21000 km on my ATASes, and it's an Adventure/Touring bike. I use it on forestry roads/two track in Canadian Rockies, and highways in-between, or for days. The ES suspension eats up gravel/dirt so much better than a standard bike, instantly. The Africa Twin is not a gimmick!
I went the other way, I bought a 2016 when the AT was reinvented and enjoyed it for 6 years (sold it in the fall of 2022) and bought an NC750x DCT and a Tw200. I live just outside Vancouver BC Canada in the mountains, and I love exploring small trails to see where they go, and that often became dangerous on the AT, steep hills and tight trails (single track) was not the AT’s forte (too heavy and hard to turnaround on a tight trail) but I did love riding the fire service roads on the AT, as well as going for long ride on the highway & country roads. I am 5’ 11 but with short legs, and I just didn’t enjoy riding that much in the city, so I bought the NC750x and the smaller dual purpose bike and it is working for me. I still miss the AT’s power. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and your honesty, your first off road ride on the ATAS reminded me of some of the challenges I faced. keep up the good work. Don
Great job! I agree! I have a 2019. I am mostly touring and commuting. Lots of backroads and farm roads, some power lines. Love to go fast, 90 frequently, lane splitting, messing with people in cars a little. Feel like king of the road! Hoping to go cross country this spring. Love the one and done AT. I had the 300L and the NC too. Glad where I am with the AT.
A nice modification which enhances DCT and to help modulate the rear brake is to move the brake control from the right foot to the left hand. That way both hands do all the braking in a balanced way and rear brake feel is much better. Plus both feet no longer have any control duties and it's actually a benefit for balance as well.
great series.. coming form someone who just moved to the AT from the NC as well, and does touring in the SW USA and Baja.. but that ALWAYS includes some dirt... the AT shines in those scenarios.. it will excel no matter what the road throws at ya....
I have a ‘21 AS ES DCT and had it on some difficult rock strewn steep Jeep trails that my crf450rl has had some issues and it just goes! It shouldn’t, it’s heavy, but so nicely balanced. I’m an intermediate/B rider and am 6’2” 220 so I don’t have much problem with maneuvering. I run the Michelin wild peaks and off road I ride it aggressive on 2 rider and luggage and it does still bottom off jumps from water bars so I do my best to always land the rear first. The dct in manual in 2nd gear and it can do and go anywhere. Better tires, manual setting and 2nd gear and hang on!
I own a 22 ATAS it's the greatest bike ever I think. It is just a jack of all trades and master of none. I can sit on it for hundreds and hundreds of miles on the highway or blast down some dirt roads and see some cool places. It is relatively very comfortable to ride I'd give it a 7.5 on the comfortable scale. My Victory cross country tour is a 10 a gs1250 is a 8 and a goldwing is a 9 I'd say.
is yours the DCT or manual ? I have never even ridden a DCT and will have to do so this spring. How long have you owned your bike and what are your thoughts as to the transmission? I want relatively good comfort and weather protection for long days and miles on the highway. I suppose one can also find some aftermarkets parts to obtain even more comfort.
Got my 2019 for 10.5k new old stock in 2021. It had been sitting for 2 years with only 4 miles. It’s my dream bike, I never thought I would be able to get one. Back in 2015 I watched all the AT videos and wanted one so bad, never thought I’d be be lucky enough to own one.
Definitely an adventure and touring bike. I've got a 2022 AT adventure sport dct, I've ridden from Louisiana to Colorado where I did parts of the Alpine Loop. It was a little heavy for those trails but I managed to not drop it at all. I've also had it in sand at the Bonnet Carrie Spillway, she's a little top heavy in the sand but just stayed super alert and it went well. I love my Africa Twin.
I have a maxed out Africa Single, AKA CRF300L Rally with adjustable suspension and power mods, but for open roads and longer trips I am looking at the Africa Twin. It would be a little more bike than what I feel I need. Honestly feel a Honda TransAlp would kill a lot of Africa Twin sales in the US because most guys ride 99% on road as you mentioned and its better suited for that. If they are released here I may be able to find a better deal on an ATAS.
The Africa Twin is a great bike because it can comfortably do most things. It handles gravel road, dirt roads, moderate off-road and highway! Is it a dirt bike, no. Not at 540lbs. Is it a sport bike, no. But it is very diverse in what it is very comfortable in doing. Love mine. It replaced my DR650 and my old Heritage Softail, and honestly it covers both of those more comfortably that either of those did.
I would say it should be called an "adventure touring bike" as you said it can do all. Any ride is an adventure, when you are on the big twin. My next trip will be two up, up to the Lake district in the uk.
I’ve ridden 10000+kms of kms off-road, much more than on road. BC backroads, Idaho Backcountry Discovery route was a piece of cake on the AT. But can eat up the kms to get to the off-road.
You can do it all. Ive ridden cross continent on it. But it will never be as comfortable on road as big GS with full wind protection. Just doesnt have that onroad stability. Though it does have reliability on long hauls. Can eat really crappy fuel and work after that. Maybe ATAS will change my mind.
I want a bike I can take off road when I want.. I often travel long distance scouting for Photos then see a spot I want to explore ..... I wont try anything to technical... Im past that stage in life hahahaha Will hit some Dirt Roads that may have a short 4x4 section to get past then turns smooth again .. MY old KLR was perfect for that type of exploring but not GREAT on the Highway getting there..... So IMO Those are the roads the AT is built for .......... MY biggest decision is do I NEED the adventure sport version or just the Reg AT.... Thanks for the ride.......
The Africa Twin is both an ADV and a Touring motorcycle. Honda, recognizing customers' real world usage, have moved more towards the Touring features with the 2024 Africa Twin Adventure Sport model. The standard model for 2024 is more off-road capable. I see the 2024 as the best Africa Twin Honda has ever launched.
I look at it this way....ATAS es is a tourer, tubeless tyres is a big hint! Yes it's capable offroad, if you have skills! The base model with tubed tyres is much more offroad based! Still more a tourer, but more capable with no skills! The Honda ads show the bigger Bike, but the bike doing all the offroad stuff is the base model! More importantly, are you taking a £20k plus Bike, offroad and risk damage? Most will never, some will go green laning, a few may go proper off road, but the crf 300 would be better! Either way, these bikes will give you miles of smiles!
LOL. That’s how I would have driven my Street Glide on that. Africa Twin is a touring bike for 99.9% of riders except for the guys they have riding on the commercials for marketing. The only difference is on the Africa Twin I won’t cringe while driving through road construction or on a gravel road as I would on my Harley and worrying about chipping my paint. Not to mention, drop that thing and have fun. That didn’t look fun at all, just anxiety of not dropping it. Make a video of that bike on it’s side with all the loaded luggage you have and record lifting it up please. Please post that for entertainment and clicks. Don’t fool yourself and misguide your viewers.
If you want a superior on-road touring version of the Africa Twin it's called the NT1100. 👍😉 Off road capable? Nope. Sadly, if you're in the USA you would be "sol". 🙁

Yeah man, I’m want to do the Smokey 500. Just need a fellow rider ;)
the Africa Twin is a really chill and comfortable bike. it's not as powerful as some of the other Adv bikes and not as fast, but it's good enough.

That way both hands do all the braking in a balanced way and rear brake feel is much better. Plus both feet no longer have any control duties and it's actually a benefit for balance as well.
You spends years honing motorbike skills after years of riding a BMX! Only to go back to both brakes on the handle bars!! 😅😄😃🤣👍
That's a big nope from me.

Muh dream bike!!! Gotta dream a while longer being I'm new to biking all together though. Good stuff!
Never under estimate the power of dreams mate!! You will get it oneday!
Make dreams happen

Nice, this looks like an excellent place to ride. Sand can be a chore for a big bike. I imagine especially with the DCT
I have two Africa Twins (CRF 1000 and CRF 1100). I go off-road all the time.
Definitely an adventure and touring bike. I've got a 2022 AT adventure sport dct, I've ridden from Louisiana to Colorado where I did parts of the Alpine Loop. I miss my AT so much. Looking at getting a 24

Your video was spot on. The A T can do it all.
What is the producer of this mount over LCD ?
is it worth buying ?

Awesome bike mate!! A whole package bike!
You when you say you are turning the traction control down, are you actually turning it up?
How much weight do the OEM panniers add to the bike?
Back in the early days I wanted a TDM or Transalp, or Africa.....I finally got a AT 2022 - and I love it. I hope to have it till I croak.
The little bit of light dirt road you do could be done by any bagger.
I would say it should be called an "adventure touring bike" as you said it can do all. Any ride is an adventure, when you are on the big twin. My next trip will be two up, up to the Lake district in the uk.
What setting was your DCT in for that off reading segment? Sports 1,2,3,Auto or Manual?
Definitely ADV. Dont need to watch the video, own one. But I have the 2019 standard manual. The ATAS is slightly more touring orientated.
I’ve ridden 10000+kms of kms off-road, much more than on road. BC backroads, Idaho Backcountry Discovery route was a piece of cake on the AT. But can eat up the kms to get to the off-road.
Do you think that bike is too big for those BDR routes in the states?
Which windshield is that? I really like I have a 22 Africa twin
I think it depends on your helmet. If you’re wearing a SHOEI Neotec it’s a tour bike. If you’re wearing an XD4 lid it’s more of a 50/50 bike.
You can do it all. Ive ridden cross continent on it. But it will never be as comfortable on road as big GS with full wind protection. Just doesnt have that onroad stability. Though it does have reliability on long hauls. Can eat really crappy fuel and work after that.

Great video

from what I have read and seen videos of, get the AS.
i own 2021 AT DCT.....ride off road all the time...use manual mode ...turn off torque and wheelie control.....bike is great on dirt

The twin handled that sand like a champ
The twin handles it better than me 😂
An adventure touring G.O.A.T.
How many people ACTUALLY take their jeep wrangler off road? Big difference between what something can do, should do, and actually does.
LOL. That’s how I would have driven my Street Glide on that. Africa Twin is a touring bike for 99.9% of riders except for the guys they have riding on the commercials for marketing. was the ride stinkin cozy 😂😂😂
Lol, all besides that sand lol
I always referred to my NC750 as a "half-assed ADV". I finally had enough and ordered an AT.
Lol, the NC is such a great bike though. But no adv bike for sure, and no comparison to the twin
Adventure touring you can ride to the trails
"Anakee wild" tires. I wont run my AT without them
I still want to try them out. They are always so darn expensive
Have you seen "taming the beast" Africa twin video. The Africa twin is a nuclear weapon It can destroy
If you want a superior on-road touring version of the Africa Twin it's called the NT1100. 👍😉 Off road capable? Nope. Sadly, if you're in the USA you would be "sol". 🙁
But why is it still clean?😂
😂😂😂 it's dual motorcycle
I could use dual people to help me pick it up, lol
It’s an ADV bike not a touring bike 😂😂😂
