Three years after its debut at Two River Theater in New Jersey, Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz's musical Be More Chill will make its Big Apple debut this summer at the Pershing Square Signature Center. On July 12, the team invited press into their rehearsal room for a first look at the show, which stars Will Roland, George Salazar, and more. Here are highlights, including the songs "More Than Survive," "Michael in the Bathroom," and "The Smartphone Hour."

The way Will dictates his words is always so funny to me, but I am not disappointed in the different cast roles at all. They're all so good and I just, ugh, love them.

Masked Singer Honestly that’s just the way Will sings lol
edit from a year later: I don’t remember commenting this, but I just wanted to add that this isn’t really true. There are many videos of him singing from before he was on Broadway and his voice isn’t as squeaky (for lack of better word) as it is here. I think he’s trying to sound like a teen going through puberty but personally I don’t like how it sounds. It sounds forced and unnatural to me, whereas Will Connolly genuinely sounded like an insecure junior trying to make his way through high school. But once again that’s a preference that I have.

Idk, I'm not a fan. I love Will Roland in DEH, but it feels like his singing voice is wrong for this role. Will Connolly had this innate dweebiness and insecurity in his voice, and Will Roland is trying too hard to capture it, and it sounds fake. He sounds like a bad Simple Plan impression at times.

I feel like your opinion would've been better in it's very own comment instead of a reply to this particular one since I'm trying to stay very positive since we can't change the roles, we have to deal with it. I've seen when new casting has been a *lot* worse, for me the new casting in general isn't an issue. In the end, you can have your opinion and I can have mine, but I would have preferred this type of comment to be on it's own where people can agree with you or debate there.
People saying that Roland's voice is off:
It's because it's a different person other than Connolly. Voice is different. Yes, it's off, but it's HIS way of singing the song. We're just so USED TO Connolly's way of singing it.

Connolly had such a unique voice as well as Roland, so it’s definitely going to seem off but they’re both amazing singers so I’m sure it’ll be fine!

•Will is an amazing Jeremy.
•The new Jenna (I’ve heard her name is Lauren I think?) has a beautiful voice!
•George is definitely showing a lot more emotion than before for Michael In The Bathroom. We’ve all scene the previous clips for comparison. I saw him at 54 Below just recently, so this was a short amount of time to get those new changes in. Definitely a good improvement!

Caden Does Gaming True. It's more that I think actors in their thirties playing teenagers always tend to feel a little off. Like they're trying to hold on to their youth still and remember what it felt like. And so their performances tend to feel somewhat strange and inauthentic to me.

-will roland playing jeremy: it isn't bad, but back in 2015, (or 2014 i can't remember) joe iconis, when describing jeremy's character, he said jeremy wasn't exactly a cool person or an extreme loser, and just a normal kid. will shows a jeremy that is more of a loser rather than the normal kid wanting more kind of character people were going for. also i can't exactly get over his high notes in more than survive. other than that, i think will is a pretty okay jeremy!
-the new jenna is amazing oh my gosh i love her so much
-the screaming that brooke and jenna make is a good addition to the smartphone hour i don't know why i just love it???

I’ve read 10 comments and 3 were lists that were pretty much copy pastes of each other. Gathering all the data it seems the general consensus is that this new guy playing Jeremy (his name is also Will god bless) is a good Jeremy. The female playing Brooke screaming during the smartphone hour is enjoyed thoroughly, and that George is showing a lot more emotion as Michael.

Will Roland never really had time to really actually sing his heart out where people can actually listen to it since in Dear Evan Hansen his one solo is small. But here we actually get to hear him be able to sing more. I really liked his solo in DEH, people always seem to forget he has a good voice too.
