  • This video will compare if the Garmin g80 can perform as good as a gc quad for carry distance, clubhead speed and ball speed. I will hit a 50 degree wedge, 7 iron and driver and give my opinion on wether you should purchase one or not !

Although not as accurate with the driver, it was consistently a bit lower. So even adding 10 yards would give a very good indicator of distance.

I've been using the G80 since February. The GPS is tops, and the target practice games are fun.
It seems like it gives somewhat accurate distance, and I've used it to do impromptu gapping sessions at the range.

Got a G80 myself and it’s changed completely my practices at the range, training is so much fun now and it’s a lot more affordable than other options out there. Also played rounds with it and very accurate and helpful out on the course. Really a great option these days.

Definitely getting the G80! Seems really on it for ball speed and swing speed. Can be a tad off on carry distance, especially the longer the club, but it is doing its estimate without spin in the equation. As long as you are used to it, and know what the variances generally are, it is a great tool for the range, or hitting into a net in your yard. Awesome video, thanks!

Tried it today was hitting 6 iron 190 yards. On G80 but with crap yellow balls on driving range it was more like 150 yards. But for £400 you can’t go wrong. Now just need affordable launch monitor that shows club path and dynamic loft. Maybe in 2/3 years time. Lol.

I think the carry number is off with the driver cause the ball is not on the same plane with it being on a tee

Great test. The good thing about the g80 as it relates to the Driver is that it was always short about 10-15 yards. So if that is consistent then you can account for that. I would like to see it a bit more closer though. At least 5 yards. But for the price is very good. Plus…. It’s also a GPS.

Yea I felt like the driver distance was a little on the short side but all my other clubs seemed to line up pretty well. I can’t wait to really get into it once the weather gets better but the fact that you can Mickey Mouse a little mat and net to hit into indoors makes it so worth the money right there

Got the G80 myself, I was looking around again at the comparisons as I was worrying about club head speed . I usually just work with ball speed and this seems for you relatively accurate, and I think the same for me. I then multiply the ball speed by 1.7 to give me my carry figures and that seems to be very close to reality.

Driver distance really doesn't matter too much with this gadget (although fun), as Irons and wedges are where hitting consistent distances matter more. I can see this as a fantastic tool to help approach play from around 180 yards out but especially for the last 80 yards or so......I'm saying this as someone that needs as much help as I can get.....tempted.

I found it suggest lower yardage on the driver as well. No problem when using 3-wood of the deck, but a little elevation puts a little out. Might be the problem when using driver as well. The elevation of the peg might make it more difficult to register all the variables when hitting the driver. Else it's a great tool both on the driving range, and on the course. They should make it possible to store more than your own score, when registering others score though.

On the GC Quad, did you enter any elevation or weather conditions (not even sure if you can enter those)? Just wanted to see if that would account for the different carry numbers. Anyway, the difference seems to be relatively constant (approximately 10 to 13 yards shorter on the driver). Once you know that difference, you can just know to add ~10 yards to each drive. I just ordered the G80. Thanks so much for the compare video!

It seems like the club head speed is throwing off the carry numbers, as the ball speeds are pretty close. Is that due to the position of the G80, or is it just inaccurate? Be curious to see a third way to measure club head speed to get a better idea.

I say it for every video in this price range: If it can't measure spin, it can't get distance accurately. It's a crapshoot. If you get your spin rate near the "typical" spin rate for the club selected, then the calculated carry will be close, otherwise you'll be off a mile.

  • @bernardduffy3300

I thought that this was a great video. However, I would not have agreed with all of your conclusions or the science of the measurements that you made. You have reinforced my view that the G80 would be worth the money!
I have never used a GC Quad or a G80. I am planning to buy the G80. Intuitively, I would expect the measurements to be made from the same vantage point. The G80 was a little further back in your stance. To my mind, that must affect some of the sensors. Moreover, for the same club head speed and smash factor, the carry ought to be the same, oughtn't it? That is just physics. For the lofted iron and the seven iron, the differences were immaterial.
Off the ground, you are hitting down; but off a tee peg you are hitting up. So launch angle comes into it for the driver, surely? The G80 is measuring from a place that is a fraction further back in your stance and it must be harder for it to pick up the launch angle on the same basis as the GC Quad. A small fraction of a degree in difference will affect the carry calculation by a few yards, won't it?.
I am not a professional. However, unless there is some hazard that you need to avoid, a precise carry distance with a driver should not affect the play of the hole. As far as I know, no one can control the roll of the ball after landing a shot with a driver. That depends on ground conditions. Roll on a links will be different from roll on a parkland course. Unless you test the two machines on a real course and measure the actual distances, you are making a judgement about the quality of the machines and have assumed 100% accuracy for the GC Quad. That could be right but how certain is it?
I think that you proved that the key measurements of the G80 and the GC Quad are aligned sufficiently closely for it not to matter on most occasions. If I hit a driver expecting it to carry 237 yards and it actually carried 247, I would not be losing any sleep unless there was a hazard at 242 yards. However, would I really risk a driver and expect it to carry 247 on the basis of the GC Quad? Five yards seems too small a margin for error. I would finish in the hazard as often as not. Either it would involve a different line of play for the tee shot or it would be the three wood off the tee. Plus or minus 5% is not a percentage that I would trust every time!
None of that analysis should detract from your video. It remains a great piece of work. It was hugely informative. That we drew slightly different conclusions does not affect the very high quality of the video. Thank you for doing it!

@@TomPalmerGolf Being that the ball speed numbers were accurate with the driver why are we even worrying about what distance it puts out? You're not trying to dial in a number with a driver you're trying to hit it further so working on increasing your ball speed and using it to dial in wedge distance is really what 90+% of golfers need to be focusing on anyway so this seems like a no brainer. I've had one for a couple weeks and I put a book under it when I am hitting driver so it is level with the ball I dont think I've had one not read out of the 200+ driver swings I've taken with it., just a thought.

    • @larrybud
      @larrybud 3 года назад

G80 can't measure spin. It's estimated based on club. Spin rate is a huge factor in carry distance. All of these monitors in this price range suck for distance because of this.
Note that the Mevo can measure spin, but you need stickers placed on the ball for it to be accurate. The next step up is SkyTrak which is $2000, but it *measures* spin, and in the comparison videos vs Trackman is very accurate
