheap. The way the ship moves and mods were great and the cutscenes were amazing. Also having multiple toys- you can stack like 3 wings on both sides which each wing having it's specific element (speed, defense, energy, etc).

Every plant and space area should have their own unique enemy types as well as having something similar to botw blood moon to respond enemies that you killed. It's kind of annoying flying by an outlaw base that you took out a while ago and they didn't respond in. Some goes for the missions as it would have been cool being able to fight star wolf again. If there was a mission select screen that allows you to replay any level of your choosing to get better scores and money.
It have been awsome if the materials that you find all over world could actually be used to upgrade or to build ships and weapons rather then simply selling them. Which now that I wrote that feels like a great way to remove the toys to life gimmick while adding more stuff to do in the game.

Update: I just learned that if you fly into the area where you fought wolf the first time he would spawn in with other enemies. So that's cool.

Starlink makes me sad because it had the potential to be such a great game. It just needed more variety on the missions, like maybe there could be many type of monsters on the planet instead of that same scorpion like monster. Same goes for the big battleships on space and those towers you have to destroy on the planet. If it wasnt the same things over and over again, it would have much more potential.
Some dogfighting on the planets would be cool tho, instead of being near the ground all the time.

The star fox missons in starlink was still a better experience than what Zero gave us.

Loving the uptick in edited content Bill! I still need to pick this up on deep sale at some point just for the Star Fox content. I really doubt Nintendo would make Star Fox toys to life considering that's a largely dead genre, but, they've made dumber decisions. Forever hoping for a proper Star Fox sequel!

Let's hope not, as far as the toys gimmick and the human side show. I feel this was all more of Nintendo testing the public after Star Fox Zero got so much hate. Their next move following the positive reaction to Starlink will define everything - let's hope it's the right move. Starlink isn't the pinnacle of the series at all, so I'd hope someone on staff is logical enough to see that, but still understand how to incorporate the good parts.

Care to elaborate? Am I overestimating the value of people on the internet thinking this game is better than it actually is?
