Congrats on the new edition. I have 5 kids myself. I'm looking at this and a little voice in my head is screaming, IT WONT WORK!!!! Sure, it will heat to ambient temperature and maybe a few more degrees, but it won't ever be "HOT" water. Where I live (the far north of Australia), every house has a solar hot water heater on the roof. All year round it's all we need. They are brilliant, I'd recommend that to be the way to go. And not much more expensive than the new system you just tor apart. Simple, cheap, easy to install. Plus, for those really cold days, it can be switched to electricity.

Congratulations on the baby!!! After watching my first video a few weeks ago I went back and starting from the beginning. The one thing that jumped out at me was getting water in a 2 gal container. Why don't you get a small pump and put it in the lake. They start at $5 powered by your drill. A sump pump is not much more. A still better pump could be used later to wash cars, dogs, supper dirty kids to get the first coat off and to water your garden.

If you had left the water heater as it was with insulation, it could hold heat much better from a black hose on your roof circulating water a few minutes every fifteen minutes between 10a and 7p up to 120°. It could still benefit from heat in that glass door box also. Might have saved you some work, but would take more work with timer + $20 pump + $50 hose.

When I was a kid, my dad hooked up a similar passive solar heater (used car windshields on either side of the tank). In the summer, we had to wait until 11pm for the water to cool down enough to take a shower. You will need a water chiller in the summer...

Science project? We were thinking more along the lines of extracurricular fitness and Mack was working on her squats. Or Spenser playing baseball and going for a home run, which Mack caught the line drive down center field (hehehe) Or Spenser playing dump truck driver.... you know, get fully loaded grabbing some gears, maybe grinding on it while driving it home, get to the right spot, go in as far as you can, untrap, dump his load and pull out. (hahaha) That is how the other half sought to explain to the littles ones of how babies are made. geeze! LOL
