Donkey Kong and Mario have had a confusing past. From enemies to friends, their relationship has certainly transformed. But back in the day when the Donkey Kong series was still beginning, the series could have taken a completely different path... One involving Wario as the villain in Donkey Kong Country, and King K. Rool being nowhere to be found. Everything could have changed if the merged worlds of Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros played out in a different light... If Nintendo just happened to say "yes".

Wario would actually be a fitting villain for a Donkey Kong game seeing as how hes a treasure hunter and a schemer/charlatan. Theres several different ways you could put him in DK's setting and still have it make sense as to why he's the villain. Heres a few examples:
-tearing down the jungles for lumber
-looting ancient ruins and unsealing evil beings long hidden from the world
-capturing DK's friends to build a zoo
-Bulldozing the island to build a grand resort
-stealing the island's fruit to snack on
-buying the deed to the island and attempting to displace the kongs
-teaming up with or overthrowing king k rool
We might not have had Funky Kong, a truly dark timeline.

We are actually living in a pretty bad timeline. Funky Kong has his own game that beat every nintendo franchise in my timeline. Actually he beat every franchise in the world. Very sad it does not exist ;(

You know, if they had gone the Wario route, then they should have had it where Wario originally did something bad to the Donkey Kong gang, and Donkey Kong misidentified him as Mario, which set off the Donkey Kong - Mario feud. (It's kind of like Dr. Robotnik setting off the Sonic - Knuckles feud.) Then, Donkey Kong and Mario learn the truth as Wario does some other bad thing, and maybe even kidnaps Mario, so Donkey Kong goes to free him and the friendship is then cemented.
For Wario's Neutral Special, he wields a Gun.

This video also confirms something I'd heard long ago: that Diddy Kong grew out of a modified DK Jr. design that Nintendo wouldn't let Rare use; they told them to either make Jr. look like he did in the arcades, or to call the new design something else. And there it is at 8:29 - a design that looks like Diddy Kong, but without the tail and with a "J" on his shirt.
I miss when Wario was treated as a rival for Mario and wasn't just a minigame pimp. Wario World shows that Wario definitely could make a good beat em up series.

As a Wario fan, it would have been awesome to see this happen, but K.Rool is just as awesome. I'd still like to see a plot like this somehow, where Wario pops up to steal the priceless bananas of DK Island, and DK has to get them back.

Considering that Wario refers to some sort of "Nintendo Land," is it possible that this would bleed into other Nintendo franchises as well? Would Smash Bros just be kind of a given in such a world where Wario was the main villain in DKC? Would certain franchises created after that point be changed drastically, or just not exist? Would we lose Pikmin, Splatoon, and Arms? I think that small difference would lead to a drastically different world.
Pikmin probably wouldn't happen in a "Nintendo Universe" AU. Splatoon would probably happen but with Mario characters. ARMS... I have no idea.

I'd love to see this idea turned into a fan game.
This might not be super relevant, but one bit about Wario's character that I miss is how he used to travel to and from all these different worlds. Most Wario Land games took place in other worlds located inside of items or places in the Mushroom Kingdom, and how he would even occasionally appear in videogames outside his own, like Bomberman, Kirby (along with the rest of the main Mario cast of the time) and Starfy. It's kind of wild to think he could have been in DKC as well, but then we wouldn't have gotten K. Rool. I'm glad it worked out the way it did.
This reminds me of the story mode in Brawl.

He probably would have been added to the list of forgotten one-off Mario villains alongside Wart, Tatanga and the RPG villains.
It's pretty interesting how Wario developed as character seeing him in his debut in the 90's you can see how his main characteristic like being greedy was in a more background level as his main goal was to have a castle of his own. Why? Because Mario had one so he just wants one better than his. His whole purpose was being better than Mario at anything so he could be the most famous videogame character and now that part of him is the one at the background.
Wonder how Mario got a castle anyway.

The way I heard it, Nintendo approached Rare to make a game with any Nintendo character they wanted, and they chose DK. And the Kremlings were taken from a different unfinished Rare game, so it's very possible that K. Rool would have existed anyway, in fact we're probably missing a game since that original game probably got scrapped. Also, it's interesting that Mario has his "let's a-go" voice in the pitch, I think the only thing with that accent before was Mario Teaches Typing?
Yeah, but it seemed like that was the way they were going. It appeared in Mario's Game Gallery in 1995 as well (which I thought predated DKC but apparently not).

One thing that makes this concept weird is that when Mario gets turned into stone, of all characters who has to save him, it's Donkey Kong. Why not Luigi? Well, this concept was pitched the same year Mario is Missing came out so Luigi already had a recent mission saving his brother, plus he was mostly forgotten by Nintendo between it and Luigi's Mansion outside the sports and party games as well as a few cameos.

The whole "Nintendo Land" thing sounds like something out of Captain N: The Game Master. I wouldn't be surprised if Rare was being influenced by Captain N, seeing as they were one of the few western developers working under Nintendo. Nowadays, there's SORT OF a broad Nintendo "canon" (though I use canon loosely) presented in the Super Smash Bros. series, but way back in the day, there wasn't anything in the way of some Nintendo crossover universe, at least not on Nintendo's part. Captain N was the closest thing there was, and that more than likely seems to have been the result of Nintendo licensing out their stuff to whoever way back in the day, and having very little supervision over what was done with it (so far as I'm aware, Captain N and the early Mario cartoons don't have a Japanese dub, which seems pretty telling of how little Nintendo of Japan wanted to be involved with them).
So had this pitch gotten through, and had it been a success, Captain N's whole "Video Land" concept, rebranded as "Nintendo Land", would probably go on to effect the other Nintendo franchises as a whole. With a proper pre-establishment of Nintendo franchises mixing together, Super Smash Bros. might've been way different, if it came to fruition at all. As I recall, the original Dragon King idea got retooled the way it did because the recognizable characters would help it sell, but what if instead, Mario and possibly others popped in as guest fighters while the rest of Dragon King remained mainly untouched? The greater Nintendo Land concept would allow Dragon King to just exist as its own thing within that setting, and sell itself on guest appearances rather than BEING the big Nintendo crossover itself.
From what I've heard, & read, this is how it went. DIC (pronounced Deek) cartoons originally reached out to Nintendo, about making the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Nintendo said no, they had no interest in making an American cartoon. I don't remember the whole sequence of events leading to the Super Show. What I do know, or rather how I understand it, is that Nintendo had little input on the cartoons, except for license, and what the characters should look like.
Specifically for Captain N, that was born as a mini-comic concept in Nintendo Power. The character, or at least design, of Princess Lana, was based on Palutena from the NES Kid Icarus game. Some of those responsible for the show say they never heard of Samus, although Mother Brain is the main villain of the cartoon.

@@zigged5296 Yeah the interesting thing about DKR is it was made Diddy's game to give it brand recognition. So if we had no Diddy it would have been Timbre the tiger's game as it was originally planned or maybe DK Jr.'s but I do agree Banjo and Conker would have probably gone mostly unchanged by this.

That would have been an interesting concept. Maybe Wario would have replaced Bowser as "final boss" character as well. I mean he was in Super Mario Land 2 but he could have been in later Mario games as well. He could have kidnapped the princess to overthrow her reign of the Mushroom Kingdom as starting point for his plan of world domination.
Nah probably not since at that point Bowser was pretty well established with SMB3, SMB and SMW. He even had the Koopalings at that point. Probably wouldn't change anything on that front.

I love the Wario games and getting into the Donkey Kong games since last year.
While it would have definitely been interesting, I think that's for the better that the pitch got reworked.
It would have made for wacky games for sure but I prefer how both series diverged and got very different in tone & gameplay

Marx Yea your probably right I haven't played Kirby games in a while. I'd go with Nightmare over Dark Matter or even Marx. As for Mother Brain I was just going off the captain N show where she was the main villain. In modern day the main Metroid villain would probably be Ridley as he appears in all the games.

Great video! While I love the idea of DK vs. Wario I'm glad it didn't come to fruition, as the DK who became my favorite character from the Mario franchise may have never existed at all since the concept uses the original DK instead while separating his more distinct name (Cranky) into a another character.
My man Wario gently refused to participate as the main villain in DKC so K Rool could have his time to shine. You have to respect the garlic man
Makes me think about how there's a game where wario switches between various costumes to get through stages. K Rool would have probably worked well for that concept.

This is some really interesting stuff. I had no idea about this until now and would love to see the rest of the illustrations. To be honest though, I'm glad this didn't end up happening because I like that we ended up getting King K. Rool and also I like Wario being an anti-hero, whereas if this scenario ended up happening he likely would have been cemented as a full-on villain.
Also a look at Diddy when he was still a DK Jr. redesign. Interesting. Already knew about that but it's interesting to see it in this pitch.
I would imagine that after Wario got the big bucks from his games, he decided to make a island resort to go make more money. He discovered Donkey Kong Island and decided that was a great place to build his resort. Obviously, Donkey Kong was having none of it and banishes Wario from the island.

In an alternate universe, Nintendo did use Wario for the final project of Donkey Kong Country, completely changing the story of what it is in this universe.

I've seen some fan made DKC4 games and they are pretty good actually. Now all we need is someone to make a game where King K. Rool teams up with Wario and takes over the land knocking out Mario and throwing him into a dungeon with Diddy Kong. So Luigi teams up with DK and they travel and can pair up like the Kongs do, bringing together both worlds and their respective enemies. :D This gives both sides a reason to team up.
This concept sounds like it would not necessarily give rise to the legacy that Donkey Kong Country gave us. Can you imagine a world in which there was only one semi forgettable DK game in the 90's and we would never see the likes of DK64?

So... Basically the subspace plot in Brawl, Wario has a gun that turns DK to stone thou, and Diddy has to rescue him with help of others(not main plot but Diddy Kong's quest) then to defeat Wario

DK would jump to save Mario, as it’s canon that the DK in the original Jumpman game was DK’s grandfather and that this DK is good.

I remember one of the Rare guys saying "now if only we didn't spend maybe five minutes on K. Rool's name" or something like that when he was revealed for Ultimate.
K. Rool is a pretty simplistic character concept, I can easily see him being a sudden replacement villain. Not so sudden that the entire game feels different, but even so.
Well based on the fan theories and what Rare said, only if Cranky told his son stay away from any plumber and DK listened, would he have reason not to help.
Much like how DK was the baddie for Mario initially, I don't think that much would have changed. I think the most significant thing would have been that Wario would have had more of a gang of baddies as opposed to his Wario Ware crew. The Kremlings were something RARE would still have but I can't see them being used in other things besides other RARE projects, maybe Dinosaur Planet?

I actually wouldn't mind a more modern version of this idea coming to fruition. Like maybe Wario and K. Rool team up and capture Mario and also some of the Kongs...all three universes are the same universe so there's no need to explain any crossing over.
So it went from super Wario taking over Nintendo land by time traveling to get a stone zapper, to crocodiles stealing bananas to cause starvation.
