  • His is one of the more complicated defenses in the NFL. It is as hard a defense to prepare for as you will find. What you see is very rarely what you get, especially when it comes to the secondary coverages. In a recent press conference, Coach Macdonald let slip that he's been in the lab cooking up another unique way for his defense can confuse the shit out of NFL offenses.

This will be the opposite of the peak Legion of Boom years. Where Pete had a very vanilla defense and said, "Try to beat us." And other teams really struggled against LOB. Now, we are going to be confusing others.

Pete's style worked when he had a bunch of young guys that just simply overpowered other teams. Seattle had a bunch of Tecmo Super Bowl 'phantom mode' players running around out there, the speed and strength just overpowered teams. For that, zone was beautiful because Seattle consistently got front 4 pressure and cover 3 just forces a LOT of interception opps. Case in point the 2002 Bucs... Sapp, McFarland, Rice just put all the pressure on and then you had Brooks/Barber who just shut down everything else.
That said, as Seattle aged and swapped out players, they lost the athleticism. In addition, offensive coaches have become a big thing in the last 10 years or so and guys like McVay are out-scheming stuff like the cover 3.... it's going to be amazing to watch McVay vs. MacDonald going to head to head on scheming each other.
The one thing that drove me nuts in Pete's later years was there was no adjustments to the D... just march out soft cover 3 zone 24/7... didn't matter if we were getting gashed for 500 yards... soft zone D. Mac won't be that style.

Very interesting. I expect the Seahawks defense is going to be pretty bad the first half or so of this upcoming season. There are a lot of guys who are going to be in new positions and everyone is going to be getting asked to do a lot. That's not to say they won't get better, but hopefully people don't freak out if the D starts slow out of the gate.

I could see lots of mistakes with flashes of good to start, given it's a new system, but over time I'm sure they'll correct the mistakes and get more consistent. I could also see potentially switching up the personel to figure out who fits where best. Time will tell, but I think they'll be better than the previous couple seasons.

this is just a hunch but don't be shocked if you see Murphy line up as usual at the 1 or 3 tech allow the offense to set to shift towards him then drop back into coverage like a LB. only a few years ago his position was LB. pretty scary to have your WR come across the middle and meet Murphy and 2 of your OL are looking for someone to block but only find air.

Last year McVay & Macdonald had quite the battle. It continued for Sam Howell & Byron Murphy.
It seems like Seahawks & Rams believe it’s between them for the NFC West. Seahawks had so many injuries last year & they still had a winning record.

  • @aa-ze5cz

MacDonald is going to do the same thing he did to Seattle when their D annihilated us last year... guys moving all over the place and confusing the hell out of offenses. Even Byron Murphy... Murphy played all over the line at Texas, even nose tackle (which is insane given that Sweat was on the team who weighs about 60 more pounds lol). All of the safeties for Seattle can play all position and nickel, Witherspoon can play outside/inside, hell he could prob. do safety as well....
About the only non-versatile guys on the starting roster are Woolen, Mafe, and Nwosu. And EDGE/outside corner you can't really have a lot of 'movement' from what I see... those positions are kind of set in doing what they do. Maybe Mafe/Nwosu switch sides but they're not going to be playing ILB... I'm also VERY excited to see what MacDonald will do with Hall. He was basically a 1st round pick and Carroll barely had him out there last year. When it was obvious we weren't going anywhere (even if we made the playoffs we'd be one and done) I was annoyed Pete just wasn't marching him out there...

Mmm, Brandon, if MacDonald's defense is going to be like calculus, then I will need re-watch game films at least twice or more each week...my Calculus classes in college were a disaster for my GPA lol. On a serious note, I was looking at the OverTheCap website today, I forget if it was Brendon or Corbin Smith, or someone else who had mentioned the 2025 Cap looks a little ugly? I peeked at it, and it looks like for 2025 the Hawks are already $17.5 million over the cap for next year? I'm assuming that's without any new 2025 FAs signed as well? I need some help from my favorite calculus TA to explain this. No rush, I am just curious if you have seen this. Great video btw, I think everyone is looking forward to MacDonald's freshman year as head coach. Will tease you more about San Diego another time. Go Hawks!

Floor record is in my eyes 8-9, and Ceiling record in my eyes is 11-6. It’s very rare for a team to go undefeated through the regular season. The last time a team was undefeated to win a super bowl was the 1974 Miami Dolphins.

    • @TheHawksNest12thman

It's a good question. First, the two positions have traditionally required slightly different skillsets, meaning your Will LB doesn't necessarily have what it takes to run middle linebacker stuff. This is why Macdonald is saying he's never done it before. In Balt, he had Queen and Smith as his LB's, and Queen had already shown prior to Smith's arrival he couldn't handle the Mike stuff. The other reason is scheme rigidity. Because Macdonald asks his players to do something different things post snap, there is already a built-in ease to take on more varied assignments post-snap. Finally, both Jerome Baker and Tyrell Dodson have a background playing both positions, so they're already comfortable in those roles. Most teams would be missing that if they wanted to try it as well.

Ironically, I think this might actually be less effective against QB's that struggle with reading defenses (Russ, Fields, etc.) as they are more reactive than proactive. I think against Purdy and Stafford though it will be extremely effective as they do a good job setting protections pre-snap. Really excited to see how this plays out, I just hope we have smart enough players to run it. We seemed to really struggle with basic defenses that are static last few years, not sure if it was coaching or players (both I assume).

I think the first year is going to require patience. He's onboarding a whole new system, and the prior was nothing like the new. It would probably be smart to give it some time, which I'll try to be preaching on the channel. When hiring new coaches there are no guarantees, just what should be the intention to make the best most brightest hire. That's why he cost the millions he did, as there were others like the Commanders ready to reel him in. We'll see with time how it goes, but this was not meant to be a quick fix.
