  • In September 2022, Burger King owner Restaurant Brands International announced the chain’s $400 million Reclaim the Flame plan. Now the No. 3 burger chain behind McDonald’s and Wendy’s, Burger King is pouring $150 million into advertising and digital investments to “Fuel the Flame” and $250 million toward a “Royal Reset” involving restaurant technology, equipment and remodels, and relocations. In connection with the big revamp, the company also hired two former Domino’s executives: Tom Curtis, Burger King U.S. president, and Patrick Doyle, executive chair of RBI. Wendy’s snatched the No. 2 spot from the chain in 2021 after years of declining sales due to complex menu items, outdated restaurants and slow operations. BK profits fell about 20% from 2019 through 2022. It remains to be seen if the overhaul will be enough to put the mother of the Whopper back into the burger supremacy race.

    I think BKs problems are mostly with their franchisees. Most BKs are poorly run, dirty, under staffed. Their food is ok with the expectation that they're fast food, but the restaurant experience is underwhelming.

      Yeah also they don’t have a niche. They used to be the discount one, but now Wendy’s has taken a lot of that market with 4 for 4/biggie bag deals.
      If you want consistency and app integration McDonald’s is better
      If you want quality there’s almost any other place is better than BK.

      I have to agree! There are so many I have walked into, that smelled like they have sewer grease problem. The other is once you take a flame broiled burger and put it in a steam table for holding, along with a bun, it becomes a soggy tasteless mess. I use to love BK as a kid, with the messaging "HAVE IT YOUR WAY"! Freshness was key as well. Today it is no longer that way.

    They should do what Dominos did, admit that their food has gone downhill and show how they are going to improve it. Offer deep discounts for a while to regain customers to see how much better they have gotten. Nobody cares about window-dressing remodels. Just keep the place clean and well run.

    Fast food in general has gotten too overpriced, but BK's big issue is not directing their franchise owners to run their places better. Our town's stores are kind of dirty and understaffed. I've been told the franchise owner refuses to pay what other places are, so simply can't get people to stay. So service is often slow, and often it's only the drive throughs running. Also, the menu is endlessly changing, and the marketing trick I personally hate, not showing prices, also turns me away. Corporate needs to assess their franchisees in order to improve the places they have, simply closing poor performers won't improve anything.

    The problem with BK wasn't the food, well it was the food when it made improperly, but the real problem was the franchising. The franchise's did not adhere to the policies of corporate when it came to maintenance and staffing. I live in a affluent community and our nearest BK, a franchise, closed it doors years ago. When you went it, you had Bebe's kids working, screaming and carrying on behind the counter. The store was dirty the windows were dirty and as others have mentioned, the burgers were microwaved, even though the "flame broiler" was perfectly functional. Just recently I found a location that was corporately owned and it was a STARK difference. The staff was friendly, the store was clean and the food was proper. The fries were hot and fresh and the burgers had obviously just been run through the broilers.

    As someone who is a franchisee (not BK) I personally think a lot of these issues stem from the former CEO who did the heavy disocunting which cut franchisee profits. If you are not making money then you cannot afford to invest into your restaurant or hire more staff. Also during the period of heavy discounting food cost increased rapidly due to new suppliers to be inline with RBI's suppliers. Then BK was sold to RBI. They made no investment into the brand, they did not support franchisees but instead increased costs and fees. Thus leaving even less profit for franchsees.

    • @efflux
      @efflux 3 месяца назад

      Interesting, that makes total sense. The plan/investment outlined in this video isn't going to work either. They can clean up a small percentage of their stores, and sink 150 million into marketing gimmicks and tech, but the underlying problem is still there... lack of quality food for a reasonable price. Cheaper doesn't always mean better, but who knows what they're going to come up with.

    It's interesting to hear about the Burger King experience in the US vs in other countries. Here in South Africa for example, the customer service at Burger King is quite good. The staff are friendly and attentive. On one occasion there was a mistake with my order in store. When I raised it, the staff member who made the mistake came out and gave me a free portion of fries to make up for it.
    In contrast at McDonalds, while far more popular than BK in South Africa, the service is poor. I went there once on a Friday night and they couldn't take any orders with the computer because the "system was broken". I ended up waiting almost an hour. Not to mention one time the tomatoes in my chicken foldover were green.
    BK is still my favourite, and they're cheaper than McDonald's too.

    The secret to their success will be to improve the quality and taste of the whopper. right now the whopper taste like some thing that was partially grilled over some kind of a flame and then microwaved for service. It is really flavorless. I first started going to Burger King in the mid-1960s. When you came in the restaurant then, there was a big broiler, running down the middle of the restaurant. You came in and placed your order, and someone took a fresh patty and put it on the grill, and it made its way across the length of the broiler. wow that was going on. Somebody was putting the toppings on your bun. By the time the burger made it through the broiler all they had to do was take the Patti out put it on your bun and wrap it up. It was extremely hot and fresh, and actually tasted like a flame grilled burger. It was outstanding and I ate there a ton. I was in high school then and drop by whenever I had an opportunity. What they’re serving today taste nothing like I remember that burger tasting. I just can’t get the feeling that the meat has been pre-cooked somewhere and then just heated for service. I wish them luck because I have I have always liked a good flame grilled burger. That’s the main thing they need to concentrate on and not all the advertising and re-branding. They need to figure out a way to get back to the actual flame. Grilled hot off the grill burger. Good luck to Burger King. There is one about a half a mile from my house and I don’t ever eat there because the product is just not any good.

Burger King can’t deliver because their chicken nuggets are trash. if my friends want to eat a mcchiccken or mcdouble cheeseburger equivalent at mcdonald’s or wendy’s they will be set for $6 at mcd and the 2 for $5 at wendy’s. the burger king equivalents to a mcchicken or mcdouble cheeseburger are rubbish. the smallest sandwich affordable value that burger king has is the whopper jr, but it will always leave you feeling fatter and greasier than the rivals.

    It's as though the franchise owners are content with the few bucks that they make from their dying restaurant and don't care to address any issues. The Burger King near me is so understaffed, they only do drive through and online orders anymore. The lobby used to be open, and now it may open one day a week. The food is almost always not hot, sometimes room temperature or less.
    The issue is, had the company simply tightened the very loose screws of proper business management, the employees had pride in their work, and been paid better, this would not be a "comeback."
    To quote LL Cool J, "Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years."
    This is a lesson in poor business management, hiring workers who don't work, and lack of making a quality product is a staple reason they are on the back foot trying to go forward.

  • @user-rj4vr2sc2d
    @user-rj4vr2sc2d 9 месяцев назад +1

    The reason I don't go to Burger King is simple: they never open their damn lobby! When COVID happened, every fast food place locked their doors and forced customers to the drive thru. No longer could you go in, use the bathroom, stretch your legs, etc. Since the pandemic ended, many places reopened their doors, but places like Burger King, Wendy's, and Carl's Jr are extremely inconsistent. You'll go one day and the doors are open, then the next day and it's drive-thru only. And they never put up a sign saying the doors are locked, so you waste your time parking and getting out of the car. If I can't access your business on a reliable basis, I'm not showing up. I can go to Chick-fil-A and I know exactly when the doors open and doors closed. No surprises, no complication.

    The closest one is horrendous. A drive thru that once your in, you can't leave. I have literally sat once for 30 minutes in line; no way to get out. Started going inside and the skeleton crew staff didn't even speak English. Somehow wanted to charge almost $15 for a whopper meal even though its advertised around $9.50.
    The other one...total opposite. Fresh made food, clean restaurant, just a much better experience.

As for food quality I only noticed some slight bits of chicken portion sizes again "slight" difference for the their crispy chicken sandwiches at different locations sometimes. Their food is fairly consistent and only the amount sauce added to a sandwich varies. Taste is pretty much the same everywhere and you can ask for something fresh or "OB" might be the professional term when you want it fresh and tasty. Once I tried the Dave's Single I instantly thought it tasted like a Whopper, it does have similar ingredients, but it looked much better. I would say look at the path of many of these companies that have come under the umbrella of the parent company. Popeyes used to be a great restaurant but has seriously declined since being bought. Prices have increased and portions have grown much smaller. A tender meal is nearly $15 without a drink and the tenders are the size of a finger. The classic chicken is now 90% breading with very little meat. All while spending $40 to $50 for a family meal.

      RBI/Tim Hortons is the WRONG Parent Company for BK. For MANY Years up until I was in first grade, Burger King was parent owned by Pillsbury. Pillsbury sold them to Guinness/Heineken in October 1988 because McDonalds kept intentionally SABOTAGING its competitors by ZONING Neighborhoods. Back when I worked at BK in 1999, Guinness/Heineken made sure BK still tasted great. BK got sold to Tim Hortons because Guinness had sold Burger King to a Private Equity Firm in 2002, Hortons brought that firm in 2005 which also owned Popeyes(AFC Sold Popeyes in 2004).

They can serve two cars in the drive thru, while Chic Fil A can serve 25 - 30 in the same time. McDonalds is incredibly consistent. In the past, they were all over the place, but eventually became consistently good. You went to a McDonalds and almost always got exactly what you expected, well, if you didn't order ice cream. It's pretty impressive. I can't ever recall having an issue with McDonalds that was the employees' fault, even if it was a mistake. The only time was when another customer took my order, which isn't on them
    Burger King is hit-or-miss, but luckily, it's location-dependent. There's good BKs and bad ones. This means if you go to a Burger King and everything was good, if you go there next week, you can expect good quality. The one here is overall good. I like it because it's fast, but the Whoppers are sometimes cold, but still good quality. Their staff though has been really professional

    Burger king had a 2 for $5 promotion or something like that recently where you could pick between a regular whopper and a standard chicken sandwich or double up on the same item. I wanted 2 whoppers and the guy at the drive through window told me that I couldn't do that and that I had to get one of each which I thought was weird and a mistake, but I didn't press the matter. IDK if he didn't know how to put it in the system or something but needless to say I decided to just go somewhere else for a hamburger and it was just another reason to remind me why I eat Burger King so infrequently. If I had to guess I'd say I think I've eaten there less than 10 times since 2010.
    A somewhat funny story about the time before last when I visited Burger King occurred back in 2019. I'd ordered my food smoothly this time while going through the drive through and when I pulled up to the window the first thing out the guy working there's mouth was literally "Man your car is dirty as crap." Only he actually said the "s word" and not "crap". He caught me of guard but did offer a tip on how to fix it which was basically throw a particular soap or cleaner over you car before it rains and the rain will clean your car for you (not sure if his suggestion was great for the environment though) , so great customer service as per usual BK! I was in college at the time and parked my car outside which caused rain spots all over it which led to that interaction.

    I applied at Burger King in Campbell, CA as soon as I turned 16 years of age back in 2000. One of the best methods to make any good burgers at Burger King was “off the broiler” meaning they will cook the meat patties when you make your order instead of using ones already been cooked in the meat warmer. It takes a bit longer for your order to finish, but trust me, the burger will taste much better. Of course this was 23 years ago, not sure about today.
    One of the things I hated about working there was the cheapskate manager. He always made us asked “how many ketchup would you like?” Every time a customer asked for ketchup. You had to give exact amount the customer requested. When he was not around, I just grabbed a hand full and dropped them off in the bag or on the tray when got asked for ketchup. Dude, ain’t nobody got time to count each one.

The meat/sandwich is then microwaved to temperature when the order is place. I have requested a fresh off the broiler whopper a few times and the counter person looks at me like DAAAAAA, they are all fresh off the broiler. But the when you look back in the kitchen you see the meat patty taken out of a pan, put on the sandwich and then microwaved you know this is not " fresh off the broiler ".

    It is interesting to hear about the differences between BK in the US and internationally. In high cost nations like Scandinavia, where they pay their staff fairly well, the service level is always good, the food is ample in size and good in quality, and as far as I know these operations are financially very successful too. If the US part of the branch wants inspiration look at what they are doing abroad. Apart from that, eliminating a few of the menu items might be in order, or at least place their traditional big sellers on the top of any menu system would be my advice.

The franchises need to be held more accountable on management, cleanliness, staffing, quality of service/food of the locations. Bk also needs to make the food healthier but not change the menu but add to it. They also need to make more things fresh. So many things sit in warmers and quality drops and sucks.
