    ★ About Bernie:
Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

1on1 If you think illegals are responsible for job loss, you are misinformed. Bernie was against the free trade programs that caused job loss. In Trumps favor, he is against free trade also. If you want to pick produce, or clean up after whitey, knock yourself out, take an illegals job ! You also use socialist and fascism in the same sentence to describe liberals. I believe you need to go back to school and learn the meaning of the words.I also detect a bit of psychological projection on your part. I would never delete your comments, how could anyone see how silly you are !

Another strong speech Bernie! My favorite part was the reference to Roosevelt..."Everything Roosevelt did was considered socialist." - Really hit home the point that all these government programs we love today: SS, concept of minimum wage, banking protections, and child labor laws, were all considered a "radical intervention in the marketplace" but today these programs are the fabric of our great nation.

The Great Depression started with the Crash of 1929, and FDR was not elected until the fall of 1932, and didn't take office until March of 1933, so WTF are you talking about? A mere 'recession' would have been over, before FDR was even nominated by the Democratic Party!

    • @whyamimrpink78
      @whyamimrpink78 8 лет назад

+Paul Kent Every recession except for two were recovered from in around 5 years or less. We did so with little to no federal government actions.
The two that took the longest to recover from is the one we are currently in (8 years so far) and the great depression. FDR took over 4 years after the recession started. If left alone we would have recovered. Instead he decided to spend and add new regulations which prolong our recovery to ultimately it took the war and his death to recover from. FDR turned a recession into a depression.

As an Australian citizen, I was surprised to hear (in this speech) that the US does not have almost any of the social benefits that we have had in Australia for at least 40 years. Social protection of all Australian citizens include - universal medical care, minimum wage (I think around $16), discrimination law against gender & race, 4-5 weeks paid annual leave, 12-months Maternity leave, and others.
On the down-side, we still cannot face our terrible record of uniting with our aboriginals (first nation people) and our senior politicians still align with US and we constantly send our people to join US wars overseas.

I linked this incredible speech to my facebook account and offered my friends the following words:
Look. I'll make you a deal.
Find time for one hour of Bernie Sanders this weekend, and I will give you two hours of my time for whatever you wish, barring something illegal or manual labor.
Ok. Maybe I will do something illegal, we can negotiate that.
Bernie talks to Georgetown U. Bernie hits the main points of his agenda as he always does. He also draws an inspiring comparison to the polices and programs and naysayers of FDR and delves a bit more than usual into foreign policy.
I have seen at least half a dozen of his rally speeches now, along with his debate and forum appearances and countless interviews.
This is his BEST one yet.
We are on the cusp of something miraculous here folks. We are staring through the looking glass on a better tomorrow for ourselves, our friends and family, our neighbors, and the world as we know it.
The vast majority of media are doing everything they can to paint this man as someone who has no shot. They WANT you to avoid listening to him. They are waiting with bated breath for one moment where this man slips up. But that is just the problem. This is not an ordinary politician. It is incredibly easy to sniff out bullshit. Bernie is as cool and as fresh as the other side of the pillow.
Take a chance. Start whipping up some breakfast, start cleaning out that spare room, start some long overdue body grooming project....just press play on this, keep your ears open, and let your mind tell you what to do next.
We do not need to be disenfranchised anymore. But this may be the only real hope in believing in the political process in our lifetime. Bernie says at one point (spoiler alert) - "do not be cynical".....Bern, you couldn't be more right. I am the biggest cynic I know. But I believe in you sir. Right person. Right place. Right time. I will not stop talking about you. I hear your rally cry. I have never felt a speech feel so historic -- "in the moment". I am just trying to turn the volume up a little bit more.

Democratic socialism simply means, taxation WITH representation.
Which is what this country rebelled and fought for.
The American idea, that we are ALL equal under law, is democratic socialism.

      That's simply bullshit, dude.
Democratic Socialism is the government controlling and regulating everything. It's precisely not what the American Ideal was, is, or even should be.
America was supposed to be a Democratic Republic, and despite the Democratic Party's attempts over the last 70 years, that's what we still have today. It would be even more so if the Democratic Party simply wasn't so fascinated by Socialism, a political strategy that simply doesn't work.
Capitalism is America's economic strategy. It is precisely why we are "the richest country in the world."
The only real problem with this government is special interest groups more or less paying people to be their voice in the government. Both the Democrats and the Republicans are guilty of this. And yes, Bernie Sanders is one of those voices.
Just about the only candidate in any party that at least speaks for just himself is Donald Trump. People can say whatever they want about him - but no one owns him. And you can't take that away from him. Ron Paul ran for two candidacies straight, and was the same way. We should have gotten him while we had the chance. We really shouldn't pass up another opportunity like that.
Get rid of the special interests groups, and a lot of our "problems" would go away over night - guaranteed. All we need is a government that is blind to justice and just does what's right. The rest will literally take care of itself.

Thank you to Senator Bernie Sanders for explaining very unfair criticism of core "social programs" in the US which he terms socialism and I do not (e.g., United Kingdom's National Health Services). It is however, a conversion to what is often called "welfare states" in the world (e.g., high reliance on government health care systems) which I also believe is inaccurate, at least at its initial inception. In the US, a mass conversion from an economy of manufacturing and industry to one termed the "service economy" did indeed occur.

Preach, Bernie! Because some things in life are worth preaching over. Way to get to the meat and potatoes of the current state of the working/middle classes, and what you plan to do about it. Folks, regardless of your political creed or allegiance this coming year, just get out and do your civic duty. This is what taking hold of our future looks like. There is no longer such a thing as "no reason to vote", however difficult our congressmen have made it. #bernie2016

Socialism, a qualitatively new phase in the development of humanity, is a global system based on the conquest of political power by the international working class over and against the capitalist class, control of the productive forces, the commanding heights of the economy--finance, industry, transportation--by the international working class, the incentivization of cooperation rather than competition on a global level, democratic planning and stability rather rather than the insecurity and anarchy that characterize life under capitalism.
Socialism is the path towards the realization of humanity's immanence, i.e. its capability of controlling its own destiny in accordance with what is good for the species and in accordance with the full development of the kind of rich individuality the bourgeoisie claims is the fruit of capitalist society, but which it systematically tries to destroy when it stares them in the face.

Bernie will be great for America. Hearing this speech, it seems odd how the US is so far behind the times. Almost all of the social security measures he proposes are taken for granted in my country (Portugal). To give you an idea "Social Democrat" is the name of the main CONSERVATIVE party in this country. It's about basic human rights and I hope that Americans now finally understand how they have been robbed of their rights. Vote Bernie!

When you can't afford to do things, you aren't free to do those things. Pay walls are barriers to freedom. Ultimately, freedom means free of charge and free time away from workplace servitude and drudgery. Oppression is not just a police state, but the unlimited freedom of bosses to bully, exploit, overwork and dispose of employees. Wherever there are high profits, oppression is involved: denying people any actual choice about where they work, if they work, how much they are paid, how much they pay for everything they need, and little to no choice about what to buy. The ideal business deal is one in which the other party has no choice but to take your bad price. That is oppression, and that is where all modern slavery originates. The great deregulation in the name of freedom, the great casualisation and flexibility of labour markets in the name of freedom and efficiency has directly resulted in the recreation of actual human slavery, which is not rich people having to pay taxes, but people being bought and sold to perform unpaid work, including the US prison system, which flourishes through the exploitation of inmates as unpaid workers.
