  • In Des Moines for my grandson's basketball tournament. So I was able to get a few short sessions at UP's Short Line Jct. area. Which I haven't been to since CNW days in the very early 90's, a lot has changed as you might expect. First is an NS unit just west of the UP yard. I caught two power moves on two separate days, a SB Stack on the former Rock Island Spine Line. Plus a three window SD60M working with an SD40N as yard switchers, doesn't get much better. Thanks for watching comment like and subscribe.

We don’t get to see the Black (NS) Stallions too often on your Channel and the Old Horses were a Sweet sight. 👍

I model railroad NS and N&W since my Dad and I both worked on the N&W and my Dad NS also after the merger. When I go home to Cincinnati then I try to film the NS lines, hard to do here on a consistent basis. Thanks Ken!

Nice catches! A correction to make, in the opening scene of the video. The NS unit is at the old Des Moines Union Railway yard which was previously jointed operated by the Milwaukee Road and the Wabash Railroad. In 1993, NS abandoned their line between Moberly, MO to Albia, IA and formed a agreement with the BN which NS serves the Des Moines industries and BN later BNSF hauls the freight to St Louis. NS operations are based out of Glake Yard on the southeast side of Des Moines. I caught NS operations a few times last year which i found interesting

This unit was a stones throw from the UP at a grain elevator. I didn't need to go 1/4 mile to see him. Thanks for the history lesson, I did know that already I am an NS fan and my Dad worked for NS. Apparently this job tied up there for the weekend. If you look at the video you will see two old switchers for the elevator next to the NS unit. No problem, Lol!

Your welcome @@jefftoft5568! I didn’t know your dad worked on the NS. I also the two old switchers are the grain elevator switchers which NS serves the faculty and has it run over IAIS rails to Peoria, from there these trains go to markets in the eastern US. The old DMU yard is where NS interchanges with the IAIS and UP.

Rock Island first, then CNW when the Rock went belly up.

  • @AJmx2702001

The Rock Island many times built later to a destination, and did not have the best route. The eventual 'Spine Line' from MSP to KC that the UP now owns was one of the better routes, but it did not find it's full potential until late in the Rock's life. There was a lot of duplication in Iowa, and the Rock many times was the odd man out. But the Spine Line, Chicago to Omaha line and the Tucumcari line actually did work out despite all the Rocks Problems . And it was the only railroad offering proper service to this city of a quarter million in Des Moines . Certainly better service than the Milwaukee, Burlington, C&NW and Wabash(N&W). The Rock was always thought of as Iowa's railroad

UP using the SD60m's must be having a power shortage.

Great train action, but like most of your cool videos the wind and distortion sound drives me up the freaking wall. Mute only

Thanks, but living in the Midwest wind is almost everyday thing so mute away! I'm not happy with it either.
