    In this episode, we install the gutters on our off grid shipping container home. We're one step closer to being able to catch rainwater off of our roof!

    You need to keep the leaves 🍁 out of the gutter by installing a screen on top of the gutter that will only allow the water 💦 to enter the gutter.

    Shipping containers have monocoque bodies. The corrugation panels (roof, sides, and back), floor, purlins, front doors, frame, and rails form an integrated structural skin Recommended Plan coulc.it/home They are strong and made to carry floor loads far in excess of what is required for typical home construction. But, when you modify them, cutting holes or penetrating members, they are weakened. Regardless of what level of modification your shipping container home design calls for, it is recommended to review with a structural engineer or architect.

    So proud of you kids. Been watching the progress, and it is amazing! Growing up in the '50's my Grandparents lived out and had water catchment off their roof with a filtering system to the cistern/work shop building. They had to draw water via rope and pulley and carry it to the house. No indoor facilities, just an outhouse, and baths were drawn by bucket and heated up by propane in a oval stock tank in an out building. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Great job!

    A quick tip on the blind rivets, if possible (like in this application, where one can see both sides of the joined work piece), put a appropriately sized flat washer on the opposite side and it will help stabilize the connection and help prevent pull out, especially with thin materials like the gutters.

    Love your videos. Very down to earth natural ppl. Food for thought. I put screens all along the tops of my rain gutters. Keeps the crud flying around. Won't go into the gutters. Just plain water. Screen comes in rolls I'm thinking. Helps alot. Never have to clean your gutters. Pine needles and leaves won't clog them. Jfft thank you

    Make sure you seal the downspout that is connecting to the pipe that will go to your tanks. The reason being is the pipes will be full of water up to the height of the pipe going into the tank.

    Use a taller ladder, you want the ladder to extend past the roof at least 3 feet. It may not be a big deal today, but when you are 82 like I am, you really need it. It is best to get in the habit now rather than later.

    Awesome channel and build. A couple things I may have chosen to do differently.. - used red or green snips for anything with a curved or corner cut...yellow are straight snips. Red and green are left and right. - chosing to zig zag the water flow from the top roof to the lower will point load your lower gutter at the farthest dist. From the final downspout. Probably overflow your lower gutter in heavy rainfall. Might have been better to leave the top gutter off, save money and effort and evenly dispersed the upper roof water. Just a thought.

    My only suggestion guys is ad a couple more down spouts, we live on a rural property with tank water and we have 2down spouts on the front roof of our house and in a heavy downpour when we’ve been through drought and tanks are almost empty I’ve sadly watched hundreds of litres of water flow over the gutters. And Mackenzie your a gun on that roof coz I can’t even climb a ladder to that height 💪🏼

He is so intelligent, the way he looks at his mom and the love he has for her, but then also one can see that he is well loved by both of you. And as I say, show me a house were the dog is treated with care and love, and I am sure it is a house of honor and love. You are one heck of a couple... or better say a trio? I really REALLY like your videos and what permeates through them to all the viewers!

  • @jasonbunge5756
    @jasonbunge5756 5 лет назад

    Hello! I’ve been following you build your home since the beginning. Had a thought come to mind about your water collection when you said the water tanks will fill up because the tanks are below the level of the gutters, but if you want to keep the water in the tanks, you’ll need to make sure whatever pipe/gutter downspout system you use is absolutely water tight, otherwise you’ll lose water out of the bottom of your gutter connections and the tanks won’t fill up any higher than the lowest leak. Might need to consider PVC pipe and glue the joints. Great work though, been fun watching you both work together.

    In the future, call some local gutter companies and see off they'd give you a cut and drop. I'm a carpenter, but I don't have a gutter machine, and I occasionally get gutter jobs. I've got 3 separate companies who do this for me, when I want to hang the product. The ones I use give full length pieces, ie. No seams. They cut what ever length, supply all the hangers, all the parts, and nothing has to be rivetted. Its all crimped and screwed. They even drill the holes for downspout if you're certain where they need to be. I was wondering on the choice to put gutter on the upper section, since it already drains to the lower section with gravity. You could have had this entire job done in half a day, including downspouts. Just looking to help with the headaches. Good work, keep it up.

    You guys should put some concrete or some boards and a rubber pad on the ground where the pvc pipes will rise to the top of the tank and the top of the house. That pipe will be full of water most of the time so it will have a weight of around 50lbs in a 10ft height which means the pipe will start sinking in the corners over time and might start giving you problems once it starts going down.
    Just a thought.

    I'm really liking the marine look of the home, with the contrasting white and blue-gray metal.
    The one major thing I learned from watching you from the beginning, is I'd never build a home with shipping containers. Using just one as a stand-alone cabin with no other joins, perhaps. Otherwise a steel post and beam build is the way I'd go. It's just significantly easier and more flexible to design.
    You're doing a great job, and should have huge sense of accomplishment & pride when done.
