The stone masons are true artists! What an amazing crew!
They are incredible. All of the skilled trades who work here are amazing. We're really proud of the expertise and skills they bring to this project. Thanks for your comment!
How fantastic to see so much of the Chateau still in place after such a long time with old coach and wine making artifacts.
Thanks for following our journey!
I really enjoy your weekly updates. Keep up the goodwoork.
Thank you!
Such incredible and talented artists working to restore this beautiful chateau 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you - we're very proud of the skill and the passion that they bring to their work here.
Love seeing you save the château you guys are awesome❤
Thank you - we're thrilled that you're enjoying our journey.
Watching the stone mason with his power tools, made me think of the original workmen crafting each stone by eye and hand. It would be lovely to see those stables once again with their intended occupants.
We often ponder the same questions... the incredible skills of the original craftsmen who built Chateau de Purnon at the end of 18th Century without power tools etc. Thank you for following our journey!
Do your artisans treat the wood for rot or wood worm before they are positioned in place? Are the roof slate tiles sealed with anything? Wow a shower this is monumental, it needs a glass of champagne. Thank you for your weekly videos so great to see them. 🇦🇺💕
Thank you for your question. Regarding the wood. In France, timber that is to be used for construction is classified into four types (numbered 1-4). The oak structure must be at level 4. The oak elements do not need treatment to satisfy this requirement. The sapin (fir) elements (which are the outer battens) do require a treatment to protect against insects. Both the product used and the process of application enable this wood to reach the classification required. You also asked about whether the slate tiles are sealed with anything. The short answer is no. Slate is an incredibly durable product. There is a waterproof insulation membrane that is placed under the final batten layer which is impervious. But the slates themselves are secured directly to the wood battens using copper nails. The are not sealed as such. We hope that answers your questions!
Amazing work! Saving buildings one at a time.
Thank you! We're saving as much as we can - it's a beautiful estate.
I’ve just been watching videos as the YT algorithm has presented them to me, but I’m getting confused about what’s been done & what hasn’t since I’ve watched everything (so far) out of order. I think I better go back to the beginning & follow the progress through that way. It’ll be much more satisfying, I think!
Hi @sylvanaire! We've numbered them to make some of the recent progress a little easier to follow. We hope you enjoy our journey!
That opening was phenomenal!!!
Thank you!
Love that you wrote something in the cement ❤️
Thank you! We love finding the hidden messages and signatures of previous generations concealed under layers. We hope future generations will feel the same way!
I can not wait to see this garden grow. It may just be spectacular and this is what we need right now, more beauty in the world.
What a magnificent job they do. My grandfather was a stone mason in the UK. Fine fine craftsmen.
Thank you! We agree - they are incredible craftsmen.
It is so terrific to see the building come to life.
Love it. And love the music - such clever choices. 😊
Thank you - we're thrilled that you're enjoying our adventure!
This is y’all’s FIRST shower? Talk about well earned. The tile is simply the most! Didn’t realize there was no means for bathing this whole time. Can’t wait to see the finished result.
How fast the winery structure is resurrecting. It’s mesmerizing. Inspiring for my own #lifegoals.
Congrats on the progress. 👏👏
Thank you!
You must be so excited to be getting so close to having a shower!!!
Indeed - one step at a time! We still have plenty to do. Thank you!
Where on earth does a piece of oak that size come from!
that one fell in good hands, a labor of love
Thank you!
This is such an amazing journey to be on with you all. Work that needs to be done will never cease, even when it is fully maintained as the maintenance for its upkeep will be needed for its existence, which I hope is endless.
Best wishes to all. Watching the artisans and professionals work is very impressive. Thankfully, it is deemed a historic monument. This means it will get the very best of care, but also planning and waiting for the necessary approvals can be very stressful. Best wishes again.❤
Thank you for your interest and good wishes!
You are so lucky to have such fantastic artisans working on the chateau. Can't wait to see all the progress. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you! Yes, our artisans are amazing. We're thrilled they are happy to share their work and explain what they are doing.
Merci beaucoup!
Lovely, really lovely. How you have the money to do all of this I don't know but I really enjoy following the progress.
Thank you! We've committed our life savings. But we are also being generously supported by the French Government which has a system for supporting the restoration of heritage listed buildings. We have also received philanthropic grants and support from a not-for-profit association in Australia. Check out our website if you would like to learn more www.chateaupurnon.com. Thank you for your interest in our journey!
I love watching your determination. The progress is fascinating. 👍
Thank you for your encouragement... good for our morale!
@ ….. Good thing you’re in Europe. Don’t think you could find craftsmen here in America that have the skills to replicate what the European artisans of the past did. We would have to import here in the States. 😊🙏🏻
Very interesting observation. Here in France there are also shortages of these highly skilled artisans. We hope our project will, in a small way, support these trades here in our region. Thanks for your interest.
Merci beaucoup!
It’s like the Diet Coke break avert😂😂😂😂😂😂😂6:35😂😂😂😂
The song?
Wonderful to watch the progress.
Thank you - it's wonderful for our morale!
Wow beautiful work done there!
Thank you!
Just amazing seeing this project ❤❤
Thank you. Enjoy!
Bravo.
Hello hun, I really enjoy watch the progress of the chateau so awesome. What music is that you used where the lady was singing? I love that. Kateri from Indiana US
👏👏👏👏🤗 EXELENTE
¡muchas gracias!
the v shape stones in the chai has a name. they come from Normandy and are could OPUS SPICATUM.
Opus spicatum : TECHNIQUE
TECHNICAL
Assembly of rubble stones arranged in cobs (cob apparatus, also known as fishbone).
All of this information is very useful and interesting. Opus spicatum is the Latin name. In English we often say herringbone pattern. In French 'appareil en épi' ou 'chevron motif'. Thank you everyone!
Who chooses the music? Very nice🙂
💙💙💙💙
I love your vlogs, wonderful, just wonderful. Is there any chance you could make the english translation a bit larger. I feel I'm missing out on the artisans' explanation/updates. This is not a complaint, just a desire to understand everything.
Thanks for watching our progress! Regarding the font size for the subtitles, we're afraid that the program we are using does not seem to allow us to enlarge it. In the light of your question, we will have another look this week. Thanks again for your interest in our journey.
No waterproofing of the shower area?
❤🕊️🍀👏🏻
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You have been heroic going without a shower. Baths just don’t cut it.
Quite right! We love a bath but we've been missing the decadence of a beautiful shower!
The outbuilding is a "shay" - pardon my guess at the spelling - what is it exactly? How is it correctly spelled? CC captions cal it a :chai" - not a word I know (except for tea). You installments are fascinating to watch - thank you fro them.
Thanks for your question. Yes, it's a 'chai' which is a French word for a barrel room. The grapes were pressed in a 'pressoir' and the juice was then barrelled and fermented in a chai.
Where is the flashing to protect the surrounding walls from the inevitable moisture that will be created?
If a chateau is on the historical register why was it left in such a state and not at least had some roof protection .
There are tens of thousands of heritage listed chateaux across France. It's not really possible for the heritage authorities to visually inspect them all on a regular basis. The story of how they come to be neglected is long and complicated. Chateaux are expensive to maintain and repair and French inheritance laws make it difficult to garner the financial resources to restore these buildings with each passing generation. We are thankful that we found Chateau de Purnon in time to be part of this wonderful journey to reawaken her. Thanks for your message and for following our journey.
I too admire all the artisans restoring the Chateau but my gosh I am so concerned about them breathing in that stone dust. They don’t seem to wear any PPE and all I can think of is silicosis! 😱😱
I’m wondering why the stone masons don’t wear masks
Do any of the stone masons ever wear protective breathing gear when creating the fine stone dust while working…..
My exact thoughts! My father was a bricklayer and died at 42 in 1961. He was dispatched to London from Scotland to repair blitzed buildings where we think he was exposed to asbestos. Silicosis is the next hidden hazard.
@@GadgetmummaHere in Australia dust from workers cutting artificial stone is a very big health hazard that the government is taking steps to regulate.
That shower is a thing of beauty…..even at this stage.
They must use water with the cutting and wear respirator
Please do! Have a weekly videos here, you will get new subscribers, and a very happy subscriber, meaning, ME! I absolutely love this channel ❤ 😊
Thank you for your comment. We are thrilled that you are enjoying our videos. We'll do the best we can but we have to fit in the filming and editing (and translating!) amongst all our restoration work!
How do you make your modern bathrooms resistant to mold and rot, or will you leave it to your grandchildren?
After all, you do not address how you'll make the water stop leaking into the frame of the building...
Those things are not ones they thought of back in the day...
