- A broken 4 jaw is no good. Especially an expensive one that is hard to find.
this is video 1 of a 2 videos where we try our best to repair this damaged chuck.
Ive missed everyone and I apologize for being away so long. I just had to detach from things that didn't involve my family for awhile. 2024 was a rough year for us.

My mother in law just passed away, so I understand the stress and time constraints when family members are ill. Since April when things started a major downhill slide, my wife and her family have been worried and busy with doctor visits, hospitalizations, making sure their father was ok, and just all that goes with it. So I hope that your wife gets better and that you both stay in good health.
Before I even watch this video, I want to say, Steve, we understand. You're a busy man, you can't just stop everything you HAVE to do, just to film it, for others to watch!
Now I've seen the whole video I can say, with all your other problems with family, you did the right thing! Family comes before everything, so everyone should understand, say no more.
As to the job you have done, simply superb! That is why I watch your channel, you take great care in what you do and it shows in the finished product! I have not touched any type of lathe, or any of your other tools, since I was at school some 53 yrs ago, so couldn't even attempt what you achieved ever! You never need to apologize for dealing with what life hands you Steve. If making these videos helps you deal with things, great. Otherwise, take care of yourself and then everyone else. I hope Elisabeth will get over those cluster headaches. While I haven't suffered from them, I know and have worked with numerous people that have. It made it difficult being short staffed at work but, we had some really top notch executives that saw to them financially.

I woke way too early for Saturday. Grabbed a cup-o-joe and figured I'd see what was on the RUclips. I used to have a habit of some Steve Summers every Saturday morning and to my surprise, some Steve Summers on this cold morning. Good to have some content from you. I don't pitty you but I certainly have sympathy. I hope you find some wonderful things in the midst of the rain. Thank you for sharing your craft.
I agree with what you said, no pity but the understanding that someone like Steve will work to get his life back on track, and knowing the feeling that he’ll have once he’s back in his comfort zone. Good luck with that and hopefully sooner than later.

I made a full set of 4 new screws for a chuck I got with my 9" South Bend lathe when I was in high school. The problem was the square chuck key corners had cracked and 2 of the screws had 1 or 2 sides of the wrench key hole completely broken away.
I did 2 things differently. I broached the square holes one corner at a time by running a lathe tool into the hole with the carriage and moving the cross slide in a couple dozen strokes. Then rotate the spindle a 1/4 turn to the next corner.
I also made the screws using oil hardening tool steel and heat treated the screws. Then drew the temper back to about Rockwell 45.
Your rounded corners on the broach may save you from the same broken wrench holes some day.
Sorry to hear about E's cluster headaches. As a sufferer of chronic migraine for over 30 years, the best thing you can do for her is believe her! They are real, they effect the whole body. Hopefully, the docs can find the source and/or a pharmaceutical cocktail that gives her back her quality of life.
You may call that a "square cut thread" but still looks like an "acme" thread to me, then again, I'm not a machinist either. Glad to see you're back.

Welcome back, as others have said "Family First". My cluster migraines came in cycles of about every three years. I swear they always came at the same time of day and then would disappear for years only to repeat. I haven't had them now for 12 years I wish I could tell you what changed, I don't know but it am thankful they're gone. I hope the best for Mrs.
