    "Some of the best music wouldn't have been here had it not been for the pain, trauma, depression...of the artist". You can see that even in classical music, composers like Mozart or Beethoven went through tough times but those helped them create. It happens in painting, in sculpture, in architecture, in literature, in performance arts...the greatest geniuses in history have often been deeply disturbed and tormented individuals. I think great intelligence and creativity are a blessing and a course at the same time and geniuses seem very unhappy.

    I was 20 years old that Fall in 1993 when they played in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens... What a great year, Lollapalooza earlier that summer (Primus, Alice in Chains, Arrested Development, Babes in Toyland, Dinosaur Jr., Fishbone, Front 242, Rage Against the Machine and Tool.). What a time to be alive, wish he felt the same and didn't have the demons he had. I feel so old with watching these reactions but happy to know it is still cherished by most. Nirvana was great. I remember doing homework at the time and seeing the World Premier of the video on MTV. And knew it was going to be big thereafter. However, their album Bleach is better than Nevermind. Another band out of Seattle about that time was Mother Love Bone. Andrew Wood OD'd the night of their CD release. Members went on to form Pearl Jam.

    Speaking of the all the Seattle bands (grunge is only a label for bands that played very different styles of music) only Pearl Jam, Melvins and Mudhoney are still around. It was hard to see that so many people of that time died cos of their drug use. Saw Pearl Jam last year live again, but Alice In Chains is my favourite band of them all.

    Alex, let me tell you about mosh pits, I never have been in the middle of one, but I have been pretty close to where the mosh pit was and it looked crazy. Now, one concert I was at, which included the bands Helloween, Exodus and Anthrax. Anthrax was the main act, and this was in the late 1980's. Anyway a sort of mosh pit developed right behind me and I was sitting on the floor area, but there was a space behind me before the seating that went upward in the building. Anyway, I felt something going on behind me and I see a few men start moshing in a circle then started bumping into each other and started fighting. Maybe 10 involved, then security got involved and all hell broke loose. Head locks and punching and security had to sit on a few of the men till they tried to drag them out. I was a bit scared. I have been to other concerts with a mosh pit and it looks scary. I saw Anthrax another time with a mosh pit, not sure any other times. Some might think how do I like to go to heavy metal concerts when I am an introvert who also has Asperger's syndrome. I don't know, I just love the music, the beat, rhythm, melody and everything. I love Anthrax, Rush, Dream Theater, Times of Grace, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Overkill, Fates Warning and others. Don't know what it is. But don't think I would ever go into the mosh pit, but it looked scary. Thought you might get a kick out of this.

    • @beeedifferent
      @beeedifferent Год назад +1

      Interesting take, I enjoyed reading your perspective! I consider myself kind of a moshpit veteran, went into my first big moshpit when I was around 15/16 and I'm 27 now. I know it's not for everyone, but I love the culture around it so much and the energy you can put into it combined with the hard sound of metal. Most moshpits are intense but are actually not that dangerous. A lot of pushing, when someone falls they immediately get protected and lifted up by a few people, and when someone loses something, people form a wall to protect the search area and everyone begins looking for it. But I gotta admit, there are a few moshpits I'd definately stay away from. Doesn't surprise me that Anthrax would have moshpits I'd stay out of. I bet not every mosh pit at Anthrax is this aggressive, but your example sounds like a pit even I would reconsider. Anyways, just wanted to share my perspective. And most important, just enjoy metal concerts the way you'd like to, right? Everyones welcome, as long as they have a good time and not hurt other people who do not want to be hurt 😉 Rock on bro!

    • @tazyou11
      @tazyou11 Год назад +1

      @beeedifferent wow, thanks for sharing that. The one show I mentioned that a mini mosh pit developed, well the arena did not usually have heavy metal concerts. It was more for classical shows or similar. So the only way a mosh pit could happen was the way it did with just around 10 people circling the wagons kind of thing behind the floor seating. The other Anthrax show was made for that music because it had a nice area in front of the stage to mosh. That was a sea of people squished together in a way.

    It’s a weird paradox with nirvana. In the 90’s the appearance of bands looked more relatable. Just humans wearing normal clothes. That alone attracts people to be interested. Then you have songs that everyone can relate to. Brings even more attention to bands. In a odd way I understand why Kurt didn’t like popular songs cause it’s just the expectation to play it everywhere the band goes till they can’t no more and it loses the magic it had. I always like to hear other tracks on the albums live cause their equally as good as the singles in the album. I get both ways It’s a weird double edge sword with nirvana. Forever love the band and I hope he can rest peacefully. \\m//

    I feel like Kurt wasn't happy with success, but had he lived, he would have been pleased by the fact others took influence from him and added to the collective discography. Kurt himself was very open about how influenced he was by people who came before him.

    something cool here, when i was in army basic training, my senior drill seargeant went to basic training with the bassist from nirvana. one of his drill sargeants found out who he was by accident. my drill sargeant told us " i was standing next to him it was jsut us, when our drill sargeant walked out holding a magazine, he held it up to him and just said " this you" and he nodded" the drill sargeant never went off and told anyone openly about who he was, kept it on the dl to not cause a disruption. the bassist of nirvana went on to join army special forces.

    I accidentally landed in a mosh pit during Sound Garden at Lollapalooza 1992. I was 16 & I'm a 4'10" female! Not fun! I got the heck outta there as quickly as possible! As for Nirvana, I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Smells Like Teen Spirit. It just changed everything!

    Nirvana is one of my all-time favorite bands! Dave Grohl talks in his book about how Kurt was quoted as saying he wanted to be the biggest band in the world. I think he got that wish, but too much too soon. That and his drug addiction really messed with his psyche and pushed him down a dark path. It’s a damn shame. Dave also mentions how he thinks about Kurt being alive today. How he wishes Kurt could see how much happiness his music brings the world, and maybe that could have changed how things turned out.
    Edit: Foo Fighters is my favorite band of all time and I’m not certain Dave would have gone on to start FF without Kurt’s passing, but it would have been interesting to see where Kurt, Dave, and Krist would have ended up had Kurt never died and Nirvana had gone on for however much longer.

    Well... He actually did want to make Nirvana explode in the world, and he worked really hard to do it, but he didn't like when it did, and what he find out was the "dream" was actually a nightmare... and this was just one more thing to f*c& up his head at the time....

    Nirvana's popularity didn't skyrocket until after Cobain died. They were a successful band, but they got a lot more widespread mainstream radio play after he died than when they were active.

    Kurt didn't hate the song Teen Spirit so much as the type of people it brought to his shows. He went as far as to write songs about it (i.e.- In Bloom).

      if I remember right, the unplugged set was less "kurt refuses to play the hits" and more "the band wanted to play the songs that would sound good accoustic - does anyone need to hear smells like teen spirit accoustic?" and it was the right call.

    The duty of youth is to challenge corruption.
    Kurt cobain
    As an old Gen X er, Nirvana and the grunge music scene, was a welcoming voice to a stagnant generation. We were smart enough not to buy into the 80s bowel cocaine life style. Yet we all knew the game was fixed, the jobs or parents and grandparents had been being destroyed by corporate greed.😎🇺🇸
