Let me guess, it was the old, "I don't want to just say no, so I'll quote it really high", then the customer said "yes", anyway? Classic way to end up doing a project you kinda didn't want to do, but makes it hurt a little less. The worst part is when they say "yes" right away, you realize you could have bid higher!

Seeing the thumbnail for a project like this, it's a pretty straightforward fabrication; roll a bunch of aluminum hoops and rivet them together. But, the fact that you also were able to envision and design that concept to then fabricate it is what separates artists like yourself from mere fabricators like me.

im a sign fabricator and have to drill holes in awkward positions. Watching you drill those holes while the material is flat on the floor. Something that i do when drilling holes in awkward positions is i use a squeeze clamp (yellow Dewalt style) and squeeze the drill and material together to make drilling the holes effortless. i would recommend putting a sacrificial piece of wood or scrap on the clamp head where the drill bit will contact it that way you dont damage the clamp

Structural, is that the mount you are using? Will the welds be sufficient for holding the weight pulling down from the plate? Or is it only rated for holding in place? Just don't want to have you risk that pulling apart and falling on people after a few years or something. Or is the mount assembly going to be up to the structural engineer and you just provide the pole?

What an awesome project! I was hoping the entire time you would have attached the center column to a planetary gear to rotate the center column emulating the twister movement. I think you easily accomplished this with the programmed LEDs good work! Loved all the sound effects.

I'm glad the algorithm fed me this video. I have been looking into making my own electronic drum kit. You used to be able to find the drum shells cheap but since you pay a premium on everything these days your better off making the shells yourself since the acoustic properties don't matter. This just gave me an idea should I come across some cheap aluminum.

Loved the video and the project. You're a lot of fun to watch and I'll be binging your backlog now. Not sure if you'll see this far down the comments, but I had a suggestion for your layout floor if you need to do something like it again. I do so regularly and made myself a collet ended chalk stick so I could do the guided lines from a standing position where I can see any errors better. I used a wooden mop handle and drilled and split the threaded end and cut the "nut" off a worn out broom.

I hear you on the stress of big projects like this, just got done designing a ceiling element for a customer that's just one small part of the whole store, but is still a $40,000 element. I won't be totally relaxed until it's up and hanging in the store for a few weeks (even though I know there's massive safety margin in the design).

Nice work Wesley. Love the Tornado. I like the idea of a smaller one I could put in my yard or on my front porch that would rotate with the wind. A "Mini Wind Chime Tornado" perhaps?
