  • 07/08/2023 Des Moines and Avon, Ia. Avon is located on the South East side of Des Moines. Here a large facility is used for handling wind turbine components. There is also a large grain elevator located here. The South bound grain train ended up being delayed because of switch maintenance. After visiting Avon I flew the drone over the UP Shortline rail yard. This yard was once CNW and before that the Rock Island! Caught a local farmer harvesting some rye near my house. Very different process compared to picking corn! 07/09/2023 Winthrop, Ia. A rare catch for me, the East bound CN M338. This train is dispatched from Waterloo, Ia. and I caught it with the drone and gave chase!

@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 yeah, we all have to work to be able to afford our "toys"........my nextdoor neighbor lost his 14,500 gallon above ground pool a week ago, when a side panel gave way from rusting out, but he still has his Harley and other adult toys. I am content to have some old riding mowers to play around with, and am turning one into a "mini-monster-truck-mower". It will be more for fun than anything else.

50 years ago, I covered the yard checker job in the Rock Island’s Short Line Yard. Best. Job. Ever. Then again, walking down between two tracks that weren’t that well maintained meant that sometimes the cars on adjacent tracks leaned towards each other making it a tight squeeze to get through. And then I heard the slack being taken on one of the tracks and as I didn’t know which track, I didn’t know which cars to move away from which made for some anxious moments.

Thanks Red. Did not know NS and BNSF were in Des Moines now, all I ever saw was C & NW, Rock Island, and CGW. There is another yard closer to downtown, I guess it's still quite active.
I researched trains in Florida, turns out, there's a lot of freight trains over in Tampa, which is about 30 miles from where we live. The Port of Tampa is a destination for a lot of inbound and outbound freight. CSX has a huge yard, not in the Port, it's by Orient Road.
Should you want to get away from Iowa, round about January, when it's an honest 10 below zero, and 40 below with the wind-chill factor...drop in, make a Trains in The Tropics video....

@@nickpaglia543 the Wabash started out as the Northern Cross in the late 1830s, running from Springfield Illinois, to Meredosia, on the Illinois River. After several bankruptcies, takeovers, and reorganizations, it finally became the Wabash, running from Detroit Michigan, to Kansas City on the west, and to Buffalo New York on the east. The Buffalo line went through Canada, and was a joint operation with Canadian National. At Decatur Illinois, the Wabash split, and had two different routes to Kansas City, one line went through Springfield, utilizing the original Northern Cross right-of-way, and the other went southwest to St. Louis, and joined the Springfield line west of there. There were numerous branches on the Wabash, including the one to Des Moines, Iowa. A portion of the Northern Cross right-of-way now serves as a bike & hike trail on Springfields southwest side.

Morning Red! I've caught a windmill train once at night, it's on my channel. That's a massive wind turbine yard, interesting to see all the individual parts and man those were some heavy duty trailers for the tower parts of the windmill. Cool yard work with the drone, we have a fairly big container CN yard in Brampton Ontario but not as big as that. The CP yard in Vaughan is closer to that UP yard there. Sure was a lot of power on the first stack train and she was moving! I'm really digging the farm action buddy! It's really cool to see how they do their fields. So I have a question...if a CN train starts out in say Ontario, does the crew switch out or do they do the entire run? Great video as always buddy. Cheers from Ontario 🇨🇦
