Walking by itself it's still far healthier than being a full couch potato, but walking + weight training ticks a lot of boxes as you're increasing your base caloric consumption + stimulating your muscle mass. And all of this is worthless if nutrition is not in check. For fat loss I'd say it's not even 80/20, it's more like 95/5 towards nutrition versus training.

It is possible, theoretically, to be in a calorie surplus on keto. But you have to work at it. You have to make yourself uncomfortably full, often. Whereas, with a too-high balance of carbs, you can be in a calorie surplus and still feel hungry 6 hours a day. Keto works because your intake is controlled by a lack of craving, instead of spreadsheets and self hatred. Of course, that craving control can also be achieved by eating a mountain of food with low calorie density and pounds of fiber... but broccoli is keto-friendly too, so why not both?
Most people are simply not capable to understand laws of thermodynamics and especially don't know the difference between opened and closed thermodynamic system. It is crazy how people repeat dogmas out of the context and these ignorant trainers repeating the claim that human body is closed thermodynamic system is ridiculous!
I actually think their answer might be missing the point of the question a bit. It’s obvious that you need to be in a caloric deficit to lose any kind of weight. To me, the question is asking if a person who’s in a caloric deficit and also walking as the main form of cardio is wasting their time walking any less than at least 30+ minutes because then they’re not really cutting into their fat stores. And it seems like given the first 30 seconds of the video, the answer is yes, maybe?
You have left out a part of human physiology where our cells recycle ADP and AMP, back to ATP. Also, not all foods are digested and absorbed equally. Lastly, skeletal muscle can store on average 50 gm of glycogen and the liver about 500 gm (well fed state). There is no such thing as “burning calories”, instead we utilize ATP for metabolic activities and recycle ATP, and replenish ATP when substrates get low. All food types can enter the citric acid cycle as acetyl-CoA to produce ATP. Hope this helps elucidate this discussion.
The law of thermodynamics has 3 rules...if u dont match all 3 you get a diff outcome...lower calories in does not mean weight loss,if u cut carbs by 500 your metabolism will simply slow down.. rule 1... NO WEIGHTLOSS TILL U LOWER INSULIN LEVELS
While I agree that increasing muscle mass burns more calories at rest, you can't beat a good long walk, especially while fasted, for burning fat. I went keto and intermittent fasting a couple of months back, and now every Saturday I walk for anywhere from 35 to 50km. While fasted. Takes 8-9 hours, no stops, no food, varying terrain from hilly hikes to relatively flat urban terrain. I also work out 3-4 times a week at the gym (recently) and I'm losing fat and keeping my muscle mass. So yeah, muscle is good, but a decent hike which according to my Fitbit burns 5000-6000 calories (all fat calories thanks to the keto) helps. It's also low impact (I'm 59), enjoyable, easy, and very relaxing.
@@Otis-and-Chloe well not 9 hours every Saturday. I was doing regular 7-8 hour walks (approx 36km) along Sydney Harbour from my place, and one day I decided to walk to a friend's place and it ended up being 47.3km. I was previously doing hikes of up to 20km around Sydney's National Parks but a big track repairs program on Sydney Trains on the weekends meant I could no longer get to those hikes so I just started walking around Sydney. Its not all wash though. You increase insulin sensitivity by burning through glycogen. To do that you must fast for a time. There benefits in that even if you do eat a little surplus. Great points though

A callorie deficit diet is advisable for people that are less mobile. There was a time I walked 40KM daily, six days a week. After a month, I went from 86kgs down to 67kgs without sacrificing anything in my diet. I didn't even know it until a friend pointed out that my collarbones look intimidating.
The point of keto is hormonal changes to allow fat adaptation. If 2 people have the same caloric deficit but different hormonal makeups due to macro differences, different insulin sensitivies and different meal timings, one person will burn fat while the other with lower his bmr instead, increasing hunger as a response. This is literally all it is about. Its usually no issue for bodybuilders but for post menopausal prediabetics it is
@@joeyjohnson9765 If you are in a caloric deficit and still relied on carbs your metabolic rate will slow down as a response from the lack of energy intake wich will force you to be more active. With keto you don´t because ketones are always there regardless of your carb intake, you can burn calories the same way without increasing energy expenditure. adjusting diet in keto and calorie intake / energy wasted its much more easy on keto, this is why keto its famous for weight loss. finally other advantages of keto, cravings are quite rare, and as an experienced athlete who has gone between keto and other high carb diets. the cravings get rarer and rarer the deeper you go into keto, I can live fine without thinking about food while in a deficit thats not extreme. Meanwhile on a high carb diet I literally think like a drug addict, constantly fixed on food, and this is not rare, look most bodybuilders and how much they need to eat in volume just to satisfy their needs.
A common keto misconception and the reason why a lot of people who try the keto diet can't lose weight. They're told that it's all hormonal and that calories don't matter, which gets them into keto only to discover that they're not losing any weight until they significantly reduce their calories.
@@vaska1999 I’ve literally never heard any keto person say that. What I have heard them say is the focusing on eating protein and fat keeps you satiated longer so then you don’t overeat, which I found to be true. Unfortunately fat burning via extra muscle is also overrated. I think you get extra 8 calories per kg of muscle vs fat. So if you weigh the same but replace 5 pounds of fat with muscle, you burn extra 18 calories per day. That's like 52 grams of cooked broccoli.
Walking is awesome. Calorie deficit is needed to lose fat, but it is not as simple as that. These guys are smart, but they don't know how to lose weight. Most of what they say comes from the perspective of an already fit person. They don't understand the dynamics of what it feels like to have all that extra weight (bless their little hearts, they try). Calorie restriction alone is a plan for failure. Keto/carnivore in a Calorie restriction is much more effective and much more sustainable than Calorie restriction alon because you don't feel famished, and you will lose weight faster than Calorie restriction alone. Mix in walking, which is also sustainable for someone starting out heavy. After you start feeling great, add resistance training. That's how to lose fat. Get a gym membership and count calories... quit after 2 weeks because your body isn't made for that (yet) and stay fat.

Does this ring true for drinking alcohol (meaning calorie deficit is still what matters). I've seen videos saying don't drink alcohol b/c it turns off fat burning to clear the body of the alcohol but my thought is that even if it pauses, it still has to pull bodyfat if you are in a deficit, no? If not, what is happening.
I agree with the final comments on building muscle being a ideal. Walking short vs long is something I have really been delving into. Walking is great for burning fat and I’m going to do walking sessions on my higher carb days. I find 15 minutes to be effective enough. I do outdoor walks. One thing I think there should be a discussion on us the preconception that because people walk daily anyway, walking as training probably won’t do anything. Or how about that it is not given enough science behind why an actual structured walk into our routines does make an impact
I wonder if a solid anarobic workout that breaks down muscle and carbs, followed by 10+ minutes of intense cardio for the heart/endurance, followed by 10+ minutes of walking is a good recipe. I did an intense 60-90 min anarobic, 60 minute intense aerobic on elliptical and 30 minute 5 mph walk after I went through a lot of carbs after intermediate fasting.
Yeah, walking is great for mind & body, unless like me you have compressed vertebre. Then walking more than a short distance becomes painful. I do walk but only for ten minutes or so.
I used to believe it was about calories in and calories out but metabolism is the regulator and it is controlled by hormones. Btw my wife and I walked 17 miles today…with no calories.
That was key for me after menopause. I wasn’t losing any fat/weight while exercising and being in a calorie deficit. My doctor tested my insulin and found it borderline insulin resistant. I’ve had to go very low carb - no beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, quinoa, etc. I eat leafy greens, celery, radishes, cucumbers, cruciferous veggies, avocados, raw fermented kraut, olives, eggs, skyr, chicken, fish, venison, turkey, grass fed beef, almonds and walnuts, and protein shakes with almond milk. I sparingly use olive oil or avocado oil. I fast from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Sometimes I’ll throw in another 36 hr fast from Tuesday to Thursday. I walk 4 miles a day, and do calisthenics and resistance workouts with bands, a Bodyblade, and kettlebells 4 days a week. It was hard at first, but I’m feeling the benefits now.

Just a perfect example of a video why I have had great success doing 20 to 25 mile hikes for fat loss even more stronger when you do it in a deep fasted state like 16 hours
I was told by a Pilates Master that when you're obsese you're best bet is to keep your calorie deficit to as low as medicinally possible, only walk 20 minutes a day, lift weights 3 times a week and do reformer pilates 2-3 times a week. She was right and these guys are right... too much cardio when you're obese will make your body inflammed and produced more insulin..... especially in women.
I have a heart condition so I cannot lift or do HIT so walking is fantastic for me. I also casually ride my bike. It seems I haven’t lost weight but I have lost inches. I was fasting and lost nearly 30 pounds but I’m going to take 2 weeks off of it and count calories.
You've highlighted a challenge with weight as the only measure of success. Muscle is more dense than fat so you've been converting. The loss of inches probably means you look and feel better and are more capable. Keep it up because the conversion will stop and the weight will reduce.
Weight loss is really different for men and women. For dudes, at least for me, this is pretty much how it worked for me. Long walks while your body is running on body fat was the most effective. And the only fitness that has ever lasted was putting on muscle by weight lifting.
What would your opinion be of someone running a mile maybe a mile and a half followed by a two to three mile walk.....is that sending that cardio mixed signals to your body? Or because it's a small amount of running, do you still have the benefits of the walking?
I think what they meant was if you walk the same amount of time throughout the day, is it more efficient for weight loss to do it all at once for let's say 90 min or multiple 30 min walks. Ofc someone walking an hour vs 30 min is going to be losing weight faster lol that's not the question here 😅
I am SOOO sick of the keto kraze. Slapping keto on a label doesn't make it healthy. You can be an unhealthy vegan who eats french fries and drinks coke. Stay in a calorie surplus, eat a nutrient rich whole foods diet, and exercise regularly. Stay hydrated and get good sleep to. That's all you need.
Agreed on the calories from healthy foods. That’s where things are changing for me. I eat two meals a day, but lots of calories and from healthy food. This worked much better than counting calories.

I am not sure what he is saying is correct. It's what used to be the accepted thought, but the BBC made an experiment on a pitch, where they measured the fat burning during a walk and they were shocked to see that the fat burning was at 68% from the word go. The body indeed burns sugar, but it is not all sugar and THEN we switch to fat, it's mixture and the fat part is surprisingly high.
Just a thought on the last point, does walking long distances build muscle in your legs and possibly back? Would this not help with fat burning? I've been doing 20k+ walking a day for the last week and my legs feel a lot stronger and leaner.
Walking will help you build some muscle for a while. But your body will adapt to it, which will cause you to plateau pretty hard. So if building muscle is a priority, I would replace walking with resistance training. I used to walk many miles daily and built some nice legs. But when I started lifting, my body exploded with muscle. But I still walk once in a while because it feels good.
@@rparra2268008 Maybe your body exploded because there was less fat to hide the muscle? It's like those who do sit-ups for definition, yet see little change because they still have fat covering their 6 pack abs. Losing fat, reveals the muscle.
This dude thinks buliding 5 ibs of muscle is easy, it depends if you're a beginner lifter or you have some experience. Adding 5 pounds of muscles takes a lot of time and dedication, so it is better to introduce walking + being in a calorie deficit, and lifting weight.
Your missing the Insulin dump that occurs when our bodies eat carbs and sugars. This triggers or bodies into storage mode. People need to be informed as to how our hormones work as well. That knowledge helped me drop 80lbs in one year with just walking
@HCforLife1 sugar in the form it's sold to us is as addictive as heroine. That's really something to think about. Again, the average person doesn't realize what insulin does to their minds and bodies. The uncontrollable hunger, the yawns, the "I feel like crap," all comes from consuming carbs and sugars. U really have to dump that for awhile until you can get your mind and body right. FYI isnt it funny that the cigarette companies bought out the "food manufacturing corporations". Realize they took pure tobacco, which actually has medicinal benefits, loaded it with chemicals, some being addictive, and now u can upcharge for each chemical, and wallah your making huge profits. U don't think they did that with their "food manufacturing" companies do you?
It takes 36-72 hours of fasting to get into ketosis where your body is fueled by fat. You'll burn glucose which will decrease your body wanting to store the excess glucose in your body as fat.

Always selling the muscle theory, but walking is a lot healthier than the exercises to build those muscles and you will never need a trainer or supplements to just keep walking.
What about cardio after a night of drinking? I heard it's useless and that it's better to lift since our livers will prioritize processing the liquor so there will be no fat burning whereas with lifting at least we can develop strength.
Funny how the law of thermodynamics is always quoted but the EFFECT macronutrients have on the body and the STATE of the individual biochemistry (insulin resistant and obese Vs lean with high sensitivity, age, hormonal profile) is seldom taken into account. What the macronutrients DO to you body and HOW your body reacts to them is as important or maybe (within the context of fat loss) MORE important?! You cannot tell me 2500 calories of muffins will have the same effect as 2500 calories of chicken breast, so why are they both considered equal so far as thermodynamic applied to nutrition?
I believe that Dr. Fung, Dr. Blkman, Dr. Westman, Dr. Lustig, Dr. Berry, and many other doctors would all disagree with you. Not all calories are the same. It's not about the calories, it's about what that particular calorie will do to your insulin.
What do I do if I’m so hungry even after eating unless I eat at maintenance. If I eat under I can’t handle it. This is new for me. And I’m just tryna lose 15 vanity pounds. I do walk 50 mins
Um. Your body doesn't actually _want_ to use glycogen. It needs it for emergencies. Not having it could mean death. Dipping into it a bit here and there isn't too bad. But if you're burning calories slowly, your body would rather pull that from fat, as long as it's at a rate that's not too fast to keep up with.

@@Li-oz1uxBecause it's assumed that you're not doing any weight lifting.
I think perhaps the question wasn't phrased well, and the intent probably was "Which is better, one 60 minute walk or three 20 minute walks?"

The law of thermodynamics is only achieved in a closed system
Thanks doctor
The law of thermodynamics has 3 rules...if u dont match all 3 you get a diff outcome...lower calories in does not mean weight loss,if u cut carbs by 500 your metabolism will simply slow down.. rule 1... NO WEIGHTLOSS TILL U LOWER INSULIN LEVELS
I walk at this nice park in my city, I can’t walk on treadmills or tracks I have be to looking at something like nature
Did I read this right? You walk/hike 9 hours every Saturday?
@@Otis-and-Chloe well not 9 hours every Saturday. I was doing regular 7-8 hour walks (approx 36km) along Sydney Harbour from my place, and one day I decided to walk to a friend's place and it ended up being 47.3km. I was previously doing hikes of up to 20km around Sydney's National Parks but a big track repairs program on Sydney Trains on the weekends meant I could no longer get to those hikes so I just started walking around Sydney. People got hungry while on a caloric deficit.
A longer walk is also going to give you a bigger appetite.
Just bear that in mind.... 🐻
Its usually no issue for bodybuilders but for post menopausal prediabetics it is
If you’re in a caloric deficit you are burning fat. End of story
False
Thank You i walk 3:30 hours a day every day. Cardio is great.

The calories you are speaking of are those from the stored fat. Right?
I like the show. Keep em' coming.
What about the calories that you take in that signal your insulin levels to rise ..
Whats worked for me is:
Walk 5 miles and 10,000 steps; both need to be met to account for a short stride
Take a 3,000mcg B12 gummy in the morning daily
Eat once a day consisting of 1 split chicken breast;grilled and plain veg. raw or steamed
Down from a 4x to a 3x and lost 8in on my waist so far this year
Just a perfect example of a video why I have had great success doing 20 to 25 mile hikes for fat loss even more stronger when you do it in a deep fasted state like 16 hours
Do you think mat pilates would work if no access to a reformer?
Lift, walk and be a caloric deficit
Yes! And prioritize protein.

This dude thinks buliding 5 ibs of muscle is easy, it depends if you're a beginner lifter or you have some experience. Adding 5 pounds of muscles takes a lot of time and dedication, so it is better to introduce walking + being in a calorie deficit, and lifting weight.
Your missing the Insulin dump that occurs when our bodies eat carbs and sugars. This triggers or bodies into storage mode. People need to be informed as to how our hormones work as well. That knowledge helped me drop 80lbs in one year with just walking
That's why calories deficit is so important

But if you're burning calories slowly, your body would rather pull that from fat, as long as it's at a rate that's not too fast to keep up with.
