- Too big...too heavy...too slow?
DAMO bought an Africa Twin Adventure Sports. Part camera mule, part project bike, and part dream purchase that goes back a long way. But did he make the right call?

"i just want one of those"
Perfectly said mate, lot of emotion involved in choosing bikes
No better reason!!
Just an amazing video... I'm a rider and found this channel researching ADV bikes. This was so beautifully filmed, edited, and written... I actually found myself getting emotional at the end of it when you described what I bike can do for you and where it can take you. I don't have friends that ride and my wife doesn't get it, so it's wonderful to hear and see someone so eloquently deliver the message... Keep up the good work, your channel should grow profoundly. Cheers from San Diego, CA.
I was choosing between T7 and AT and my heart went with AT. No regrets, awesome bike!
You’ve captured so much of what I’ve felt astride my AT but failed to put into words, let alone pictures.
Thank you for taking ADV films to another level.
So happy you enjoyed it! Great to see some AT love. It tends to get a bit forgoten I think.
You motivated me to also buy an Africa Twin. An older 2017 DCT model, though. Absolutely smitten and love it. Does everything my DR650 could do. Mine is named Toto. Good name for an Africa Twin with a rider from Africa (Southern Africa). Love your videos.
Beautiful cinematography. Makes me want to emigrate.
never stop, I'm 70 and just got back to the UK from the Sahara in Morocco.. Fantastic
Absolutely love the fact that you bought it because it made you feel a certain way! I lost a deposit on a bike I ordered because when I was my bike in the show room I couldn’t walk away
Not spegheti bolognize...
SPAGHETTI ALLA BOLOGNE(e)SE(e)...and i don't know what is it.
I suppose it's spaghetti with bolognese sauce (ragù).
Anyway
Love this one but i'm too small for this adventure bike and I sold a ktm 1290s for a 790s...less electronics, less weight, low center of gravity, more control.
But Africa has been in my heart since 2016
I got the same helmet aria xd4, but I don't have Africa twin ❤
Damo, you have excelled once again, setting a standard for humour, humility and a thoughtful review. The cinematography and production are excellent, whilst your narrative is outstanding. Really looking forward to more videos of your journey with Murray.
Thanks mate!
Great video. Enjoyed every bit of it. Just checked Adventure 890 and Africa Twin. As you said - I kind of felt that 890 is something I need… but just by checking out - Africa feel much more like something I want.
Enjoy the rides!
dude I don't know your name but you just describe why I want an African Twin. I thought I was crazy but obviously not there are a lot me out there and I live in Harley Davison country about 20 miles from the factory, but I love Honda African twin
Go with what makes you happiest. That's always the best bike to own
Great video! And as you mentioned, it is not about the best motorbike according to any review. It is about the motorbike you want to own and ride. This is a very personal and emotional topic. I ended up with a 2019 AT with DCT and I absolutely love it. Keep riding!
Michael
Spot on mate. It is personal and there are no wrong choices if you're happy with what you have.
Winner winner chicken dinner. That was epic mate - well done. Test rode a 21 standard/manual the other day - loved it. There will be a 23 AT AS manual gearbox in my near future, just got to sell 2 other bikes to make it happen. Love the “loin” skit haha. Cheers from NZ.
Excellent content and well put together. I think we take ourselves way too seriously sometimes when it come to bike choice, so love your outlook.
I’ve recently transitions to a 2020 ATAS DCT Yes it’s too heavy for my 69yr old body but I don’t care. I love it.
I love at Cooranbong so familiar with your ride
It's dream for every man Honda Africa twin automatic gear I'm crazy about getting one of those Bick. Only. Honda company can make beautiful and happy dreams for people
Thanks for sharing your adventure! Great filming and editing.
My ATAS is parked for the winter here in Norway now - good to see fresh videos from the southern hemisphere during this season, while longing for spring to come.
I'll keep riding while yours is in hybernation!
i REALLY enjoyed watching your videos on your RUclips Channel, Even I do love Japanese bikes since childhood, I don't know why but I really loved Japanese Bikes. God Blesses you always and enjoy your safe ride...
I've heavily ripped on mine on and off-road or 8000 miles now, and have zero regrets other than being 5'8 doing donuts in the mud. As someone my height, it gets tough after a few hours. My biggest negative is show almost immediately around the 3 minute mark. The mud blows right up the back and all over the side of both me and the bike. As someone with a Peral white, I'd love a bit of extra flare out there to protect me and the bike a bit more, but also hasn't stopped me from having an absolute blast of road.
@ 16:50 that's why I always bring two ratchets straps that are about 10 feet a piece. Use them like a winch for either my bike or for clearly paths.
Awesome video. Thanks for posting. Ive had a 2016 Africa Twin since the month it was released and I’m getting ready to upgrade to a 2023 your video answered a lot of questions for me not to mention right out entertaining. Love the blooper reel at the end.
😂
Thanks for stopping by mate. Your content looks great too - just subscribed :)
Always so jealous of the sheer amount of trails and off road you guys have access to. Here in the UK there’s very little, and what there is is constantly being removed from use.
Hi Damo! Awesome Video about a short but intense Adventure Ride! 🙏 A coming together with your Africa Twin AS.
It's like you say. We'll never stop riding. 👊 Ride safe!
Q: How do you manage your Navigation?
Thanx mate! 🍀
Cheers mate - I use either a Garmin Zumo XT2 or the Gaia app on my phone.
Amazing video capturing what the AT is truly made for. I own one for 4 years already and 24k kms and couldn't be happier. Do you use risers, what size? and whats your height? I am 1.89m and use a 3cm up and 2cm back sw-motech risers, make a whole lot of difference for my back when touring seating and also when I am standing up in off road. PS: I rode the bike for 1.5 years before installing them
No mate - not running risers. Wouldn't mind giving them a go though.
You seem like the kind of guy I’m looking forward to meet off the road. 🤙🏻 amazing video, awesome bike, keep it up!
Cheers legend! 👍🏻
I love the roads around RWD, and the Waterfall way!! I’ve never ridden them but drove them may times. Great to see you ripping them up!
I cannot believe new the Honda Transalp runs the horrible and cheap looking headlight off the CB500X, and I own the CB500X! The dual headlight set up and running lights on the AT, and especially on the black model, is one of the best looking and toughest fronts in motorcycles,
awesome video Damo, love it! Thanks!
The Transalp isn't exactly what a lot of us were hopinbg. But in just under a month I'm going to test one like nobody else has dared so we'll see what it's got.
@@advlife oooooooo noice! Looking forward to it!
Damo, best video yet on the Africa Twin! My sentiments exactly on the ATAS too, she's something I've wanted, so I got one. For me, she's the perfect bike for the "not so perfect" rider! I'm pretty green to all this but she inspires confidence and gives me that freedom I've desired since leaving the aviation industry.
Those locations your riding in, very close to my backyard, it's just heaven out that way! Some of those gravel roads are very familiar!
Great cooking tips, had me in stitches!!
Cheers mate! You're definitely using yours the way it should be - might catch you in our backyard sometime in 2023.
@@advlife Most certainly will! Have a great Chrissy and will see you out there!
Damo, love your story telling and videography! Beautifully done and narrated! Subscribed for more! Loved the bloopers!! 😂
I love my black 2019 AT. Reliable and smiles for miles. Comfortable, and can load it up a fkoff to the middle of nowhere.
Right on ehhh! I have the same bike 2020 tri-color version. 21000 km and still smiling. Honda reliable, and with es suspension, able to transition on the fly. Canadian Rockies is my home turf, with plenty of adventure throughout BC. There are more capable single track warriors out there, but for multi-week camping throughout mountains, highways, cities, and ocean road ways, I'll take the AT every day. Like you, I grew up a Honda Patriot, and living my dream. Cheers bud, from Canucksville 🇨🇦 :-)
Kudos for the creative - time stopped and i was there on the ride... Hey - question; what pressures in the Karoo 4? Is it better than the Anakee wild iyo?
Thank you for stopping by! I ran 28psi in the front and 32 in the rear.
The Karoo offered a little more grip in general than the Anakee but the Anakee lasts a bit longer. I really like both though.
i am just 5 7 height and i am honda guy had vfrs and firebladed , i want to move on adv to explore that side of biking , but height of these bikes always bothers me , so i decided unwilling on a ducati scrambler urban motorad , can you please suggest me i want to avoid a ducati and i thing gs 1250 is way more difficult thats out of question ... i just need a honda ...but i dont want 500x ... can you suggest
It might be worth looking at the new Honda CL500 👍🏻
And now I want a Africa twin as well 🤦♂️ Great video mate. So much detail. Can’t wait to follow along and see more.
Can only imagine the time spent 👌🏽10/10
My V Strom makes me feel exactly the same way. Including saying g'day to it when venturing into the garage.
Haha .awesome one damo 🤣😂👍🍻keep up the bloopers. Made my day ! have a good Christmas and new year m8, see you in the next episode!!
Thanks! I could do a 20 minute vid just on bloopers ha ha Have a top Christmas!
So Australia has Kamikaze Kangaroos? In America we have White Tail Tali-Bambi suicide deer! Sometimes they work in squads.
Suicide deer! 😂 It’s rough out there. Roos and Emus are the dumbest kamikaze animals we face - thankfully not many deer squading up in most areas.
Nice video man! :) The oooooooonly thing is miss is a little color grading on the drone footage.
But do you like the new model twin better then the old one? I have the 2019 model, non DCT. But always looking to new fun lol
Are blind spot indicators and adaptive cruise control worth $10,000 or $15,000 dollars more? The Tiger 1200 offers blind spot and normal cruise control for $10,000 USD more, and the Ducatic Mulistrada V4 has blind spot and adaptive cruise control for $15,000 USD more. In the case of the Ducati, the V4 is amazing but the fuel economy suffers and the engine is peaky and has high frequency vibration. At price points north of $25,000 I'd be leary of banging a motorcycle around in dirt and rocks. An AT - AS at $12k USD used I'd not be afraid to batter it and enjoy electronic suspension, cruise control, ApplePlay, and a very good range along the way. Getting parts to replace bits and bobs on the Ducati would be a pain in the butt. More Honda dealers around too.
The "Todd Carney cocktail", brilliant, along with the rest of the video. Murray suits you and the fact that you know how to ride it is a bonus.
Never accept a random drink from Todd 😂😂
Honda Africa twin automatic ❤️💯💯
Maybe one day ill be able to afford 3-4yo bike.
Rn now i can afford 8yo bike which is still very good, its still shitload of money
My last bike was 11 years old. It was crap but I loved it. The ride is all that matters - not the machine. Ride on! 🤘🏻
The algorithm needs a good flogging. Been watching youtube for many years and only just found this now.
Who doesn't love a bullshit fast bike eh?
Spot on, the almighty brain battle between an 890R, Tuareg and T7 for offroad agility, yet here we are, a 16 DCT, 17DCT and now the 1100 as the RouteBike. It's not a BMW on the road, nor a Kato in the bush, it just sits square in the middle.
Great way to put it mate. You'd know them pretty well by now!
@@advlife nudging 140,000kms of AT Life :)
Great video....very well filmed and edited. I'm looking to buy an adventure bike.... I've been riding a Harley Street Glide for the past 10yrs and it's getting a little heavy for me now ( I'm 73yrs old and had a lung transplant last August ) Been considering a Honda or a Triumph 900
Great bike and a fantastic video so well put together. Your time and effort put into this is appreciated👌
Haha Snoop Dogg Grape Juice
Honestly I can relate to you in every aspect,I just can't wait to buy my own African twin 1100 dct 2022 by God Grace and I'll name it
Bloody brilliant! came here for the adventure left thoroughly entertained 😂 Thanks my man enjoy the festive cheer
Cheers mate! Hope you have a great festive season too!
Fantasic Video mate, I've just swapped my Street Glide for a 1250 GS and loving the change. Now time to learn some offroad skills
Brilliant! Great choice of bike too. Have a look at the BMW Skills days - Boothy and Urk run a very good program that will get you punting in the dirt in no time. Hope to see you out there!
@@advlife I'll check it out. Thank you
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant...both the content and the bike! 🏍👍
Thanks mate - got to ride some great spots in this one!
Nice nice nice job your editing is a standard im trying to achieve loved it
Your bike has to speak to you every time you see it! That’s what my 2021 ATAS does ! It says get on and I’ll take you anywhere and bring you home again!
I love my 2016 AT with no bells or whistles and you've nicely captured what it means to have a slightly unhealthy relationship with your bike but I'm equally unapologetic about it. Nice vid 👍
I really liked your riding skills and the entire ride centric video editing! Thanks for the amazing video.
Great video brother! A good overview and reasoning about the bike, a nice road trip, and excellent videography and editing.
I know how you felt. Rode my buddies twin in the woods one day in South Dakota. Holy shit not a great bike for single track. Awesome job lol
This is the best looking bike hands down
Keep it up, Damo! Looking forward to seeing your adventures on Muzz. Hopefully will see ya again some day if they ever let me back over the ditch for a bike launch.
We need to come over your way and ride some of those truly amazing landscapes!
@@advlife ever since the T7 launch I’ve been dreaming of the same in your neck of the woods! Grass is always greener on the other side I guess.
Outstanding video production. Really great work. I had never considered ADV bikes when I was younger, but understand their appeal now.
😁 i was laughing at the last bit..." i can feel it in me loins "
Nice filming work too ...suscribed 👍
awesome video!! do your giant loop panniers come close to your exhauast? id be worried about burning them with no racks holding them out
The panniers come with a heat shield for the pipe so even if they touch it's just the shield making contact with the bag. I've run them on five different bikes and not a single drama.
@@advlife good to know!! thanks for the reply
Thanks for a fantastic video! I have not had curry since I travelled in India 1984!☺
Great film. I’m sure you took a lot of trouble shooting and editing it. Nice work.
Honda makes great bikes, but you couldn’t pay me to ride that boat. The CRF 250/300 are their real adventure bikes. They can actually go places. Ypu can pick them up if they fall. They don’t have a ton of farkle hanging off them. You want comfort, get a Gold Wing.
Hey Dude, really enjoyed your very professional made video.
I own the CRF1000 2017 DCT, compromiseless trimmed for street use because here in Germany we have no legal off road areas to ride in without risking someone calls the police etc....
However, found your "good god" when looking into the noodle bag very funny HAHAHA
have fun mate, the CRF is THE BIKE, also for me!
I never considered to buy another one and then suddenly my wife bought it for me to my 50th birthday...WHAT A SURPRISE!
All the best from Germany, Dude!
Cheers mate! And a big thanks to your wife from all of us too!
The Power Of Dreams From The Top Of The World ❤
Question Is, Do you go for the DCT or Not??? Whats your thoughts??
I like DCT, but I couldn't justify the extra cost and I find having a clutch to be an advantage in some situations.
Does the bike have water pump issues? I think I ve read that somewhere.
I've heard one story of an AT water pump issue, but never seen it myself.
Excellent video. I really hope you keep it up. Your video was simply great to watch.
Great video bud. I recently took My AT AS.ES on a little spurt of single track. I set the sag at 96mm, ran over all suspension on hard, with the front hard and rear on medium. That said, man it handled well, even in the loose stuff. It's no dirt bike but I was quite surprised. The Motoz Adventure helped as well. I couldn't help but notice that your Karoo 4 were a little light on the tread when you were at camp, How many miles did or would you expect out of those tires? I Want to try those next as the Motoz ADV tires get quite upset in the rain grooves on highway riding.
G'day mate! Well spotted on the tyres. By the time I got to camp the Karoos had around 2000kms on them. I've ridden a little since that stop and the rear is toast now with about 2800kms on it but the front is still looking and felling OK. Was thinking of trying Motoz rear next, but I really don't like thier front tyres.
@@advlife That's great info thank you. So it sounds like they wear like the Anake Wild. My buddy has been running the Motoz Dual Venture up front, same bike, and he is a novice ADV rider. He rides it to work a lot and from what he says, it reminds me of how my TKC80 handled. The search for that unicorn tire is a real pain..lol. Like you, I ditched the factory tires in the first 100 miles. I really like the Dunlop Trailmax Mission but just not enough grip for the riding I do. Thanks again for the info and the great video.
If you do lot of offroad i highly recommend mt21. I can literally wheelie in the mud with them on ktm 640.
I heard mitas mc23 also very good
@@Angry-Lynx Well I got rid of the AT and got a 1290 SA-R🤘. This bike is awesome on the trails even for a big bike. Just slow riding of course but handles great.
@@BigDaveTALKS interesting choice.
I love ktms when they work and for aggressive riding. But for true adventure riding they feel like tiger behind bars just waiting to get out and attack full throttle all the time. My KTM 950 was best bike i had but it felt best as around home toy for hard and fast offroad, not for longer trips. Its just too aggressive, it need to constantly accelerate and brake it feels wrong when just cruising at 90kmh.
I currently in the market for 2016-2018 AT
And i think ill go dct. Itll be my first such new modern bike. I love that it has soft suspension, you want that in travel bike.
Amaizing video😮 , where is this location?
Most of it was filmed in the Hunter Valley, NSW. The ride I camped on started in Newcastle, up though the Hunter Valley and further north to Ellenborough which is where I stopped for the night.
Nice vid, own a 2020 CRf1100l, great bikes.
I had karoo3 on my old 2002 varadero and it was fun offroad but bloody scary
First video, that I see someone using apple carplay or android auto to pair the phone for NAV. How is that working for you in the bush. I have an Africa Single at the moment (CRF300 Rally) and I think bike like yours is a good contender for the upgrade.
Apple CarPlay is great when it works seamlessly but frustrating on the odd occasion it doesn’t. Overall, I think it’s an asset though and I do use it quite a lot.
Hey mate, I just found your channel probably because I keep coming back to Africa Twin, but with all of your honesty - I now ride my Aprilia Tuono v4 1100 factory 2022 and never owned an adventure bike, do you think that it would be super silly to get an Africa Twin as a first adventure bike?
Where about are you from, hello from Newcastle NSW 😊👋
Liked & Subscribed
The AT will OK for you for sure - you're definetly used to a lot more power on that V4!
And hello back from Port Stephens, neighbour.
I have a 2022 adventure sport es dct. I have been riding over 50 years. I have owned many, many different bikes. Standards, liter sport bikes, Harley touring bikes and still own a Harley Electra glide ultra classic. The African twin is the best bike I have ever owned. The Harley never gets ridden anymore. Ever.
I love a content provider that doesn't take himself to seriously yet gets some good points across. Spot on 👌. Just bought myself a Tuareg 660 can't wait for my own adventures to begin
The 660 is a great bike mate. Have fun with it!
@@advlife thanks mate i definitely will.. in fact fun is the one word I'd use to describe the bike. Keep up the good content bud you should have 10x the subs you got 😎
Fantastic editing, crazy good commentary "Kamakazi Kanga" I pissed myself laughing, last weekend we had one that jumped as high as our helmets! Next Husq Rally in Tassie I'm sitting at your table Damo for the jokes - love your work (I can see the amount of time it must take to put something of this high quality out there, wow)
Cheers mate! Yep- if I get to Tassie we’ll grab a beer 🍻
thanks by share your experience...It was amazing.
I have the same😄👍Greetings from Poland!
It’s winter here in the states and it’s a perfect time to clean house of the 2018 KTM690R and put a 2019 AT Blk and gold 4k miles in the stable and get it set up over winter to hit the backroads in the spring and summer for some Adventures. Enjoyed your venture thru the backwoods of Aussie . Their’s a channel that actually lives in that area you visited. KOOL RIDE>> Around Bend Oregon out on 2 wheels out! Loin it will make you stay up all night sniff that loin.. LOL
First of all congratulations for the new Africa Twin and how well you made the video.
The reason n°2 you told was exactly what I tough when I bought my ATAS 2018 DCT.
Every ride they put a smile on us.
New subscriber here.
If it makes you smile - it's the right bike.
Nice one! informative and entertaining. Thanks.
The intro is exactly what I’m thinking now 😎I have a modded 990 adv but always wanted the African twin or should I get the T700 🤪🤪🤪🤪
One of each would be ideal! 😂
Great video. You’re so right. I’ve got the 1100L and it’s spot on for me. T7 just didn’t cut the mustard, Triumph Rally Pro 900 didn’t fit me, KTM 890 was unforgiving & horrifically expensive to maintain, BMW, nope. As soon as I rode the AT I knew that was it for me. That is the point isn’t it. What works for you.
Just got one of those ATAS DCT ES to replace my trusted manual 2016. Great video and story. Can you post a map of the route or just some location pinpoints? looks like almost something I can do without breaking a bone or two.
Totally agree with you
Really good video, thanks
😂😂. Excellent! Very funny! I love that bike and you, my friend, have a new subscriber! Keep up the great work. (what are loins...😂😂) (you brought Snoop Dog wine 🤣🤣)
Very professional and yet genuine and moving, thank you for your work filming it, you’ve surely managed to convey what motorriding is all about
i enjoyed watching this very much and had a good laugh . thanks .
Very nice video! It's very pretty there. I don't know much about Australia,do you have a lot of government land? I was just wondering where you ride? I was all over the map when I bought one of these bikes, and ended up with an Africa Twin. I don't regret it one bit!
Thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of your video. Am about to watch others on your channel.
Please tell me who is the female performer in the song that starts at 12:03?
Cheers mate. The band is called Faire and the track is called Fire
4 minutes in and you absolutely nailed it. The outtakes at the end cracked me up.
Hello, what a nice video. And what a nice scenery where you riding. whe do not have such a nice roads over here in Holland. I have a Africa twin off 2017 and for me its a perfect bike. Thank you for sharing.
Is it legal to ride offroad most places in Holland or are there strict rules like in Austria?
Great vid. Paid my deposit and waiting for mine...
So much to like about the bike...the sound...the look..how they tuned that motor for low down grunt to just effortless chug along rather than peak performance
Only thing I really cant believe they dont have yet is backlit switch gear or bluetooth android auto.
No backlight with that many buttons is silly. There is a workaround for Bluetooth I'm going to try soon with a Bluetooth dongle from QuadLock.
How tall are you Damo?
I am in love with AT but I don't know if it will suit me 🤔
I'm 5'11" mate. Can put both feet on the ground no dramas.
@@advlife Great. I will give it a try. 😊👍🏼🙂
Hello. Great speech about the motorcycle, I feel the same way. I wanted to ask about your helmet. I know that it has great ventilation, but isn't it noisy at higher speeds of 160 km/h?
Congratulations from Honda One Heart world's 💝
Great editing, filming and story line. All up excellent.
Thank you so much 😊
@@advlife love the part about getting what you want as opposed to the keyboard warriors that yell about DRs all day long and how anything else is too heavy. Being of larger frame and being able to handle a larger bike is part of the fun.
And for those times that you gets stuck, I keep 2 15m dyneema ropes onboard to use as a hub winch. Never had to use them yet but Im always solo.
What film gear did you shoot this with?
That’s the problem with those big bikes, they are not made for the difficult terrain. Anyhoo great show😊
