R.I.P. James Best !! One of my favorite actors ever too bad most people don't realize he was way more than just Rosco P. Coltrane on Dukes of Hazard. He had tons of movies and television shows under his belt. 187 in total. You'll be missed good buddy !!!
johnorlitta I've seen this episode countless times and it never dawned on me until today that this was the same guy that played Roscoe. I knew he looked familiar, but I just couldn't place him before. Now it's so obvious. Boy, do I feel like a fool.
I grew up in a "Modern Day Mayberry" (Needham, Massachusetts). The whole downtown section is just like Mayberry. You have the Town Hall, which has the mayor, police, and county clerk inside. The Police spend more time in their station than on the street, because nobody commits crimes. In walking distance of the Town Hall was a barber shop, pharmacy, ice cream parlor, a five and ten store (Woolworth) that had a diner in it. There was also a hardware store, fix it shop, a double feature movie theater, and a privately owned department store (Like Weaver's) and an Italian restaurant and also a pizza place. The doctor and dentist were also there too. It was a dry town, so no liquor could be sold. It's the only town I ever lived where people say how much they loved the schools, teachers and principals. Great neighbors too. They would do anything for you if you needed help. The problem is that over time, this "ultimate middle class town" started getting attention. While most towns quality start going down hill over time, Needham didn't, and it stood out more, and now it is an upper class town, because rich people covet such a great town.
Wish Mayberry was real but the closest you will get, Adam, is Andy's hometown of Mt. Airy, NC. The Snappy Lunch restaurant, famous for its pork chop sanhwhiches us actually mentioned in one episode of the show. Floyd's Barber Shop and Goober's filling station are also there. You can also buy a book of Aunt Bee's recipes and DVDs of the show it is a great day trip!
FUN FACT: Actor James Best spent more time on streets of Mayberry before the Andy Griffith show began. Best had starred in the 1959 film, 'Verboten', in which the future Mayberry exteriors served as a a German town...............
In an interview, James Best said that he couldn't play guitar worth a lick & he just winged it in this scene. RIP James "Jim Lindsey aka Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane" Best, & RIP Andy aka "Andy Taylor" Griffith. We miss you.
I had this crossover story planned out years ago, Rosco was adopted and his real name was Jim Lindsay, he went to Mayberry to find his family (instead he chickened out), and try to pursue his second dream, playing the guitar and met Sheriff Taylor. Looks like Rosco was influenced by Andy! Remember the fake stop sign, Rosco did the same thing with fire hydrants. Anyway the story starts out Bo and Luke sneaking into the courthouse, for some reason, can't remember but they hear Rosco playing a guitar and notice how good he is. Sheriff Andy and Barney come to town, and Bo compares Enos to Barney. Something along the lines of, "We can't do anything right, with Barney Fife, over there." Barney: I heard that. LOL.
Actually no... when asked by the Andy Griffith Show producers if he could play a guitar, Best replied that he had two guitars. When it was time for him to play, he had to confess he couldn't play a guitar. However, when the producers accused him of lying, he told them he didn't lie. He never said that he could play, just that he had two guitars...
I've always wondered why a piece of tape it put across Andy's Martin guitar throughout the series. I can't identify James Best's guitar (never seen that logo).. Martin even issued an Andy Griffith signed edition of it for Martin and Co. I don't think he plays live during filming judging by his hand movements. But the guitar clearly a Martin with their famous logo obscuref.
@@kenz5469 That's obvious. As a guitar player I want to know why Griffith intentionally hid the brand of his Martin guitar and I have never seen the quarter note on Best's and want to know who made it.
Rest in peace James Best, Don Knotts, and Andy Griffith. Beautiful memories.
AMEN AMEN!!!
And George Lindsey, Goober.
Being obsessed with guitars as a kid and loving this show, this was my favorite episode.

I agree, RIP my friend James.
He did a good job as an officer in the Navy in The Caine Mutiny. Not a comedy role.
This is bluegrass don't see anything black about it someone better schools all these black artists claiming country is theirs.
@toshiojohnston3732 we have a stone cold racist right here, folks ! 🤦
@@brandonio_granger if ain't African it ain't black don't believe the hype know your history about slavery and racism what does that mean anymore .
My smile of the day. An incredibly YOUNG and gorgeous Jimmie Best! ❤️
Have to agree.....James was a good looking dude ❤️.
Wow what a handsome man! He was so dreamy even as Rosco
Great episode here, The Andy Griffith show is just the greatest ever!
Four great actors gone, but we can remember them through their works. :)
Mr James Best but he,ll always be to ME,,,Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrane RIP Mr Best. Thanks for the memories.
I saw this episode today on TV Land, and recognized James Best right away.

Tim G His voice is a dead giveaway.
u r an SOB Quinton kinda thing.
rest in peace Mr. best i just loved you.
Andy Griffith had great taste in music and always found great talent for TV.
The only show where the music is not filler, but an integral part of the story and atmosphere that made Mayberry!
My favorite Andy Griffith shows are the ones that feature music
I saw him in a twilight zone episode too! The 60s were an awesome era for tv storytelling
Great memories....God rest their souls😊🌅
he will always be roscoe to me... sickem flash!!!
RIP Mr. Best.
I wish I lived in mayberry
Adam Turner it is fiction , so you can live there.....

It seems that young Roscoe was later influenced more by Deputy Fife than Sheriff Taylor. This explains it all.
Also, RIP Don Knotts. We miss you as well, of course. Very funny feller he was. Damn shame He's gone.
3rd episode ever. Watched it just this morning😂
One of my favorite.
In an interview, James Best said that he couldn't play guitar worth a lick & he just winged it in this scene. RIP James "Jim Lindsey aka Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane" Best, & RIP Andy aka "Andy Taylor" Griffith. We miss you.
That's surprising considering that James Best was a cousin of the Everly Brothers.
he could sure play the guitar.r.i.p James Best and Andy Griffith and Don Knots.
Actually, he couldn't play guitar
@@kenz5469yeah, but he one of the better pretenders at it.
I bought a pick from that store in Winston-Salem to.
Will miss you Roscoe, my favorite line was from Shenandoah... " that ain't. All you smell.. thems country boys .

One thing people forgot about known about James Best he was a very good guitar player

barney kessel actually dubbed the guitar part
Yes he was young
“Sang Barney!” 😂😂😂
I wish I knew how to play like that
Rosco and Barney Fife! WOW!!! Can Rosco ever play the guitar!
RIP Jim Lindsey
RIP Roscoe!
Princess Jammie is it possible to rest in war?

That guitar with the note on the headstock, is a Harmony Master archtop
There was also Harmony Archtone that had that same musical note headstock
❤😂🎉
Before Rosco P Coltrane
I'd like to know who was really playing?
If had that pick I'd be such a chick magnet.
Roscoe 😂
Would this style of music be classified as jazz, country western, or rockabilly?
Legendary jazz guitarist Howard Roberts doing a country studio session.
Yes. ;o)
All of the above, I’d say.
Too bad Barney could not have sung this one instead of good ol’ 14A. (Or even Juanita!)
Acoustic?
Looks like an old 40's Gretsch archtop he is "playing"
Harmony archtop
ThAts Barney Kessel actually playing. Barney K taught Roscoe how to fake it.
0:17 No Booking No prints No paperwork for the arrest ?
Sorry but I think I'd sue the town of Mayberry
You know something. I would rather be arrested by you folks than anybody I know. lol
this is not James best actually playing this I can't remember the actual guy playing the actual tunes
Jazz legend Herb Ellis was actually playing
Sounds like Les Paul.
Also sounds like Joe Maphis
It's Howard Roberts-- actual hands and playing in the close ups!
I heard it was Barney Kessell
M
James Best really couldn't play the guitar. He's faking it.
