    I have to give your son a lot of respect for not wanting to damage your equipment, most kids wouldn't care and would just destroy things.

    9:38 I have always turned my blades on with low to medium rpm, that way it doesn't damage the belts or pulleys. I find it less hard on the machine. I turn the rpm down also when i am going to shut the blades off.

    • @caveman123ization
      @caveman123ization 4 года назад

      Yeah, the new Exmarks with electronic throttle automatically throttle down when you turn on the blades. I think most owners manuals say to do it that way as well. To be honest, I still engage the PTO at full throttle most of the time out of habit though.

    • @josealvarez6935
      @josealvarez6935 4 года назад

      yea the sales rep says to engage the pto at half throttle then slowly idle up, also idle to half then shut down pto when finishing, less wear on the magnetic clutch , pulleys and belts. My pro 48 PTO engages at half throttle easily.

    • @RollingLogs21
      @RollingLogs21 3 года назад +2

      That's what I would have thought, but my dealer says Gravely recommends engaging PTO at WOT. I looked it up, and this is what the manual says:
      "IMPORTANT: Engaging the PTO knob with the throttle lever set lower than fast position can cause excessive belt wear. ALWAYS use fast position when engaging the PTO."
      My dealer says that is because if you engage PTO at lower RPM's, there is more of a time delay, resulting in increased slack on the "downstream" side of the clutch pulley, resulting in increased belt wear / slapping idlers around. Interesting to hear that recommendation from the mfg.

    I so appreciate this video. I've wasted so much money on mowers that just can't survive MN. "Is this for your lawn? What kind of grass do you have?" they ask me... "Yea, but you don't understand. My grass is 5' tall with prickly ask, buckthorn, milkweed, dogwood, stinging needle." Thanks to you, I've found my next mower.

    I use to work for a golf range when I was out of school for the summer and across the road behind the range was a pig farm with a electric fence and the owner had a Beagle named Driver. One day he went to check out the pigs and pissed on the fence he shot off like a bullet so we renamed him bullet. He never came within a 100 yards of that fence again.

  • @carters2
    @carters2 5 лет назад +1

    Pro Tip: I read in my Wright manual its best to engage the blades at like 75-80% throttle for maximum PTO clutch life.

    • @ChuckD59
      @ChuckD59 5 лет назад

      I was gonna say something similar, except it was my local dealer (who I trust; how lucky am I?). Bought an Exmark Radius last month and he made a very concerted effort to emphasize to me to never engage or disengage at full throttle. The manual says so as well.
      That said, I drove my now expired (for other reasons) for 10 years and always engaged at full throttle.
      So, who knows?

    It’s about time you got to the 400 series. They are amazing. He Kawasaki is a great motor, but I love the new Yamaha EFI. The 460 is great for fields, but the 452 is the best all around mower. My company takes care of a large number of properties, and the 452 I have cut down on 15+ hours of mowing per week when I upgraded from my older gravely Pro Zero turns. the seat is amazing and is a serious back saver on 16-18 hour days.

    That is insane. I saw another video of a guy running over pine cones and palm fronds with his and the mower just brushed it off. 6:20 my riding mower pops like that when you turn it off when throttled up high. I hope that doesn't blow the exhaust. I had to modify the fuel cut off solenoid because it went open and the engine died when I was mowing. When you are mowing I'd like to see more cab views (GoPro mounted on rollbar) because it's almost the same view you are seeing.

    Remember when we were told by our father... “idle down that mower before you turn it off so it won’t backfire”. 20 years ago Commercial mowers have added what they call an anti backfire solenoid. How it works is simple. Turn your mower off at full throttle. Your backfiring days will be over. You could save some head gaskets as well.

    Snake! I just have to say I like your vids. I've had the flu for the last couple days and got sucked into a youtube binge. However, I keep seeing people mow a lot of fields or overgrown lots with these 4 to 5 inch cut zero turns and honestly, although i know most of the videos are just to show extreme conditions and that you could use this type of mower if need be and still have the space saved on trailers with standers and the ability to have a tight rear bumper and guard with the newer zero's. Not that this video was about those things. I would still use the Deines Magnum instead, NOT the 3 wheel marty J, Never liked that one never will. I've mowed tight residentials and fields both for over 16 years with the same Magnum Deines and the ability to lift the deck with the flick of a switch and mow down huge grass without having to worry about the boulders and other things that are found in fields is amazing! And when it comes to maintenance on the deck I can just flip it right up lean my deck or throw on some new blades or sharpen the old ones without having to roll around on the ground. Plus, the lack of deck visibility with the zero riders today is hard to get use to when you started out with a zero turn that has a completely visible deck. Which is why i think the crews i see now a days, plus a lot of the youtube crews i see, like the standers, the deck visibility is obviously much better and that's just from watching videos, never having tried one myself. Plus i can put my deck right under most trees or swings without having to actually go under the tree. So, I just had to say that because of how complicated it is watching these videos for me sometimes knowing there is a zero turn that makes this stuff so much simpler and can still be used on the commercial side of things. Having said that in a much too long and complicated comment backed by a ton of Nyquil cold and flu, I really do like seeing and hearing your reviews and keep up the grind brother. Also, maybe i haven't seen it yet, but have you tested any spartan mowers? I would enjoy seeing you take one of those through its paces.

    Isn't gravely the benchmark of lawn and garden equipment? I always thought that all the other brands try to make stuff "as good " but cheaper . It sort of enforces the phrase "you get what you pay for".

      Yes and No- they are a lot of Great brands. Gravely is one of the best though.

    You're risking breaking the belts by doing such a thing I should know that because that happened to me already with a 72 inch Gravely not a good idea unless you have tons of money to spend on belts

      If you're the least bit rough on em, I'd suggest looking somewhere else. Been using my uncle's zd28 this year, and had a few problems. I ran over a branch, nothing real big, and it broke the tensioner spring on the belt. Then, ran over a piece of a harness or something mowing a friend's place, couldn't see it since the grass was pretty tall. And now, from the d ring on the end of the harness slapping around it's making noise now starting up and shutting down and a little bit of noise at speed from the blades I guess being a bit off balance or making slight contact somewhere. Just built pretty cheap if you ask me, doesn't take hardly anything to damage the belts/blades. The way they turn, if anything gets in there, it's going to cause interference with the blades, and break something. Not to mention the ridiculous parking brake and safety switches. But I guess you could say pretty much the same for damn near everything now days...

    You can mow it, but you really shouldn't. Unfortunately, I know from experience. We bought a house, with 20 acres. We also have a Gravely 60 inch. Before I bought a tractor, I started to hack away at the back acres with the Gravely. After about 2 years of abuse, it is starting to fail on me. I've had to replace more parts on that mower, than any other piece of equipment.

      Sounds like the years of abuse took its toll

      Stanley "Dirt Monkey" Genadek I was wondering because even if you tear your bearings up you could buy rebuild kits for spindles, belt and blades for hardly nothing
