As for Bob's claim that Howdy was replaced by "I MARRIED JOAN" repeats, that applied after the daily afternoon version of the show moved to Saturday mornings in June 1956. When the Saturday show finally ended in September 1960, Shari Lewis replaced him.

There are no kinescopes of the first edition of "PUPPET PLAYHOUSE" (as "HOWDY DOODY" was originally presented as); the earliest known "kinnie" dates from June 1948, after Howdy's original appearance had been given a "makeover", due to original puppeteer Frank Paris abruptly leaving the show that April. "Princess SummerFallWinterSpring" became a live character {Judy Tyler} in 1951.

Keeshan was Clarabelle until 1952. Bobby Nicholson and Lew Anderson were later versions of Clarabelle.
Oddly, Lewis and Smith died three days apart in 1998.
I believe that Tyler started playing the Princess in late 1950 and was done with it in 1953.
