    Thanks Tim! Gotta appreciate a new way to choke a load. I’m definitely in the camp of rotating the shackle 90 degrees so the strap is on the pin and bell and not derating the shackle. It may be more difficult to get the strap on but some elbow grease will do the trick. Enjoy your videos, cheers from the West Cost!

    Personally I'd go the bow shackle as I can see in the worst case scenario the horse shoe shape snapping at the bend under extreme load pressures or just overtime. When it comes to safety thinking of the worst case scenario helps me in perventing it from ever happening.
    The way I always tied timber post, steel pipes or even the PVC stormwater stuff was first to tie it together and over the top but after watching your video the bowie is my new best friend as it kills two birds with one stone.
    I wish I stumbled on your channel years ago as farming is a hard game to learn on your own and this is a great from of visual learning.

    Save your cash on these load chokers these are made for heavier loads I use them from 2 tonne upwards on cylindrical loads at work.....
    loads this small its safe yes but overkill.
    If your just getting small loads like this in the back of your ute you can use the 2500kg straps and ratchets and choke the straps back on itself this works extremely well I've use this method on 5 tonne steel billets and never had a problem.
    To choke a strap to a load
    take the strap lock it to side of ute
    go under load
    then bring the strap around the top of load back to the strap
    go under the strap
    bring back over the top
    ratchet down
    done and you save over 150 bucks.

    Cool video! But word to the wise, shackles are not designed to bear weight in that orientation (horizontally). Shackles are designed to bear weight in their vertical orientation (top of bow to the pin). Using it in a horizontal orientation drastically reduces the load capacity. With a simple truck load, it's probably not a big deal with a shackles that size... but it's not good practice.
    But anyway, as I said... Cool video!

    I got in trouble off a Bunnings guy the other day when I tied some timber studs to my trailer the way you showed not to do. I thought a clove hitch around the load would help, but it still came a little loose. Now I have an excuse to get a big bow hitch (I only use ropes)! Thanks Tim 😁

    Thanks for this. I drove tractor/trailer in western Canada as a way to pay for school, hauling "bedbugs". Used the truckers knot (do it with twists in the rope to make the loop) to the furniture tears but have never seen this method of tying down an open load. (Hate open loads by the way - this will help me be more tolerant.)

    I've been choking loads of fence posts for a few years now. I just feed the strap around its self, but it does take a bit longer and the friction can make it hard to get good tention. I actually have one tied on my ute and one on my trailer right now.

    Hi Tim, I love your videos and have found them full of practical useful advice. I have been wrapping the webbing strap around itself where you have placed the load choker. It is definitely a great way of stabilising difficult loads. I guess the advantage of the load choker is that it allows the strap to stay flat giving easier feed and a stronger outcome?

  • @tomasmerino1039
    @tomasmerino1039 3 года назад

    Wouldn't it be the same to just go around the load and then ratcheting/hitching? The loop on the rope would choke the load the same way and you don't need anything else. Would love an answer, greetings from Argentina!

    • @FarmLearningTim
      @FarmLearningTim  3 года назад

      Hi Thomas, no. The rope crosses over if wrapped and can bind leading to uneven tension each side, movement and loss of tension. This is for heavier, commercial loads where top performance is required. For small loads from the store, you would not notice the difference.

    • @tomasmerino1039

    I would be afraid to use the load choker. If it broke the strap would become far too loose compared to strapping it down without it. I would use a single rope and put a loop in the rope to tighten the load together and another loop near the tie off point for a trucker hitch.

    • @FarmLearningTim
      @FarmLearningTim  3 года назад

      Never be afraid to choke your load..... Seriously though, they are so solid, the strap would break 100 times over before you bust em.

    technically most of the world drives on the right hand side of the road... less than 1/6 of the world drives on the left hand side of the road.. and the only reason for the left hand side road drivers like Australia is outdated as it was started like that to keep the right hand free to use a sword while holding on to the reins of the horse with the left hand.. and where most people wore their swords with the point facing out of the persons left side drawing with their right, traffic would pass one another on the right side like australia traffic in order to avoid the sharp business end of the holstered swords...

    I meant to add, when the video was released a few weeks ago, I'm a shy wall flower. If you don't have the luxury of a bow shackle. And are working off the tools you have at hand. Most likely one of the shackles from your tow bar. If the rope end's up wrapping around the pin / bolt, Taking up the tension on the rope, can spin the pin / bolt undone. Its a 50/50 chance, I'm aware of it now after being caught out a few times. 2 in 25 years of using that knot. Now days I loop that, so as it might tighten the pin clockwise.
    Doesn't apply with the Bow shackle, as Tim showed it, as long as it stays on each side of the bow, but be careful, if your rope end's up wrapped around the pin. Typically it doesn't fails, if it runs it all the way out of the thread, it will pinch on the clearance hole, but that seriously derate's the strength of the shackle. My advice is to look at the pin, just to ensure its still up to the shoulder.
    Other than that. its a sensational method. Bundling things together. Load choker also do a chain version 8 or 10mm chain,for use with real dogs. Anything greater than 2,500kg L.C. Concrete pipes come to mind

    the camera angle made it impossible for me to discern if your truckies knot is the same truckies knot ive been using for 30 years. i had to get a mate to throw it onto a steel frame in my yard so i could copy it. and when i wasnt at home i was in trouble. through careful analysis of his procedure i devised a far simple way to do it and show others - eg people at bunnings. but ive got an easier knot to show them now. the double 8 knot. i say "that knot you know how to do to put a loop in the rope, i call that the bastard knot because its a bastard to undo. however if you just go around one extra half a turn before you pull it through the loop its a professional riggers knot called a double 8. and its easier to remember. now you're a rigger". ive had this conversation many times. and as people who know me have found out - dont touch my rope. get away from my rope. i'll do that thankyou. i'll coil that up thankyou. i actually got shown an improvement on my truckies knot by a shipwright that cant come undone if the rope slacks off. you put the loop that was pulled through back through from the other side - i bet that doesnt make sense to anyone.
