  • Ruby throated hummingbirds nest from Nova Scotia to the Gulf Coast and south Florida, west to Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It winters primarily from south Texas and northeast Mexico south to Costa Rica, Cuba, and Bermuda. It is the most common hummingbird that breeds in the eastern half of North America.
In this video, Outdoor Alabama video producer Ron Jolly demonstrates how to attract hummingbirds to your yard.

I never had any type of bird feeder in the yard. I heard that hummers can remember 300 different feeding locations. An interesting observation I had was that the morning after I put a hummingbird feeder up, there was a cardinal AND a blue jay sitting in the same small tree as the hummingbird feeder. I am convinced that these other birds saw the feeder, and figured they would look to see if there was anything around for them. Birds are smart.

I live in Washington. Just before spring I had a hummingbird chirping at me a few days in a row. I got a feeder. I clean and fill the feeder once a week. I make my own. The bird now lets me know when its close to empty by hovering and staring in the kitchen window. As I speak the feeder is in the dishwasher. I am going to get another feeder since there has become a battle over the feeder with other hummingbirds. I rent an apartment from a hay farmer. Not a single flower to be seen for acres. Still not sure why they are here but they are entertaining.

One day I heard some squeaking outside my window. Looking out I saw 2 males locked face to face near the feeder. I went outside and found them laying in the grass, still locked together. I gently picked them up and one flew away. The other was exhausted so I set him on the feeder. After a few minutes of sipping the sugar water he flew away. They are like little rockets, zooming all over the yard.

Ant moat works best! They're super cheap off amazon, and you can even get feeders with built in ant moat, or diy some yourself. It's just a little water barrier that they can't cross to reach the feeder. I have one on each of my feeders and have zero ants. I used to have to clean off these huge red ants every couple hours, haven't had a single ant since.

Hello from the west coast of Canada, British Columbia. I have ONE little Hummingbird that visits 2 yrs. now cuz i have flowers on my balcony. I want to know if it is a male or female & your vid. helps me find out. He/she likes the Nasturtiums best. I have Snapdragons & a Mandeville plant as well as Geraniums but the Nasturtiums r his/her favourite. I have made a Hummingbird feeder with instructions on it being safe for the Hummingbird. I enjoy knowing all i can about these incredible little creatures that have beautiful iridescent feathers. Thank you very much, i have enjoyed listening and watching your vid. Have a pleasant week!

As info too, never used distilled water as it lacks all the trace minerals they need. Also boiling removes impurities from the sugar also so you must boil it combined as show here.

I'm in No Va. Put the feeders out in March. The one showed up in April, but left. Same clean feeders.
    Same homemade sugar syrup.
    Same location. It's now 6/3/2020

I live in northern California and it gets hot in summer. What is the reason you have to change the nectar every 3-4 days if it's hot? Does the heat degrade the nectar (sugar water?). What is the temperature that you consider hot? 80, 90, 100 degrees? Thanks so much for this very good video.

    • @homesteadhummingbirds

Changing nectar frequently prevents spoiling - you don't want mold and bacteria growing in the feeders.

Clean feeders with hot water and scrub every surface with a bottle brush and small brushes for the port holes. White vinegar can also be used to clean and always rinse well. Clean and change every 1-3 days and never going past the 3rd day. If it's hot outside or a feeder is in the sun, it should be scrubbed clean with hot water and or vinegar every day....... Do NOT use oils or sprays of any kind like he said, if you have ants an ant moat filled with water will work keeping ants away 100%.

Yes, there will be hummingbirds in Minnesota during the summer months. The best way to see and observe them is to put out feeders for them. Plus the sugar water gives them the energy they need to find and catch small insects which is also part of their diet.

Hummingbirds are in the Americas, but usually northern states will see migrating hummers later in May
