If you think X gives advantage over Y, so it should be banned, then make tournament play hickory club only. I would be VERY interested to see you play with this on a couple full rounds of golf. As several people have noted, putting seems to be the most inconsistent part of your game. If you're already doing that well with it, I can see it being quite transformative.

One thing that should be factored into the test is that on the 8ft putts you used the standard putter first. When you used the Armlock, you had a good idea of the exact line into the hole; slightly left of centre. You put things right on the 40ft test by using the putters alternatively and the results were pretty evenly balanced. Likewise the 9 hole challenge resulted in an even split. I'll stick with my scotty cameron. Very interesting video, keep up the good work.
I’d go with the arm lock just by looking at the rolls of your short putt test. However, a bit of randomization would’ve been nice for the testing methods. You went with traditional first most of the time which meant you knew the breaks and speeds before using the arm lock, just a thought.

Switched to a Bettinardi armlock this year and won’t be going back. Like you Rick I discovered I was more wrist putting than I had realised. The 6’ and in range is almost automatic now which give huge confidence to fire at the middle of greens if the pin is tricky. Great video.
I think the pro's should be handed a set of NorthWestern 7 piece sets from Canadian Tire at the beginning of the week at the tournies and have at it :)...
I bought a NWestern lob-wedge from KMart in the late 80s when I started looping and the 60* was the latest thing. I used that until I wore out the bounce...

Been armlocking for 1 year and it took time to dial it in. These are the 3 main things: 1- Putter length to match your height and preferred posture. I tried both 40” and 42” and longer was better for me. I’m 5-10 and like to be more upright at address. 2- Ball position. I found much more consistency and results with the ball on the back foot. Playing off the front sometimes exceeded my natural free swing motion and led to muscling or yips. 3- Putter grip. A lot have long and thin pistol grips, had issues in humidity and heat with sweat slipping off and in cold/rain when I wore sleeves. Went to the Bryson special JumboMax 17 and that solved every issue. Also takes more strain off the contorted left wrist. Cheers. Good video as always!
I've been putting in this style for more than 20 years now. I use a regular putter (no special length or grip), but I'm leaned a bit more over the ball as it helps me see the line better. I modeled my style after one of Bernhard Langer's 50 styles of putting over the years.
Great video Rick. Recently broke out my old belly putter and have been playing around with using it as an armlock and I agree with the discomfort in the wrist.
Big questions are : Can I get my current putter regripped with this arm lock grip? If so, will the face of my putter at impact be too aggressively delofted? Is the arm lock putter slightly lofted to compensate for the forward angled slope of the shaft at impact?

It’s certainly taking the wrists out of things, but the two points everyone needs to remember is you still have to pick the correct line and pace, whatever the putter you have in your hands (or arms!)

Honestly. After using a club like this, I live them. For me, all it does is remind me to keep my arm straight and elbow facing my target. Since you hands stay connected, there isn't any point where your hands are experiencing movement in different directions, or between a point. Technically, this breaks no rules.
I will never understand some of the rules. They have equipment to hit the ball a mile, but you worried about the tip of the end of the stick touching the body? It's silly really. If something was an advantage, EVERYbody would be doing it. You dont' see wooden drivers anymore...

I've been using one for about a month now. Definitely more consistent stroke which results in a more consistent role. As you mentioned it takes the wrist flip out. The fact that you putted as good or better on your first go should tell you something. Put it in the bag.
I feel like the armlock biggest benefit is the short putt to make sure you strike it straight as possible where slight angles on such low ball speeds can alter the bounce/path of the ball. Long putts matter more on the read and appropriate force exerted, making sure you get it close enough to two-putt. Think it’s better to test how squared and how much deviation on swing path on armlock vs traditional putters create on average.
Rick, as usual great video. I might like to see you use different color balls when you alternate shots with two putters like you did here. The visual would be good for determining how each putter preforms.
I'm glad that you are actually testing the club out beforehand. I watched a few videos recently (such as the one where you play St. Andrews backwards with hickory clubs) where you apparently hit your shots cold. I just think...well, this isn't going to start well...
I personally think all the putters should be allowed. The game is hard enough, even for the pros. I don't belive folks using these putters won at the winning percentage Tiger did all of a sudden.
On my birthday (52nd) this past August, I got a Biomech Ace putter. It’s also an armlock putter and looks really weird. But, after getting used to the “robotic” feel and sound….I’ve been draining more putts. My playing partners aren’t laughing anymore. Try it out….I’d love to see what your take on it is. Question - can you turn any putter into an armlock? Are they weighted differently? I noticed the armlock had an offset shaft (is that needed). Or could I add a shaft extension and a new grip to turn my putter into an armlock style putter?
i thought i'd like arm lock putters until i tried one. had similar issues to rick where i felt like i was so focused on keeping it locked that my hand/wrist would cramp up from the 'squeeze'. got a standard putter and haven't looked back.

Hi Rick; I noticed when putting, it seemed that the putter actually swung in a vertical arc rather than low to the ground & actually hit the ball on an upswing. Does it not make the ball roll off the face rather than skid before it rolls with the low to the ground stroke? Which do you teach?
Why ban a club that everyone has the opportunity to use. If it’s such an advantage, then use it 🤷🏻♂️. I think it should stay, and I would be really interested to give it a go myself.
Why not make the hole 4 times the size of everyone can play it? Because golf is a game and the point isn’t to make it as easy as possible, it’s to enjoy the challenge.

@@HarryProffitt No I don't agree that those things make the game more enjoyable - driver heads should still be wooden. There is a point in time in which the tech makes the game too easy and fundementally changes it - golf is way past that but because there's money in club manufacture it keeps getting pushed. Other games like baseball had the sense not to swap to high tech aluminium bats just because they hit further - they leave that shit for little kids and womens leagues. What does hitting further with drivers really get us? Every course either becomes a pitch and putt or else they lengthen courses - and then I'm walking further to play the same shots that just travel a bit further while spending more money on clubs. And I'm supposed to be impressed with that and find it enjoyable? Before you think I'm some geezer I'm 29 and have only played a few years and when I play socially I always use persimmon woods and old irons and a simple putter - it is more enjoyable to me and the feel is way better. It's really not that hard - if it was golf wouldn't have been popular all this time. With new drivers you don't even have to middle it. I also don't agree that making everything high tech and easy af helps grow the game. How the f does having more expensive clubs grow the game or having more matinence fees for members because of bigger courses make people wanna become members? It doesn't. People that don't know anything about golf aren't playing because of 460cc drivers with adjustable weight and swivel heads, only some golf nerd would think that. That kind of tech has it's place but it's place is allowing senior citezens to keep playing as their physicality designs or for women to play with especially if it's mixed company. No normal man or teenage boy needs that shit to enjoy golf.

it is an advantage, and everyone should be using either the evenroll or the bettinardi, but many are set in their ways for whatever reason, and would rather stay with whatever they are used to.
Rick, I've used arm lock for years and use the Arm Lock Golf grips that turn belly putters into armlock putters. What I found in using those grips is that you have to change your left hand position on it. You can't really keep it in the "life line" in the palm of your hand. I found that if you roll your left hand clockwise just a bit, it was a lot more comfortable. That maybe the issue with your pain. I love arm locking though and whenever I feel like I can't start the ball on line, I always go back to an arm lock to get the feel back. Hope to see it in your bag though!!!
Xander Schauffele uses it but thinks they should be banned. “I am for banning the armlock putters, but if everyone else is going to use it, and I feel like they have a bigger advantage, I may as well do the same.
i'd like to try one. i could even make one out of a spare alternate putter with an extension and a doubled up grip, would have to most likely mess around with head weight.

I've just bought a 41" armlock but being 6'3" with back problems, I use it normal style but standing more upright. Still getting used to it but my putting is improving with every hole
I bought an Evnroll ER11 Midlock a month ago and after 2 weeks of practice the putter is fantastic. One tip that worked for me was to practice with a metronome to tune in tempo, especially on longer putts.
I think what you said about realizing that you are a bit of a wrist flicky putter is a big reason why you should stick with a putter like this..develope a repeatable putting stroke and build your putting confidence..I now will go out and get one and do the same

Hi Rick; I noticed when putting, it seemed that the putter actually swung in a vertical arc rather than low to the ground & actually hit the ball on an upswing. Does it not make the ball roll off the face rather than skid before it rolls with the low to the ground stroke? Which do you teach?

I bought this putter about a month ago and I love it. Much more confident on short putts, I feel like I can't miss.
Why ban a club that everyone has the opportunity to use. If it’s such an advantage, then use it 🤷🏻♂️. I think it should stay, and I would be really interested to give it a go myself.
Why not make the hole 4 times the size of everyone can play it?
Because golf is a game and the point isn’t to make it as easy as possible, it’s to enjoy the challenge.

What about drivers where you can adjust the weight in the head? All designs that make the game easier and more enjoyable for both the average and elite golfer. Surely the more enjoyable the game is, and the better peoples golf can be, the more people we can get involved in the sport? 🤷🏻♂️
@@HarryProffitt No I don't agree that those things make the game more enjoyable - driver heads should still be wooden. There is a point in time in which the tech makes the game too easy and fundementally changes it - golf is way past that but because there's money in club manufacture it keeps getting pushed. Other games like baseball had the sense not to swap to high tech aluminium bats just because they hit further - they leave that shit for little kids and womens leagues.
What does hitting further with drivers really get us? Every course either becomes a pitch and putt or else they lengthen courses - and then I'm walking further to play the same shots that just travel a bit further while spending more money on clubs. And I'm supposed to be impressed with that and find it enjoyable?
Before you think I'm some geezer I'm 29 and have only played a few years and when I play socially I always use persimmon woods and old irons and a simple putter - it is more enjoyable to me and the feel is way better. It's really not that hard - if it was golf wouldn't have been popular all this time. With new drivers you don't even have to middle it. I also don't agree that making everything high tech and easy af helps grow the game. How the f does having more expensive clubs grow the game or having more matinence fees for members because of bigger courses make people wanna become members? It doesn't. People that don't know anything about golf aren't playing because of 460cc drivers with adjustable weight and swivel heads, only some golf nerd would think that. That kind of tech has it's place but it's place is allowing senior citezens to keep playing as their physicality designs or for women to play with especially if it's mixed company. No normal man or teenage boy needs that shit to enjoy golf.
I've got the same putter and it's brilliant! I consider myself a good putter but do get nervy on short puts sometimes..not with this putter
I dont know why there is a debate on this especially for the pro level. I haven't seen someone who was absolutely a terrible putter now rolling everything in
Bryson.... his putting pre arm lock was terrible. Post he became one of the best putters. I mean he was so bad before he was even trying things like that side saddle straight shaft technique lol if you Havnt seen it look it up

Rick would you recommend a 15 or 18 handicap this method of arm lock or no shouldn't touch it? rn I use the way you do in putting and putting is quite solid.

it is an advantage, and everyone should be using either the evenroll or the bettinardi, but many are set in their ways for whatever reason, and would rather stay with whatever they are used to.
That’s an idiotic statement. Not “everyone” was using an anchored putter before it was banned.

In 5-10 years most pros will use armlock. They just haven’t made the switch
Rick, I've used arm lock for years and use the Arm Lock Golf grips that turn belly putters into armlock putters. What I found in using those grips is that you have to change your left hand position on it. You can't really keep it in the "life line" in the palm of your hand. I found that if you roll your left hand clockwise just a bit, it was a lot more comfortable. That maybe the issue with your pain. I love arm locking though and whenever I feel like I can't start the ball on line, I always go back to an arm lock to get the feel back. Hope to see it in your bag though!!!

For me, it all comes down to that 6 inch putter between my ears. I've heard it said that golf is 90% mental and the other 10% is mental.
i'd like to try one. i could even make one out of a spare alternate putter with an extension and a doubled up grip, would have to most likely mess around with head weight.

hi rick. hockey player here and new golfer. im finding holding the putter like a hockey stick (laugh at me its ok) feels better since im use to it. but struggling to find a left handed belly putter. any advice? 40" looks perfect but no one seems to make them lh

I've just bought a 41" armlock but being 6'3" with back problems, I use it normal style but standing more upright. Still getting used to it but my putting is improving with every hole
I bought an Evnroll ER11 Midlock a month ago and after 2 weeks of practice the putter is fantastic. One tip that worked for me was to practice with a metronome to tune in tempo, especially on longer putts.

I think what you said about realizing that you are a bit of a wrist flicky putter is a big reason why you should stick with a putter like this..develope a repeatable putting stroke and build your putting confidence..I now will go out and get one and do the same
