Dennis, you're right. Those of us who are interested in what caused the problems on Sick Week are not going to "click off." There's too much to learn from you to do that.
I really enjoyed this episode, informative, technical, humorous and fun. Engineering is all about *PROBLEM SOLVING* and it seems that you have had a lot of niggley problems (niggley is a word like melty, it should be used more often!) Bedding in piston rings is a bit like bedding in a Cam, it either happens and all is well or they polish the bores and it's all a nightmare! Thanks Alex and Dennis for sharing this with us, i enjoyed it that much I'll be watching again tomorrow! 👍✊😂✌
Hahaha, your dad knows more about your RUclips audience than RUclips does 🤣🤣🤣 Well done Denis and Alex. Love this channel and your meticulous approach to everything. Understand why you do this, but is so great to be part of the journey, even if it is just a few minutes a week.
Well that was an interesting problem! Great explanation from the two of you and so pleased that the fix is in hand. Don't worry - it was not at all boring and in fact it was a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for all the content - see you next time! 😊
Hey Alex, I love you and your father. The both of you get along so well. Your father never gets upset when it comes to racing. No matter if an engine blows up or a transmission tears up, anything. The man has patience of a saint. I know this is your year for the 6's. Good luck, take care and be safe.
That's so cool that You laid it out for us... Because. Sick week stalled for the '55 Info.. and hey. New build. Working out the gremlins is kinda par for the course. But like Dennis said. Impressive for running with all these issues. Imagine when it's running at 100% 😎😉
Wow, that is impressive that the 55 did as well as it did with all that happened. The explanation has been educational to me and leads me to think I need to check the cylinder walls on my block. Glad you'll make it back to Bradenton. Hope to see you guys there.I really liked the "melty" part. Ha ha👍
Spark Notes = Cliff Notes = Enotes I like how it took 2 weeks to study the computer data and look at parts, now consider what the various folks were doing back before computers and data were collected and they were tuning using the sound of the engine and what the plugs looked like after a chop run.
This is one of the most interesting episodes I've seen yet. I learned a bunch, mostly of things I've never thought of. I could listen to you and your dad explain things in detail all day. Good luck getting it back together. It's one of my favorite cars.
Ah yes, Methanol is the detonation king, saw so much damage during bb/fc days, really enjoy seeing you and your dad working together, also you have amazing vendor help. We did it by the seat of our pants back then, ran over cranks, burned up fc bodies it was crazy, just sayin I think you'all are doing it the rightway!
I don't think anybody on any chanel has ever to my knowledge, taken the time to explain in depth on figuring out what had happened to cause the problem with the motor.Great video.
All great info, great diagnosis. Bottom line: 1-use SS braided for lines with heat. 2-Maybe perform the initial break in of rings/cylinders with regular quality gas, and ensure the rings/cylinders, and lifters for that matter break in correctly. Great video, enjoyed it, Cheerz !!!
I love how much your dad has gotten comfortable talking to the camera, you guys make a great team. You guys have so much knowledge, I’m sure your dad is very proud of you.
With your car and Joe Berrys car next to each other is awesome, your car has the cool factor, and Joes car has the beauty factor, and together is just pure awesomeness.
Come on. I watch to the end of all your weekly transmissions. And tell your DAD that all the tech talk between you and who ever it is when your trying to fix something. Is so so interesting to watch. Your channel was one of those, Oh what's this? and I have been with you for the last 4 months and completely watch every video. Thank you to all your friends and your Family for keeping this a fun and interesting channel.Give your dog a hug. :)
I don’t think people realize how valuable the information you shared with us is. Y’all spend hours and thousands of dollars then gave us the solution or culprit to your problem for free
Definitely not boring. Don't let the people drag you down with the history comments, content is worth the wait. Was glad to see the tripod use at the end, the beginning I have to close my eyes for a lot of it, you are very energetic behind that camera :).
1.) Noticed in your HOLLEY screen, RPM was all over the map while spooling the turbos. 2.)The summary that I have heard someplace, by introducing oil into one’s fuel and air mixture, causes loss of power. Be interesting to learn more about this situation in the future. Thanks for the breakdown! Much appreciated. Excellent info.
Usually a big part of the problem is that oil burns like low octane which can cause problems. It also burns dirty so builds up carbon which can cause hot spots and more problems.
You talk about the 55 anytime Alex! Very informative. Like how your dad calms down your excitement. Alex, you have alot to say and trying to get it all out at once. Take a deep breath, count ten, organize your thoughts and talk! I do enjoy your videos. Also like how you are getting your dad involved more! I am predicting you will be in the 6's at Bradenton. You go Girl!! 6's!!
See you guys in Bradenton in March! Can't wait to see what that hot rod runs now!! I saw one video that you used "Bad To The Bone" song. I think you should use that a "walk out" music! It fits when you see the car pull out onto the track. I am sure the track announcers at Bradenton would hook it up! 6s at over 200mph! I can't wait!!!
Alex and Dennis Good team together. I think you guys are the envy of many. I am a civil and structural engineer in my mid 60's As a young designer that was keen to set the world on fire, an old PHD engineer that was mentoring me on the side, took me to lunch. Yeah. Had a good talk. Basically went like this : Remember, if you err, err on the side of conservancy. That way you dont fly in the face of the wind and destroy things. When you destroy things you cost a lot of money to repair it. And kill people. Money is nothing. Dont kill people. You get to sleep better and stay out of jail. I listened. Carefully. I had a great deal of respect for this man. Up untill today i still sleep well and stay out of jail. Back to motors and things. I applied that thought to everything i did after that. If i didnt know, i waited untill i did. And i was involved in some crazy street racing for many years. Only ever lost one engine on full throttle. Cars and bikes. We were going over 200 mph on the street in the late 70's early 80's. That took some doing. Talking about big daddy Don Garlits. He had the mindset too. Try your best not to break it. If you not sure, dont run it. And he never broke much in his career. A legend to learn from. So, watching the two of you deciding not to make a banzai pass, and possibly destroy the motor, gets big kudos from me. My respect ratcheted up miles by watching that. Shows respect for each other, shows a humbleness and a respect for your car. The thing with breaking stuff, you got no control over whats breaking and where its going. Well done. Keep on keeping on Heads up Eyes open No fear
I really admire and enjoy your and your dads relationship working together. I have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls and worked on cars for 30 years and even my boys didnt take an interest to it and seeing how you both work together is amazing. And your knowledge of the vehicle and knowing how to work on it is so nice to see someone your age with the passion you show. Great job and I cant wait for the next 55 video.
"That's because we're stupid." Dennis 2022. That was absolutely hilarious. Good work Alex and Dennis. That was very entertaining. You guys are good problem solvers.
I love the 55 videos and all the videos that you and Denis post, so please keep posting videos more frecuently because i always learn something from you and Denis, GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
The valve reliefs sharp edges should be lightly softened and the tops of the pistons either heat barrier coated OR what we did for high end turbo engines in the 90's was tape the entire piston with duct tape except for the top face and then glass bead the top, this will allow the entire crown to take a nice even carbon coat which will adhere in the finish created by the glass beads. THIS will act as an insulator and minimize hot spots in the combustion chamber. Learned that one from the guy who built GAS RHONDA's Cammers.
SHRINK TUBE DENNIS!...... It's pretty thick and tough in the larger sizes..... and it's lightweight, cheap, and stays in place and comes in colors.......You could also make slip covers from heater hose...... All kinds of good ways to keep braided stainless from sawing on your chassis!
With Engines, there are a lot of factors to try and compensate for. You tweak one thing and throw another out. Engines are a fine art of Balance. Fuel ratio, Timing, boost, trans. All in a brand new build and switching to methanol instead of pump gas. That is how you create a cyclone or tornado. It takes a while to get everything balanced. Once you two get it balanced. My guess is Alex will hit mid to maybe low 6's without raising a sweat! That car is going to become a BEAST. Good Video, BTW, Excellent Info for true car fanatics. p.s. when at Bradenton, look up Dr. Tune em all! That guy and Cleetus's dyno will make that 55 Sing like a rockstar.
That was a fantastic explanation a lot of people have no idea how the cylinders get home and yeah the converter oil was hot awesome I've been wondering what happened so finally it got here was looking for the explanation of what happened so that was great😃😃😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
i was soaking up this info like a sponge, makes total sense that you ran a new fuel and didnt know the engine wants something totally tuned differently for it. knowledge is always learned the hard way most times
Like everyone else has said, you can't possibly bore your subscribers with interesting, informative facts. Everyone can learn something from your experiences. Based on what you've said about methanol would it be best to thoroughly break in on gasoline/mild tune? When broken in would your leakdown % tell you if everything had seated properly or even a visual/scope of the cyl walls. Best of luck on achieving your first six. Artie
Me and Jack Daniel's are having a hard time keeping up. Sure wish ya'll would've showed up at Darlington last weekend. They had open big tire spots left. Good people putting the show on. I want to look in the driver's door when she let's go of the button and watch her ride. Maybe next time .....
You and your dad are a class act. Please Please paint or wrap the 55 so it looks classy also. The patina looks as if the car has been neglected and not well taken care of. Stay safe and have a great new successful season.
If the damaged piston, spark plug, and valve were all the same cylinder I’m curious is the spark plug dropped the tip which stuck the valve just enough for the piston to smack it which bent or tuliped the valve and caused the lack of lash.
I prefer a rod through the block than loads of tiny problems, and when you find and fix one small problem it seems that this just exacerbates another of the small problems and I end up chasing my tail, then I become frustrated and impatient and cause more small problems. Sometimes it's best to take a step back and laugh at myself!
So, I randomly clicked on this video (coming over from the ISKY cam grinding tour) and yes, it IS interesting (to me anyway). I wish 'd been there during Sick Week. And I already know it'll be easy for me to stay interested. Looking forward to the next one....... (Peace is a nice sign off.)
Thanks for the update. First I was shocked to see your awesome 55 Chevy 210 purpose built drag car pulling a trailer. Then as I was watching the first video I started wondering if that by using the 55 as a trailer puller on a cross-country road trip, might it lead to any adverse wear & tear issues under race conditions. I mean that's a whole lot of engine for steady highway cruising for a lengthy bit of time. But then I realized this may not have been the first time y'all pulled the trailer on a racing road trip. Either way, thanks for explaining about the cracked "melty" piston.
Glad you got it figured out, annoying and stressful to have multiple issues. Enjoy your channel and thanks for the summary and sending you good vibes for your quest for 6's
Alex thanks for sharing your video, anatomy of a melty down. 😆. Well is very nice of you and your dad to take time and explain what happened to the engine. I can't keep laughing 🤣 when your dad with a straight face said he dropped from 3rd grade. Like your dad said he's very impressed with how fast the 55 run not being well. Wish you the best and I'll stay tuned for more things come in your channel, can't wait to see you running a 6s pass.
I watch everything you publish guy's, you guy's are awesome just keep on rocking it, I was worried due to the lack of video's but now that you have explained the why its all good.
Hey Alex I am watching the sick week breakdown on the Whiteboard ...You are cool. But your dad dennis is awesome. I have had 5 big block Chevelles and totally understand what your dad and you are saying. Love the vids. Thanks
Hi Well done! I had the same remedies in my mind about the mishap, was not aware of the oil and methanol acting like diesel thou. Lol. I have gladed my bore once before with an upgrade in bigger injectors. Well done. 100% proof will run real well now with the hone plus your data. Yaay. Thanks.
Very informative video. Dennis has so much knowledge I couldn’t even comprehend how he does it all. It takes so much to build a car from ground up. Hope to see you guys on power tour this year. Will be looking for ya’ll.
Loved the information. Glad you were able to figure it out. Love the way Daughter and Dad interact. Racing has always been complicated adding more ways to diagnose sometimes still doesn’t help when you get a perfect storm! Great content.
Oil additives Calcium and Magnesium are a huge knock contributors when collected in the combustion chamber. Some of my sources from GM say oil related knock is twice as aggressive when compared to fuel related knock ... in the passanger car world this condition would be known as LSPI and the reason for the creation of dexos Gen 2 oil... this was to simply limit these additives. Now you're not goin to run that oil but race oils are high in these additives. The kicker is none of the current aftermarket engine controllers have any knock strategy for oil related knock making it impossible to tune out. It might be worth looking a tad closer at the oil additive package your running. Maybe blackstone a few of your top oil choices and see where you stand on a additive level. I'm sure fixing top end sealing issue will help most of the problem but to me its the lil things that give you the edge. Being under sparked will make your EGTs very hot because you are starting the combustion so late in the cycle you simply shoving the whole flame front out the exhaust instead of using for power....very hard on exhaust valves, seats and turbo hot side parts. You and Dad are a great team! I enjoy watching and look forward to future vids! Ryan

There is a obvious reason that word is not used.😂👍
Cross hatch during rehoning the cylinder wall.?..and ring gap change.? ..Figuring
I for one was not bored at all. I love this episode!!!

Alex, it's always fun to see you & your dad go back & forth--well done. :)
Apreciate you guys taking the time to share the issues with us. Really helps me to understand and follow along

Great "chalk talk" from you both. ALL your comments from earlier videos now make perfect sense. Good job.
With everything that was going on with the 55 and what it did under the circumstances, 6's for sure!
Go get it!

Yeah.
Had a good talk.
Basically went like this :
Remember, if you err, err on the side of conservancy. That way you dont fly in the face of the wind and destroy things. When you destroy things you cost a lot of money to repair it. And kill people.
Money is nothing. Dont kill people. You get to sleep better and stay out of jail.

"That's because we're stupid." Dennis 2022. That was absolutely hilarious. Good work Alex and Dennis. That was very entertaining. You guys are good problem solvers.
The Comedy team is educational yet Funtional! I learned stuff here Alex not bored.. Great detective work Alex and Dennis! love team Taylors!

Love 25:00 to 25:25 "They aren't going to click off, it's interesting!" and "We don't care!" Love your attitude! Works great for me!
Nice job as always. Can’t wait to see what she does when you get all that straightened out.
Omg all that and you still went 7.31.........OMG 6's here we come nice job explaining all that a lot to unpack and diagnose great job
That was a fantastic explanation a lot of people have no idea how the cylinders get home and yeah the converter oil was hot awesome I've been wondering what happened so finally it got here was looking for the explanation of what happened so that was great😃😃😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
to err on the side of caution is to truly understand yourself and the problem as it stands..Good on you, Alex.
i was soaking up this info like a sponge, makes total sense that you ran a new fuel and didnt know the engine wants something totally tuned differently for it. knowledge is always learned the hard way most times
Love watching you two "argue"
Make them as long as they need to be, this is in no way boring, learn a lot in this one.
I'm not an engine builder, but am fairly good at diagnosis, and that made perfect sense. Good Job.
I never would have solved that.
Really enjoyed the detailed explanation. Knew something was way wrong when the Sick seek videos stopped.
Loved the melty, perfect description.
Great when you two put your heads together. 😊
You and your dad are a class act. Please Please paint or wrap the 55 so it looks classy also. The patina looks as if the car has been neglected and not well taken care of. Stay safe and have a great new successful season.
Good work, great explanation and as usual good dad jokes
Pretty sure they make SS braided line with a cloth outer braid, keeps from scratching the paint. Glad you found the issue!
Alex, I could watch you and your dad for hours. Good job....👍😉
Glad you have a engine to repair. I never heard what caused the lash to disappear?
I was wondering the same:) Thought I had maybe missed it
If the damaged piston, spark plug, and valve were all the same cylinder I’m curious is the spark plug dropped the tip which stuck the valve just enough for the piston to smack it which bent or tuliped the valve and caused the lack of lash.
It's easy to head in the wrong direction and get lost when you have multiple small problems. Glad you figured it out.
I prefer a rod through the block than loads of tiny problems, and when you find and fix one small problem it seems that this just exacerbates another of the small problems and I end up chasing my tail, then I become frustrated and impatient and cause more small problems. Lol, I watched and loved the whole episode. I really enjoy you and your dad's sense of humor.
Perfect synopsis, loved the video and explanation of issues you encountered- you’re lucky to have one another to enjoy your adventures, good luck 🍀!!
explanation was totally clear . can't keep oil out of combustion chamber with unsealed rings .
Thanks for the update. First I was shocked to see your awesome 55 Chevy 210 purpose built drag car pulling a trailer.

Good luck!! Glad you figured out all those issues.
Dennis cracks me up, I love his voice overs!
I watch everything you publish guy's, you guy's are awesome just keep on rocking it, I was worried due to the lack of video's but now that you have explained the why its all good.
Really interesting, great investigative process, I learned a lot from your video, Thanks for sharing
Great information. You and your dad are really great together.
Hey Alex I am watching the sick week breakdown on the Whiteboard ...You are cool. But your dad dennis is awesome. I have had 5 big block Chevelles and totally understand what your dad and you are saying. Love the vids. Thanks
This was an amazing episode. I love the 100 Proof 55. Dennis you are my hero
Certainly a learning curve guys. Good you know and engine not hurt so bad. Not bored lol. 6s getting closer 👍
on to the 6s!!!! GREAT video once again and I'm looking forward to seeing some updates on the COE build.
Hi
Well done!
I had the same remedies in my mind about the mishap, was not aware of the oil and methanol acting like diesel thou.
Lol.
I have gladed my bore once before with an upgrade in bigger injectors.
Well done.
100% proof will run real well now with the hone plus your data.

Going through the triage section of the parking lot really brings new meaning to Sick Week.
Good luck guys can't wait to see videos.
Great explanation on what went on specially with your dad great guy where would you be without him keep up the great work and good luck
Great video!!! One of your best for sure. The details & the troubleshooting process helps to teach us all a few things.
I felt that it was alot more complicated than your initial impression. Good thing you yanked the heads off to make double sure.
Very informative video. Dennis has so much knowledge I couldn’t even comprehend how he does it all. It takes so much to build a car from ground up. Hope to see you guys on power tour this year. Will be looking for ya’ll.
I love the in depth details, its great learning.
Disappointing after such a great start... thanks for giving us all the answers and looking forward to bigger better faster
We meet Henson at Tulsa a couple years ago, super nice and knowledgeable guy! O right! Bring on the COE video!
I love these videos where you two go back and forth!
Can’t wait to see you get that back on the track to see what your getting ! 👍
Great episode, Dennis is one smart cookie. Nice to see a problem solved not bandaid’d
Great video. Good analysis of the issues
Wow , that was a great video. I love the technical explanations , I always learn something. Thank you so much.
What an awesome video, I love the detailed explanation of what went wrong.
Loved the information. Glad you were able to figure it out. Love the way Daughter and Dad interact. Racing has always been complicated adding more ways to diagnose sometimes still doesn’t help when you get a perfect storm! Great content.
Great breakdown on the issues and the Dad Vs Daughter bickering / banter😁👍
Really enjoy these sorts of debriefs! Glad you didn't try to send it...even though it was sad to see you drop out..

It was cool to find out what went wrong. I never heard of "spark notes" ?
Good call not to run. Wild happenings for the trip. Had a small block break all top rings after bout a year running. Bad rings .
